Honey bees (Apis mellifera L. Hymeoptera: Apidae) use hydrogen peroxide (synthesized by excreted glucose oxidase) as an important component of social immunity. However, both tolerance of hydrogen peroxide and the production of glucose oxidase in honey is costly. Hydrogen peroxide may also be encountered by honey bees at high concentrations in nectar while foraging, however despite its presence both in their foraged and stored foods, it is unclear if and how bees monitor concentrations of, and their behavioral responses to, hydrogen peroxide. The costs of glucose oxidase production and the presence of hydrogen peroxide in both nectar and honey suggest hypotheses that honey bees preferentially forage on hydrogen peroxide supplemented feed syrups at certain concentrations, and avoid feed syrups supplemented with hydrogen peroxide at concentrations above some tolerance threshold. We test these hypotheses and find that, counter to expectation, honey bees avoid glucose solutions supplemented with field-relevant hydrogen peroxide concentrations and either avoid or don’t differentiate supplemented sucrose solutions when given choice assays. This is despite honey bees showing high tolerance for hydrogen peroxide in feed solutions, with no elevated mortality until concentrations of hydrogen peroxide exceed 1% (v/v) in solution, with survival apparent even at concentrations up to 10%. The behavioral interaction of honey bees with hydrogen peroxide during both within-colony synthesis in honey and when foraging on nectar therefore likely relies on interactions with other indicator molecules, and maybe constrained evolutionarily in its plasticity, representing a constitutive immune mechanism.  相似文献

If we are to breed common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) for durable resistance to diseases, we must understand pathogenic variation and find sources of resistance. Our first objective was to determine the patterns of pathogenic variation found among isolates of Phaeoisariopsis griseola (PG), the fungus that causes angular leaf spot (ALS) in common bean. We characterized 433 PG isolates from 11 Latin American and 10 African countries, using differential cultivars, isozymes, and/or random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. We also systematically screened, for ALS resistance, common bean accessions from the world collection held at CIAT, and assessed the progress so far made in breeding for resistance to ALS. Despite their great diversity within and between countries on both continents, the PG isolates were classified into two major groups: Andean, and Middle American. Although each group had internal differences for virulence, and biochemical and molecular characteristics, the ‘Andean’ PG isolates were more virulent on common beans of Andean origin, than on those of Middle American origin, thus, suggesting a host-pathogen co-evolution. The ‘Middle American’ PG isolates, although more virulent on common beans from Middle America, also attacked Andean beans, thus, exhibiting a much broader virulence spectrum. To find sources of resistance, we tested 22,832 common bean accessions against naturally occurring PG isolates in the field at CIAT's Experiment Station, Quilichao, Colombia, between 1985 and 1992. The resulting 123 intermediate (scores of 4 to 6) and resistant (scores of 1 to 3) accessions were then tested in the greenhouse against selected 14 PG isolates of diverse origins. Nineteen accessions were intermediate or resistant to at least 13 of 14 PG isolates. Similarly, of 13,219 bred lines tested in the field between 1978 and 1996, 89 were intermediate or resistant. Of these, 33 bred lines proved intermediate or resistant to at least eight of nine PG isolates to which they were challenged in the greenhouse. We suggest that, to breed for durable resistance to ALS, common bean populations should be developed from crosses between Andean and Middle American gene pools. The populations should then be systematically evaluated and selected against the broadest range of the most virulent PG isolates of diverse evolutionary origins. For two consecutive years nine hybrids and three varieties of tomato, four Lycopersicon peruvianum and four Lycopersicon chilense accessions were screened for Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) resistance. Three inoculation techniques using Bemisia tabaci, the vector of TYLCV, were compared: (1) artificial mass inoculation-simultaneous infection of cultivated and wild material in greenhouses; (2) artificial cage inoculation-individual infection in insect-proof cages; (3) natural field infection. Artificial inoculations led to higher levels of infection, but different patterns of response to each inoculation technique were found depending on the resistance level. Tomato varieties showed an important fruit set reduction after both artificial and natural inoculations. In contrast, field infection was milder in tomato hybrids, in which yield was barely affected. These hybrids showed a wide range of reactions with the two artificial inoculation techniques, but infection was always more severe after mass inoculation. Extreme severity of mass infection made it difficult to differentiate among variable degrees of resistance that were more reliably detected with cage inoculation. The hybrids F3524, F3522, Fiona, and Tyking showed the highest level of resistance. F3524 and F3522 had an acceptable yield in field and cage assays, but their resistance collapsed under massive conditions of infection. Tyking and Fiona exhibited the best response in all conditions, although their yield was moderately reduced in mass assays. Mass inoculation was not adequate for the screening of wild Lycopersicon. Some susceptible plants escaped infection, probably as a consequence of non-preference mechanisms and loss of vector infectivity. Individual inoculation in cages prevented the risk of non-infection, ensuring 100% disease incidence. This technique allowed the selection of highly resistant wild sources. L. chilense LA 1969 and LA 1963 had the highest level of resistance with the three inoculation techniques. L. peruvianum PI-126944 and L. chilense LA 1932, which were only tested in mass and field conditions, also exhibited a promising response. The results proved that the inoculation technique influences the response of tomato and wild Lycopersicon spp to TYLCV. It is concluded that artificial cage inoculation, although more time-consuming, is the most efficient, adequate, and reliable technique to screen both cultivated and wild Lycopersicon species for resistance to TYLCV. This study investigates the plastic responses after shoot removal of Amaranthus cruentus L. and A. hypochondriacus L. This practice is common in the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico, where both species are cultivated and used as a food source during the vegetative stage. Empirical observations indicate that biomass increases in clipped plants. The experimental study carried out on both species of Amaranthus imitated local farm management. Three levels of shoot removal were applied to plants of both species: Control, 10% and 40%. In A. cruentus plants with 10% of the shoot removed produced more stalk biomass, more leaves, greater leaf area, greater length of primary branches and a larger number of secondary branches than the control plants. In A. hypochondriacus, there were no differences among levels of shoot removal in stem biomass; in general, the number of primary and secondary branches in control plants was greater than that in clipped plants. Patterns of biomass allocation revealed important differences between species, as clipped plants allocated more biomass to seeds in A. cruentus, while control plants allocated more to leaves in A. hypochondriacus. Furthermore, changes in response at the primary branch (secondary branches, leaf biomass, and area) level were observed between species. In general, clipped plants of A. cruentus overcompensate for the damage, while this response was not evident in clipped plants of A. hypochondriacus. Instead, this species showed high tolerance to damage. The phenotypically plastic responses expressed for both species can be used as a guide to improve management of these plants by local farmers from the Sierra.  相似文献

Maize cultivars (Zea mays L.) were evaluated for their aluminum (Al) sensitivity using intact plants and excised root tips exposed to 25 μM Al in nutrient solution of low ionic strength and pH 4.3. Aluminum supply increased callose formation and Al concentrations in root tips of intact plants as well as in excised root tips. Using intact plants, differences in Al sensitivity among cultivars could be characterized by Al‐induced callose formation, Al‐induced inhibition of root elongation, as well as Al contents in root tips as parameters. Significant correlations between Al‐induced callose formation and Al contents in root tips (r2 = 0.64**) and inhibition of root elongation (r2 = 0.80***) were found. Excised root tips did not show a significant Al‐induced inhibition of root elongation. While average Al‐induced callose formation was similar for root tips of intact plants and excised root tips, mean Al contents in excised root tips were up to 1.5‐fold higher than in root tips of intact plants after 24 h of Al treatment. Aluminum‐induced callose formation as found in excised root tips did neither correspond to Al‐induced callose formation nor to inhibition of root elongation of intact plants. The addition of 10 mM glucose to the incubation medium led to a significant increase in the elongation of excised root tips and a 2‐3‐fold increase in Al‐induced callose formation. Staining with triphenyl‐tetrazolium‐chloride (TTC) revealed increased viability of these root segments. However, these effects of glucose supply did not improve the characterization of the cultivars for Al resistance. The results presented suggest that Al exclusion mechanisms expressed in root tips of intact plants might be non‐operational in excised root tips. Therefore, the characterization of maize germplasm for Al resistance using excised root tips appears not to be reliable.  相似文献

The influence of cage aquaculture on the attraction and aggregation of wild fish was evaluated with an experimental tilapia farming structure. The structure was installed in the Corvo River, Rosana Reservoir, Paranapanema River basin, for 140 days. Samples were taken before and after farming began. Gillnets on the surface and near the bottom at different distances from the cages (0, 100 and 400 m) were used for fish sampling. The effects of the food supply at two protein levels were also analysed: Phase 1 = 32% PB and Phase 2 = 28% PB. Changes in species richness and abundance were observed, with the number of individuals and the fish biomass increasing significantly just after the farming began. Some species, such as Iheringichthys labrosus, presented increased abundance near the cages, while others, such as Plagioscion squamosissimus, were more abundant far from the cages. Auchenipterus osteomystax was the most abundant species during the experiment, especially when the protein content of the pellets was higher. It was demonstrated that farming tilapia in cages profoundly altered the abundance and composition of the wild ichthyofauna, suggesting the need to propose effective regulations for such activities, including fisheries restrictions in farmed areas or even the prohibition of cage farming.  相似文献

Small‐scale fisheries in the southern Gulf of Mexico that catch Rhizoprionodon terraenovae (Richardson) are heterogeneous and data‐poor. Fishery‐dependent monitoring was conducted from 2010 to 2017, including a target season during an aggregation of this species to estimate data‐poor fishery indicators. During the target season, the average sizes for females and males (95.3 and 89.8 cm total length, respectively) were recorded, a global male sex bias (1:1.7), the highest percentage of mature sharks for all years (>89%), the highest values of CPUE (20.1 sharks/day) and size‐selectivity higher than the size at maturity. The spawning potential ratio was over 0.6 (reference point of 0.71) in the combined (target and non‐target) and target seasons for all years, which suggests that the fishery stock is not healthy. Annual assessment of this fishery can be carried out through monitoring during the target season, where management is more feasible to implement.  相似文献

The compensatory growth, productive performance, proximal composition and somatic indices of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultivated in biofloc were evaluated during a 144‐day period under five cyclic regimes of feed restriction and feeding. Five treatment groups, in which the frequency of feed restriction (R) and feeding (F) varied by periods (days) as follows: R1:F3, R3:F9, R6:F18, R8:F24 and R12:F36; each treatment was evaluated in triplicate. The cycles were repeated throughout the culture period. The control group received feed daily. Fish were cultivated in 18 circular tanks (3 m3) at a density of 50 fish/m3 per tank. At the end of the study, the survival of Nile tilapia was greater than 90% in all the treatments. Complete compensation in growth was achieved in R6:F18 and R12:F36. At the end of the feed restriction period, both crude protein and total lipid content of the tilapia muscle tissue taken from fish of the treatment groups were similar to samples of muscle tissue derived from fish of the control group; however, a reduction of more than 40% in somatic indices compared with the control was observed, but these recovered by the end of the feeding phase. The results indicate that cyclic feeding based on 12 days of feed restriction and 36 days of feeding (R12:F36) induced a complete compensation in weight and restoration of energy reserves, with similar measures of productive performance observed when compared to the control treatment during the culture of Nile tilapia in biofloc, and food reduction did not affect proximal composition.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effects of palm kernel meal (Elaeis guineensis) as corn (Zea mays) substitutes in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) diets based on zootechnical performance, health, characteristics of the muscle, yield and economic efficiency. The first one was carried out in a recirculation aquaculture system for 75 days wherein tambaquis received diets with 0% (T0), 25% (T25), 50% (T50), 75% (T75) and 100% (T100) of corn replacement by palm kernel meal. The second experiment, conducted in ponds for 184 days, tambaquis were fed T0 and T25 diets (selected because showed greater weight gain without health damage). Final weight and weight gain of tambaquis were impaired by the increasing levels of this ingredient on diets, and the feed conversion ratio was worse. The protein efficiency ratio and specific growth rate gradually reduced, while the total number of leucocytes and neutrophils gradually increased. Cholesterol and triglycerides decreased in T75 and T100. Variables analysed in experiment 2 were not affected by treatment, except muscle lipids. Palm kernel meal can replace up to 25% of corn in tambaqui diets since it maintains a balance in economic and zootechnical performance of production.  相似文献
