The hyphae of the water mold Achyla bisexualis generate electrical currents that enter the growing tips and leave farther back. An inward-moving current also precedes branching and predicts the site of branch emergence; during the branching process, the current at the original tip declines or even reverses transiently without any change in growth rate. The inward current probably acts as an early signal during branch differentiation. The flow of specific ions rather than the flow of electrical charge probably serves to localize growth.  相似文献

We investigated both the current status of N2 fixation in western Washington forests, and the potential effects of acid rain on this vital process. Even the low concentrations of SO2 presently found in the Northwest are thought to have an adverse effect on N2 fixation by limiting the distribution of the epiphytic N2-fixing lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria, which is found mainly in deciduous forests. A close relative, L. oregana, was found to be the major N2 fixer in old-growth coniferous forests. It fixes less N2 following exposure to H2SO4 of pH 4 or less. A more serious threat to N2 fixation than acid rain is the practice of deliberately suppressing red alder to keep it from competing with Douglas fir. Also, L. oregana is a late successional species and does not develop in forests where short cutting cycles are practiced.  相似文献

The first direct images of the Jovian aurora at ultraviolet wavelengths were obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Camera near the time of the Ulysses spacecraft encounter with Jupiter on 8 February 1992. The auroral oval is not uniformly luminous. It exhibits a brightness minimum in the vicinity of longitude 180 degrees . In the few images available, the brightest part of the oval occurs in late afternoon Jovian time. The observed oval is not concentric with calculated ovals in the O(6) model of Connerney. The size of the oval is consistent with auroral particles on field lines with magnetic L parameter >8, indicating significant migration from lo, its torus, or both, if these are their origins.  相似文献

Diatoms are one of the main primary producers in aquatic ecosystems and occupy a vital link in the transfer of photosynthetically-fixed carbon through aquatic food webs. Diatoms produce an array of biologically-active metabolites, many of which have been attributed as a form of chemical defence and may offer potential as candidate marine drugs. Of considerable interest are molecules belonging to the oxylipin family which are broadly disruptive to reproductive and developmental processes. The range of reproductive impacts includes; oocyte maturation; sperm motility; fertilization; embryogenesis and larval competence. Much of the observed bioactivity may be ascribed to disruption of intracellular calcium signalling, induction of cytoskeletal instability and promotion of apoptotic pathways. From an ecological perspective, the primary interest in diatom-oxylipins is in relation to the potential impact on energy flow in planktonic systems whereby the reproductive success of copepods (the main grazers of diatoms) is compromised. Much data exists providing evidence for and against diatom reproductive effects; however detailed knowledge of the physiological and molecular processes involved remains poor. This paper provides a review of the current state of knowledge of the mechanistic impacts of diatom-oxylipins on marine invertebrate reproduction and development.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the feeding ability of calves during the first 4 days after birth.

METHODS: The sucking behaviour of 171 dairy calves, fed from individual bottles during the first 4 days after birth, was evaluated by quantifying the volume of colostrum consumed, the duration of feeding, and speed of drinking. Calves had been separated from their mothers and brought into a rearing shed in the morning, when <24 h of age, and were offered 2 L colostrum from a bottle in the afternoon of the same day, and twice daily thereafter.

RESULTS: Newborn calves became efficient suckers from bottles within 24 h of removal from their dams (collection). On the day after birth, 95% of calves drank the 2 L of colostrum offered during the afternoon feed, and by Day 4 virtually all calves (99%) drank this amount. Calves that had inadequate colostrum from their dam were more likely to drink all 2 L offered after collection, but a small number of calves that had not had colostrum from their dams and drank <500 ml at the afternoon feed following collection were likely not to drink 2 L on the following days. However, calves that did not drink all 2 L on Day 1 were not disadvantaged in comparison to those that did, in that they were equally likely to drink 2 L on Day 4.

CONCLUSIONS: The majority of calves became efficient drinkers within 48 hours of birth, but a small number of slow feeders may need individual feeding at least up to 4 days after birth.  相似文献

The obligate intracellular prokaryote Chlamydia trachomatis is the etiological agent of trachoma and is a primary causative pathogen of sexually transmitted genital tract disease; both diseases affect millions of people each year. The cloning of genes encoding the enzyme or enzymes producing the genus-specific lipopolysaccharide antigen of Chlamydia into Escherichia coli is reported here. The cloned chlamydial lipopolysaccharide antigen appears to be a hybrid lipopolysaccharide molecule composed of both Chlamydia and Escherichia coli components. The chlamydial lipopolysaccharide antigen is expressed on the surfaces of the viable Escherichia coli recombinants. These findings may have a significant impact on defining the role of this highly conserved antigen in the pathogenesis and diagnosis of chlamydial infections.  相似文献

The effect of manganese [Mn(II)] on the pigments of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L., cv Poinsett 76) leaf and cotyledon tissues was investigated. Tissue disks (7 mm) were exposed to increasing Mn(II) concentrations from 100 μM to 2.5 mM. Acetone (carotenoid‐rich fraction) and acidified methanol (flavonoid‐rich fraction) extracts were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. Although none of the Mn(II)‐treated tissues showed visible damage, Mn(II) at concentrations of 250 μM and above significantly reduced (60%) the ß‐carotene levels of light‐incubated leaf tissues. A major Mn(II)‐induced, UV‐absorbing compound was observed in methanol extracts of cotyledonary tissues exposed to Mn(II) in the dark. In leaf tissues, Mn(II) reduced the levels of certain UV‐absorbing compounds under both light conditions. These results demonstrate that excess leaf Mn(II) can rapidly impair isoprenoid metabolism, altering tissue carotenoid composition. Furthermore, Mn(II) may also modify phenylpropanoid metabolism, changing the tissue flavonoid composition. Both situations could sensitize plant tissues to oxidative stresses, particularly enhanced solar UV‐B radiation, and may reduce the nutritional quality of leafy vegetables.  相似文献

Three representative Florida composts were mixed by volume with sphagnum peat and pine bark to formulate 12 container substrates. After physical and chemical characterization, the substrates, along with a control, were used to grow containerized Cordyline terminalis ‘Baby Doll’, Dieffenbachia maculata ‘Camille’, and Dracaena fragans ‘Massangeana’ cane. All substrates were able to produce marketable plants, but only five or seven, depending on plant genus, of the 12 compost-formulated substrates resulted in plants comparable or superior to those of the control substrate. The five also had substrate shrinkage equal to or less than the control. Plants were then moved to an interior evaluation site to determine the suitability of compost-formulated substrates in sustaining foliage plant growth under an interior environment. During a six-month interior evaluation, the plants maintained their aesthetic appearances. Based on plant growth parameters and quality ratings as well as substrate shrinkage both in production and interior evaluation, five of 12 compost-formulated substrates were identified to be equal or superior to the control. This study showed that the three composts, after being appropriately mixed with sphagnum peat and pine bark, can be used as container substrates in every phase of tropical foliage plant production and utilization.  相似文献
