The huanglongbing (HLB) disease of citrus trees, caused by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus and Ca. Liberibacter americanus, was first reported in Brazil in March, 2004. The presence of the disease has caused serious concerns
among growers. Pruning experiments were conducted to determine if removal of symptomatic branches or the entire canopy (decapitation)
would eliminate infected tissues and save HLB-affected trees. Pruning was done in five blocks on a total of 592 3- to 16 year-old
‘Valência’, ‘Hamlin’ or ‘Pêra’ sweet orange trees showing no symptoms or with two levels of symptom severity. Ten decapitated
trees per block were caged and all trees were treated with insecticides to control the psyllid vector, Diaphorina citri. Mottled leaves reappeared on most symptomatic (69.2%) as well on some asymptomatic (7.6%) pruned trees, regardless of age,
variety, and pruning procedure. Presence of the pathogen (Ca. Liberibacter americanus) in all symptomatic trees was confirmed by PCR. In general, the greater the symptom severity before

We have analyzed the influence of the stage of ripeness on L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) gene expression, accumulation of anthocyanins and total phenolics, and on antioxidant activity in the skin of table grapes treated with 20% CO2 + 20% O2 + 60 % N2 for 3 or 6 d at low temperature (0 °C). The residual effect of high CO2 treatment after transfer to air was also studied. In early harvested grapes, neither the anthocyanin content nor the accumulation of VcPAL mRNA was affected by any of the CO2 treatments applied. However, in late harvested grapes, the duration of high CO2 treatment determined its effect and a 6 d treatment with CO2 sustained higher levels of total phenolics and anthocyanin accumulation, and VcPAL expression than observed in untreated late harvested grapes. The increased antioxidant capacity was correlated with the total amount of phenolics and anthocyanins. Conversely, in grapes treated for 3 d with CO2 the phenylpropanoid pathway did not appear to be induced and a relationship between antioxidant activity and anthocyanins was not observed. Thus, further studies are needed to identify the most important antioxidants in these treated fruit. 相似文献

In implantation trials carried out with Prosopis chilensis and Prosopis flexuosa, the following variables were considered: implantation time (December and March), implantation technique (direct seeding and seedling transplantation) and age of the seedlings at the time of transplantation (60, 105 and 150 days). Survival was evaluated for more than 9 months after implantation and trials were repeated in 3 consecutive years.
Results from both species were similar and they show that survival after transplantation was higher (60–80%) than from direct seeding (35–45%). Survival from transplantation was independent of the size and age of the seedlings and it was less affected by climatic conditions than direct field sowing. Survival from direct seeding was higher in March than in December. The best time for either implantation alternative would be the end of the summer or beginning of fall, when climatic conditions increase the probability of seedling survival. 相似文献

A multidisciplinary team undertook a six-year investigation on the agro-ecological and socio-economic aspects of the dehesa system in the Sierra Norte area, a part of the Sierra Morena of the Sevilla Province, Western Andalusia, Spain. This paper summarizes its findings on the various agro-ecological features of the system and evaluates the system's functional aspects vis-a-vis the trends and developments in land use in the region over the past few centuries. The synergistic effects of tree cover on understorey grassland vegetation is discussed in terms of soil fertility build-up and favourable micro-climatic and hydrological features, and the potential use of this information in future research and development programmes to improve the dehesa system in the Mediterranean region is outlined. 相似文献

In a 14-week study, 1-year-old Aleppo pine seedlings were grownin two growth chambers. Seedlings were artificially hardenedby decreasing photoperiod and temperature. In each chamber halfof the seedlings were fertilized with nitrogen (8.4 mg seedling1).In order to determine the relative importance of the hardeningenvironment versus fertilization, each chamber was programmedto decrease night temperatures down to a low of 8 or 4°C.Chlorophyll fluorescence and frost hardiness was measured fivetimes during the experiment. A sample of seedlings from eachtreatment was exposed to an artificial frost at 5°Cand the freezing effects were assessed by measurements of chlorophyllfluorescence and visual evaluation of needle damage. Seedlingsincreased their frost hardiness during the experiment in allthe treatments but the ratio of variable to maximal chlorophyllfluorescence (Fv/Fm) measured before freezing did not vary duringthe experiment. This indicates that Aleppo pine maintains itsphotosynthetic ability during hardening in contrast to otherconiferous species from colder climates. The effect of nitrogenfertilization on frost hardiness was small in comparison withchamber effect. Nitrogen fertilization slightly delayed theacquisition of hardening in the coldest chamber. Seedlings inthe warmest chamber did not become fully resistant to 5°C,but in the coldest chamber, where night temperature reached4°C, all the seedlings were resistant to the frost. Severedamage caused by frost could be related to a rapid rise of minimalfluorescence (F0) but the best index of damage was the dropof Fv/Fm after freezing. 相似文献

The activity of ten compounds isolated from Brazilian lichen over the release of hydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide was evaluated in the culture of peritoneal macrophage cells from mice. Salazinic, secalonic A and fumarprotocetraric acids were the compounds that induced the greatest release of H2O2, whereas 12R-usnic and diffractaic acids induced the release of NO.
