Calibration of sulfate levels in the archean ocean

The size of the marine sulfate reservoir has grown through Earth's history, reflecting the accumulation of oxygen into the atmosphere. Sulfur isotope fractionation experiments on marine and freshwater sulfate reducers, together with the isotope record, imply that oceanic Archean sulfate concentrations were <200 microM, which is less than one-hundredth of present marine sulfate levels and one-fifth of what was previously thought. Such low sulfate concentrations were maintained by volcanic outgassing of SO2 gas, and severely suppressed sulfate reduction rates allowed for a carbon cycle dominated by methanogenesis.     

Late-Neoproterozoic deep-ocean oxygenation and the rise of animal life

Because animals require oxygen, an increase in late-Neoproterozoic oxygen concentrations has been suggested as a stimulus for their evolution. The iron content of deep-sea sediments shows that the deep ocean was anoxic and ferruginous before and during the Gaskiers glaciation 580 million years ago and that it became oxic afterward. The first known members of the Ediacara biota arose shortly after the Gaskiers glaciation, suggesting a causal link between their evolution and this oxygenation event. A prolonged stable oxic environment may have permitted the emergence of bilateral motile animals some 25 million years later.     

A Light and Electron Microscopic Study of Developing Bovine Sympathetic Ganglia

This study concentrated on the histogenesis of bovine sympathetic ganglia, especially the development of the capsule, the interaction of sympathoblasts and supporting cells, and the ultrastructural detail of developing sympathoblasts. For this purpose 1st thoracic ganglia from 19 embryos and foetuses were collected and separated into 4 groups. The methods of study involved light and electron microscopy. From the study it was concluded that for neuronal development a functional interaction was necessary with satellite and Schwann cells, that the capsule had a role in maintaining neuronal homeostasis, and that sympathetic neurons displayed a number of morphologically distinct forms before reaching maturity.     

Multifocal idiopathic pyogranulomatous bone disease in a dog

Disseminated, multifocal idiopathic pyogranulomatous bone disease in a five-year-old neutered female crossbred cattle dog is described. The dog was presented for neck pain and reluctance to exercise. Radiography demonstrated polyostotic bone disease, the predominant change consisting of a mottled pattern of osteosclerosis interspersed with punctate foci of osteolysis. Numerous bones of the axial and appendicular skeleton were affected including cervical vertebrae, ribs, scapulae and humeri. Biopsy revealed sterile pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis. This was confirmed at necropsy which showed that lesions were restricted to bone. Idiopathic granulomatous or pyogranulomatous conditions have been described in the dog in relation to skin but not bone. In people, idiopathic granulomatous bone disease is one of a group of conditions collectively called histiocytosis X, which are thought to be immunoregulatory disorders related to Tlymphocyte suppressor cell deficiency and Langerhans' cell proliferation.     

The Effect of Storage on Ammonia Concentration in Canine Packed Red Blood Cells.

Objective: To determine the effect of storage on ammonia concentration in canine packed red blood cell (pRBC) units.
Design: In vitro and in vivo study.
Setting: University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Interventions: Ammonia concentration was measured in 7 units of canine pRBC prepared in citrate-phosphate-dextrose (CPD) and Adsol^a on Days 1 and 35 of storage. Ammonia was measured in 4 additional units of canine pRBC on Days 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35. Plasma ammonia was also determined in 5 anemic dogs receiving pRBC.
Measurements and Main Results: Ammonia concentration increased from 73 ± 15 mmol/L (mean ± SD) on Day 1 to 800 ± 275 mmpl/L on Day (p<0.001). When measured every 7 days in 4 units of canine pRBC, ammonia concentration increased from 23 ± 8 mmol/L on Day 0 to 179 ± 13 mmol/L (Day 7), 276 ± 56 mmol/L (Day 14). 383 ± 47 mmol/L (Day21), 466 ± 30 mmol/L (Day 28), and 562 ± 27 mmol/L (Day 35) (p<0.05 for all comparisons). In a preliminary study, plasma ammonia concentration measured in blood samples from 5 anemic dogs without primary liver disease immediately before and after transfusion with 5–10 ml/kg of stored pRBC remained in the normal reference range.
Conclusions: The ammonia concentration in stored canine pRBC increased markedly with time. In this preliminary study, ammonia concentrations in dogs without primary liver disease did not increase above the reference range after transfusion with pRBC.     

Treatment of Degenerative Joint Disease of the Horse: A Review and Commentary

Some of the predisposing factors for the development of degenerative joint disease, such as fatigue, early training, conformation defects, and others, are outlined. Swimming, a controlled weight-bearing exercise, is discussed and strongly recommended for treatment of degenerative joint disease in the horse. A brief review of counterirritants and vesicants, as well as current therapeutic suggestions, are presented. Cryotherapy, which is a relatively new form of counterirritation, is discussed. The benefits and limitations of radiation therapy are briefly discussed, and gamma rays are felt to be superior to x-rays. The most frequently used antiinflammatory drugs are discussed, and the two main categories, corticosteroids and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, are presented in detail. Among the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, hyaluronic acid, DMSO, and superoxide dismutase are presented and their mode of action, as well as benefits and disadvantages, are evaluated. Joint lavage is an effective tool in the management of joint disease, because it removes degenerative debris and inflammatory cells from the joint. The management of degenerative joint disease generally involves more than one of the therapeutic regimens mentioned. On the other hand, there is not a single treatment combination that is superior in all situations. The clinician treating degenerative joint disease must select the treatment regimen that works best for him and for the case to be treated. Such a choice must be based on a thorough understanding of applicable therapeutic agents and modes of physical therapy.     

Development of the Bovine Metanephros

This study presents the gross and light microscopic features of the developing bovine metanephros. Thirty-six specimens, consisting of 19 whole embryos and foetuses, 15 foetal metanephroi, one calf kidney and one cow kidney, were examined. The development of the collecting duct system and nephron induction and formation were similar to those processes described for the human kidney but appeared to follow an accelerated time course. The bovine metanephros by 15–18 weeks gestation, had a well organized internal structure consisting of dilated major calyces, prominent minor calyces and papillae, and a definize cortex and medulla. Nephron induction started as early as 4–6 weeks gestation and was completed around 28 weeks.     

Indices of renal function: reference values in normal horses

Urine and blood samples were taken at the same time from normal adult horses presented for routine investigations to establish reference values for a variety of parameters reported to be useful in the clinical evaluation of renal function. Blood biochemical values were consistent with previous studies and had well-defined normal ranges. Parameters representing urine concentration and electrolyte excretion however, varied widely reflecting the ability of the healthy kidney to change the composition of urine in response to differences in environment and management. Percent creatinine clearance ratios for potassium in particular were lower than those reported in normal horses in previous studies. Rational interpretation of these latter measurements should accept a wide range of normal values and management conditions must be considered in this interpretation.     

The laboratory culture of Dichelobacter nodosus in a footrot eradication program

SUMMARY As part of a program to eradicate virulent footrot from Western Australia, 2745 isolates of Dichelobacter nodosus were isolated from 5263 specimens from 1883 submissions. The virulence of each isolate was assessed using protease thermostability and isoenzyme zymogram. We describe changes to the materials and methods required to handle these specimens and to reduce the interval between submission and report to 8 days.
