Infestations of larval and nymphal Ixodes spp. were identified in 16 dogs and 16 cats from several small animal clinics in Sydney. Cases occurred in late summer or autumn, peaking in February, and were seasonally recurrent in some individuals. Clinical signs of infestation included a papular dermatitis and irritation or pruritus that ranged from severe to mild or absent. The distribution of tick attachment tended to be cranial and ventral, with the face, legs, axillae and ventrum the most commonly affected sites. The estimated number of ticks in each infestation varied from less than 10 to more than 100. Basic morphological examination of ticks collected from affected animals was performed by attending veterinarians using light microscopy, and larvae and nymphs belonging to the Ixodes genus were identified. Ticks collected from 17 animals and submitted to the Department of Medical Entomology, Westmead Hospital were putatively identified as I. trichosuri (57%) and I. holocyclus (25%) larvae. Histopathological samples of attachment sites collected from three dogs and one cat were characterised by ticks attached in well-demarcated invaginations of the skin ('tick craters') associated with variable epidermal and/or dermal necrosis, focal eosinophilic intraspinous pustules, mild to marked eosinophilic and neutrophilic, superficial to deep, dermal perivascular to interstitial inflammation, and moderate to marked superficial dermal oedema and red cell extravasation. A range of topical acaricidal preparations, including fipronil and synthetic pyrethroids, were used for treatment.  相似文献

Mutations in copper, zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD) have been implicated in the selective death of motor neurons in 2 percent of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. The loss of zinc from either wild-type or ALS-mutant SODs was sufficient to induce apoptosis in cultured motor neurons. Toxicity required that copper be bound to SOD and depended on endogenous production of nitric oxide. When replete with zinc, neither ALS-mutant nor wild-type copper, zinc SODs were toxic, and both protected motor neurons from trophic factor withdrawal. Thus, zinc-deficient SOD may participate in both sporadic and familial ALS by an oxidative mechanism involving nitric oxide.  相似文献

Numerous experimental models in different species have been developed for the study of polycystic ovarian syndrome. In this study, we used a model of induction of polycystic ovaries (PO) in rats by exposure to constant light to study the distribution and variations of glycosylated residues present in the different ovarian structures. Seven biotinylated lectins were used (Con‐A, WGA, DBA, SBA, PNA, RCA and UEA‐I) on tissue sections, and detection was performed using the streptavidin/peroxidase method. In tissue sections was observed an increase in affinity for Con‐A in the granulosa and theca interna of growing follicles and cysts in animals with PO in relation to the control group. Follicular cysts showed higher affinity for WGA and RCA‐I which growing follicles in the same group, and there was a decrease in affinity for PNA in the cysts in relation to the growth of follicles in both groups. Atretic follicles in both groups showed greater labelling with lectins PNA, SBA and RCA‐I in relation to healthy follicles. It could also be noted that the zona pellucida of cystic follicles lost the affinity for the lectin Con‐A. There was no staining on follicles in any category with the lectins DBA and UEA‐I, although it was staining in the corpus luteum (control group) and in the mesothelium and interstitial glands of both groups with DBA. These observations probably reflect changes in the glycosaminoglycans present in the different ovarian compartments or in the glycosylation of cellular components essential for proper follicular dynamics.  相似文献

Only a few studies have described hormonal treatments for induction of synchronicity and gamete collection in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), both important for assortative matings in breeding programmes and essential for polyploidy technologies. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of carp pituitary extract (CPE), Nile tilapia pituitary extract (TPE), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and gonadotropin‐releasing hormone (GnRH) protocols on the induction of spawning and egg production in Nile tilapia. Among the hormonal treatments analysed, only hCG was effective for producing viable gametes for in vitro fertilization. To verify the viability of this hormonal treatment, hCG was tested using different doses (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 IU/kg) in a large number of females (208 animals) from two Nile tilapia lines. The results indicated that hCG doses between 1000 and 5000 IU/kg could be used to induce final oocyte maturation in Nile tilapia with collection of stripped oocytes. This is the first study to report differential reproductive responses to hormonal treatment between tilapia lines: line 1 was more efficient at producing eggs and post‐hatching larvae after hCG induction than line 2. In conclusion, we demonstrated that the hCG protocol may be applied on a large scale to induce final oocyte maturation in Nile tilapia. The development of a protocol for in vitro fertilization in Nile tilapia may aid in breeding programmes and biotechnological assays for the development of genetically modified lines of Nile tilapia.  相似文献

AIM: To evaluate the in vitro efficacy of triflumuron and dicyclanil against field strains of Lucilia sericata and L. cuprina in New Zealand to establish whether anecdotal reports of declining protection periods afforded by dips containing these active ingredients had validity.

METHODS: Strains of field-derived blowflies (Lucilia cuprina and L. sericata) were obtained from adult flies from flytraps or larvae from sheep with flystrike submitted from seven regions of the North and two regions of the South Islands of New Zealand. A total of 27 strains of L. sericata and 19 of L. cuprina were established in culture and first instar larvae obtained were exposed in vitro to dilution series of technical-grade dicyclanil (a pyrimidine carbonitrile) and triflumuron (a benzoyl urea). Concentrations lethal to 50% (LC50) and 95% (LC95) of each strain were calculated and tested by probit analysis, with the ratio of LC50 of each strain divided by LC50 of the most susceptible strain (resistance factor) derived in order to facilitate between-strain comparisons of susceptibility.

RESULTS: There was considerable variation between strains of L. sericata larvae in their susceptibility to triflumuron, with those least susceptible originating from the Waikato region. Strains from both Tararua and Manawatu regions were most susceptible and East Coast strains intermediate. All strains of the species tested showed a narrow band of susceptibility to dicyclanil with no regional trends apparent.

CONCLUSIONS: Representative field-strains of sheep blowflies exhibited a range of susceptibilities to both triflumuron and dicyclanil, suggestive of both genetic heterogeneity among fly populations and the spectrum of dip use in their source areas. This means there should be concerns for the long-term benefits of benzoyl urea insecticides for sheep farmers in New Zealand, but not yet for dicyclanil-based formulations.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Flystrike is a debilitating and occasionally lethal disease in sheep such that efficacious sheep dips have prophylactic value in reducing the prevalence of the condition.  相似文献

The genus Parabrachiella Wilson, 1915 (Lernaeopodidae) is represented by copepods that are highly adapted to a parasitic way of life. In Argentina, only P. insidiosa var. lageniformis Heller, 1865, P. chevreuxii Van Beneden, 1891 and P. spinicephala Ringuelet, 1945 have been cited, but none of these have been reported on mugilids. Recently, other species of this genus were found attached to the nasal cavities of juvenile grey mullets, Mugil liza Valenciennes, from Samborombón bay, Buenos Aires province. In this study, the prevalence and mean intensity of the Parabrachiella sp. on grey mullet is investigated. In addition, the damage the parasite imposes on its hosts is examined through evaluation of histological sections and immunostaining for proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). The morphology of the parasite's bulla is described from light and scanning electron micrographs.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe the effects of a single dose of the gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist acyline on testicular characteristics of the domestic cat. Twelve mature cats were orchidectomised unilaterally (right testis) on Day -7 (n=7) or Day 15 (n=5). On Day 0, 330 μg/kg acyline was administered s.c. to all the animals. Left orchidectomy was carried out on Day 15 (n=2), Day 30 (n=4) and Day 60 (n=6). Sperm were recovered from the epididymis and the testes were evaluated grossly, histologically and immunohistochemically. Significant differences (P<0.05) were found between days for epididymal sperm motility, vigor, abnormal morphology, germinal epithelium height, spermatocytes, spermatids, spermatozoa, lumen and cellular debris. Conversely, no significant differences were found for gross testicular and tubular characteristics, spermatogonia, Sertoli and Leydig cells and intertubular compartments. It was concluded that a single dose of acyline reversibly impaired spermiogenesis, spermatocytogenesis and sperm motility for 2 weeks.  相似文献

Stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) stands have been usually managed as even-aged stands. Main objectives in management combine two main commercial productions, timber and pine nuts with other social aspects: soil protection, recreational use and biodiversity conservation. Multifunctional management, together with the occurrence of successive events affecting regeneration have oriented managers to propose a management schedule based on the establishment and preservation of a low-stocking multi-aged complex structure on favourable locations. Despite the recent effort on modelling growth and yield on even-aged stands of stone pine, no studies focusing on modelling dynamics for uneven-aged stands have yet been developed up to present.In this study, a proposal is presented for adapting and calibrating an existing tree-level model, originally developed for even-aged stands of stone pine (model PINEA2), to multi-aged complex stands. Data from four multi-aged trials and 61 plots from the National Forest Inventory were used to adapt the whole set of functions included in the original model. In our study, four different methods have been proposed to adapt the original equations: (1) direct validation and re-parameterization; (2) size class modelling; (3) refit of functions after removing typical even-aged covariates; and (4) multilevel calibration. Adaptation is based on assuming that a multi-aged stand of stone pine can be seen as the sum of independent, smaller, even-aged groups. The low densities of the stands, the early liberation of the most vigorous trees in all size classes and the major importance of root-level competition for water in Mediterranean forests are the main factors explaining these particular dynamics. Results show the suitability of the proposed method, attaining unbiased estimates with a degree of accuracy similar to that achieved in applying the original model to even-aged stands. The adapted model (PINEA_IRR) constitutes a flexible tool for the management and maintenance of stone pine stands, covering a wide range of within stand structural complexity, including forests in transition.  相似文献

In model terrestrial ecosystems maintained for three plant generations at elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide, increases in photosynthetically fixed carbon were allocated below ground, raising concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in soil. These effects were then transmitted up the decomposer food chain. Soil microbial biomass was unaffected, but the composition of soil fungal species changed, with increases in rates of cellulose decomposition. There were also changes in the abundance and species composition of Collembola, fungal-feeding arthropods. These results have implications for long-term feedback processes in soil ecosystems that are subject to rising global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.  相似文献
