Hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Thell.) is an important cool‐season winter forage used primarily for increasing weight gain on growing beef cattle in the southern Great Plains. ‘Karl’ hard red winter wheat grown alone or grown with either hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) or pea [(Pisum sativum L. subsp. arvense) var. ‘Austrian winter'] was sampled for forage nutritive value. The interplanted legume forage was also sampled for forage nutritive value. Ruminally degradable nitrogen (RDN):ruminally degradable organic matter (RDOM) ratios were highest for legume forage and exceeded the National Research Council (NRC) recommendation of 26.13 g RDN: 1 kg RDOM for peak ruminai microbial efficiency during March, April, and May sample periods over the 2‐year study. Wheat grown alone met the NRC requirement only during March. Wheat grown with either hairy vetch or pea had higher (P<0.05) RDN:RDOM ratios and crude protein (CP) values when compared to wheat grown alone during May. There were no differences (P>0.05) in dry matter (DM) yield between wheat grown alone or grown with the legumes except when analyzed by individual date, and then only for 1 of 6 sample dates. Undegraded intake protein (UIP) was generally higher (PO.05) for wheat compared to the legumes and higher (PO.05) for wheat grown alone during May compared to wheat grown with the legumes during May. The decline of the RDN:RDOM values to 40% below the NRC recommendation of wheat grown alone during May indicates a possible need for protein supplementation for growing beef cattle grazing wheat during this period. These data also indicate that interplanting legumes with wheat may enhance animal performance by providing forage of higher nutritive value. More information regarding grazing tolerance of these selected cool‐season annual legumes and subsequent animal performance is required. 相似文献

Abstract Manganese (Mn) toxicity may play an important role in the poor survival of seedlings in declining sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) stands in northern Pennsylvania. To determine the effect of Mn on the growth of sugar maple seedlings, 1‐year‐old seedlings inoculated with vesicular‐arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi and growing in sand‐vermiculite‐peat moss medium were irrigated for 7 weeks with nutrient solution (pH 5) containing 0.1 (control), 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 mg L?1 Mn. Total seedling dry weight was negatively correlated with Mn, becoming significantly different than the control at 2 mg L?1 Mn. Stem and root dry weight were reduced by lower Mn levels than leaf dry weight. Manganese had no effect on the root/shoot ratio. The concentration of Mn in roots and leaves increased as the level of Mn in the nutrient solution increased, with the concentration in the leaves 2.2‐ to 3.7‐fold greater than the concentration in the roots. Except for a reduction of P in the roots, Mn had little effect on the concentration of nutrient elements in the roots or leaves. Colonization of the roots by VAM fungi was increased by Mn, with a maximum percentage at 4 mg L?1 Mn. Manganese toxicity symptoms in the leaves, small discrete chlorotic spots, began to appear at 1 mg L?1 Mn. The sensitivity of sugar maple seedlings to Mn found in this study supports the hypothesis that Mn may affect regeneration in declining sugar maple stands. However, evaluation of the effects of Mn on seedlings in native soils under field conditions will be necessary before the role of Mn in sugar maple regeneration can be understood. 相似文献

A decrease in soil water content during droughts may increase aluminum (Al) to concentrations that are toxic to the growth of trees. The effects of water stress (WS) on the response of ectomycorrhizal pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.) seedlings to aluminum was determined by growing seedlings in sand irrigated with nutrient solution (pH 3.8) containing 0, 5, or 10 mg L‐1 Al. Water stress was imposed for 41 days by withholding nutrient solution for five consecutive days each week. At harvest time, seedlings at high WS had 72% of mean gravimetric water contents of seedlings at low WS. Aluminum decreased growth of seedlings at high WS, but had no effect on growth of seedlings at low WS. Aluminum toxicity symptoms in roots (e.g., dark thickened tips) were observed at lower Al levels at high WS than at low WS. Stem dry weight was the only plant part decreased by water stress alone. Across Al levels, Al concentration in roots was higher at low WS than at high WS. Water stress alone reduced root [phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca)] and foliar [P, K, and magnesium (Mg)] concentrations of mineral nutrients. Decreases of nutrients in roots with increasing Al was greater at low than at high WS. Calcium was the only foliar nutrient decreased by Al treatment. 相似文献

Background – Mycobacterial granulomas of the skin and subcutis can be caused by one of a number of pathogens. This review concentrates on noncultivable species that cause diseases characterized by focal granuloma(s), namely leproid granuloma (in dogs) and feline leprosy (in cats). Clinically indistinguishable lesions can be caused by tuberculous organisms (Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium microti) and members of the Mycobacterium avium complex. Rapidly growing mycobacterial species that cause infection of the subcutaneous panniculus associated with draining tracts are not discussed. Disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans is an important emerging differential diagnosis for ulcerated cutaneous nodules in certain localized regions. Clinical lesions – Lesions comprise one or multiple nodules in the skin/subcutis. These are generally firm and well circumscribed, and typically become denuded of hair. They may or may not ulcerate, depending on the virulence of the causal organisms and the immune response of the host. Diagnosis – The most inexpensive, noninvasive means of diagnosis is by submission of methanol‐fixed, Romanowsky‐stained smears to a Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory after detecting negatively stained or acid‐fast bacilli on cytological smears. Scrapings of material from slides usually provide sufficient mycobacterial DNA to enable identification of the causal organism using sequence analysis of amplicons after PCR using specific mycobacterial primers. Therapy – Therapy relies upon a combination of marginal resection of easily accessible lesions and treatment using two or three drugs effective against slowly growing mycobacteria, choosing amongst rifampicin, clarithromycin, clofazimine and pradofloxacin/moxifloxacin. 相似文献

SummaryEffects of root damage during the transplant process on growth and nitrogen (N) uptake were studied with one-year-old bench-grafted Malus domestica Borkh ‘Fuji’ on M.26 rootstock apple nursery plants. Plants were potted after grafting and grown outside for one season. At the end of the season uniform trees were selected and randomly divided into four groups. One group of plants were moved into a 2°C cold room with soil and container intact (IR Treatment). Plants in other groups were removed from pots and stored as bareroot in the same cold room for three months. In the spring, bareroot plants were either: (1) transplanted with about 10% of the root system damaged during transplant (TP Treatment and Control-CK); or (2) root pruned by 25% (by volume) prior to transplant (RP treatment). Five trees from each treatment received 1 g of 15NH415NO3 at 12, 41 and 76 d after repotting. Control (CK) trees received no N. Trees were harvested 10 d after each N application, and plant growth and total N and 15N content of different tissues were determined. Root pruning reduced plant total biomass and root biomass at the first two harvests, but the plants from the RP treatment had highest total plant biomass and root biomass at the third harvest. There was no significant difference in the new stem and leaf growth among IR, RP and CK treatments at harvests but the TP treatment reduced new shoot biomass. Plants with intact roots (IR) had the higher total N content while control plants (CK) had the lowest. Root pruning reduced 15N uptake rate at the first two harvests but promoted it at the third harvest. Our results suggest that plant growth and nutrient uptake was suppressed by root pruning/damage during transplanting only in the early season, and the negative effects on growth and N uptake were offset later in the season by compensative root regeneration. 相似文献

The extent to which soil phosphorus (P) status affected the incidence of soil phosphate-solubilising bacteria (PSB) and their taxonomic abundance and diversity was examined at three long-term fertiliser trials (Whatawhata, Winchmore and Ballantrae) in New Zealand. Bacteria were isolated from rhizosphere (ryegrass and clover) and non-rhizosphere soils differing in P status. The P-solubilising phenotype was determined on agar supplemented with sparingly-soluble mineral phosphates (Ca2OH(PO4)3 and CaHPO4). The frequency of P-solubilisation in the bacterial population was significantly greater (P < 0.001) in soils of low-P status, demonstrating a selection pressure for this trait based on soil P availability. P-solubilising bacteria from high-P level soils and soils which had not received P fertiliser (nil-P soils) were identified based on 16S rRNA-gene sequence analysis. Across the samples, the P-solubilising community was very rich with 39 genera of PSB found, spanning 24 families and 4 phyla. At Ballantrae and Winchmore, the PSB composition differed (P < 0.05) across soil P status, which was associated with an alteration in abundance of Actinobacteria, Pseudomonadaceae and Moraxellaceae. The phylogenetic composition of PSB differed significantly (P < 0.05) between sites, however nearly half the families were common across all sites, constituting a ‘core community’ of P-solubilising bacteria for these New Zealand pasture soils. As the abundance and composition of P-solubilising bacteria are under strong selection pressure affected through farm management strategies, better understanding of their ecology provides the opportunity to increase the availability of soil P for plant-uptake. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine outcome of open toggle rod stabilization in dogs with luxation of the hip joint. Design-Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 62 dogs. PROCEDURES: Information on signalment, surgical procedure, and postoperative care was obtained from the medical records. A questionnaire was sent to all owners to solicit follow-up information. RESULTS: The distribution for time between luxation and surgery was bimodal, with 24 (39%) dogs examined < or = 2 days after injury and 23 (37%) examined > 7 days after injury. Postoperative complications developed in 16 of the 62 (26%) dogs, with complications developing within 1 week after surgery in 10 of the 16. The most common complication was reluxation, which occurred in 7 dogs. Dogs in which surgery time was < 2 hours were significantly less likely to have a reluxation (2/40 [5%]) than were dogs in which surgery time was > or = 2 hours (5/22 [23%]). When asked to rate current limb function (0 = no lameness and 5 = non-weightbearing lame) a minimum of 6 months after surgery, 23 of 27 (85%) owners indicated a score of 0 or 1. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results of the present study suggest that toggle rod stabilization is an effective treatment for hip joint luxation in dogs. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of meloxicam and butorphanol on minimum alveolar concentration of isoflurane (MAC(ISO)) in rabbits. ANIMALS: 10 healthy young adult female rabbits. PROCEDURE: Rabbits were anesthetized with isoflurane on 3 occasions in a blinded, randomized complete block design to determine the MAC(ISO) associated with administration of meloxicam (0, 0.3, or 1.5 mg/kg, PO) and butorphanol (0.4 mg/kg, IV). The MAC(ISO) was determined by use of a paw clamp technique as the end-tidal concentration of isoflurane halfway between the values that allowed or inhibited purposeful movement. Rectal temperature, end-tidal CO2 concentration, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and arterial blood pressure were measured to evaluate cardiopulmonary function. RESULTS: Mean +/- SE MAC(ISO) in saline (0.9% NaCl) solution-treated rabbits was 2.49 +/- 0.07% and was not significantly different from that associated with administration of meloxicam at 0.3 mg/kg (2.56 +/- 0.07%) or 1.5 mg/kg (2.66 +/- 0.07%). Butorphanol significantly reduced the MAC(ISO) to 2.30 +/- 0.07% when administered with saline solution alone, 2.27 +/- 0.07% when administered with 0.3 mg of meloxicam/kg, and 2.33 +/- 0.07% when administered with 1.5 mg of meloxicam/kg. The percentage reduction in MAC(ISO) was significantly greater for rabbits that received butorphanol and meloxicam at either dose, compared with butorphanol and saline solution. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that meloxicam does not have a direct isoflurane-sparing effect and does not interfere with the anesthetic-sparing effect of butorphanol in rabbits. 相似文献
