One-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings from four seed sources (Arkansas, Georgia, Texas and Virginia) grown in 1-m-deep sand-filled pits in two water regimes (well-watered and drought) were studied, to gain insight into the process of seedling establishment. Whole-plant transpiration was measured biweekly from July to December. Whole-plant harvests were conducted at 6-week intervals from April to December. Whole-plant transpiration and transpiration per unit leaf and root area were affected by treatment, seedlot and phenology. Seedlings of the Arkansas seedlot maintained significantly higher transpiration rates per unit leaf and root area during drought than seedlings of the Virginia, Georgia or Texas seedlots, but did not accumulate greater biomass. The high transpiration rates of the Arkansas seedlings were attributed to their deep root systems. Allometric relationships indicated that, relative to the whole plant, biomass allocation to needles of drought-treated seedlings was enhanced during the summer (allometric ratio 1.09), whereas allocation to roots was enhanced in the spring and fall (allometric ratios of 1.13 and 1.09, respectively). Relative to the whole plant, biomass allocation to needles of well-watered seedlings was enhanced throughout the experiment (allometric ratio of 1.16 declining to 1.05), whereas the allometric ratio of root to total biomass was 0.89 or less throughout. Allometric relationships also indicated variation in biomass partitioning to roots in three soil layers (0-30, 30-60 and 60-100 cm), which differed among harvests in each soil layer. Root growth in both well-watered and drought-treated seedlings was concentrated in the top soil layer in the spring, shifted to the middle and bottom soil layers in the summer, and then increased in the top soil layer in the fall. Compared with well-watered seedlings, drought-treated seedlings had higher rates of root growth in the bottom soil layer in the fall, a characteristic that would confer tolerance to future periods of limited soil water availability.  相似文献

We evaluated ground-layer plant diversity and community composition in northern hardwood forests among uncut controls and stands managed with even-age or uneven-age silvicultural systems. Even-age treatments included diameter-limit cuttings (20-cm diameter at 30-cm stem height) in 1952 and shelterwood removals in 1964. Uneven-age treatments included three intensities of selection harvest (light, 20.6 m2/ha residual basal area after harvest; medium, 17.2 m2/ha residual basal area; and heavy, 13.8 m2/ha residual basal area) that were applied in 1952, 1962, 1972, and 1982. All treatments were winter logged over snow pack. In 1991, plant diversity and community composition were examined. Species richness for spring ephemerals ranged from 1 to 6 species/150-m2, spring ephemeral diversity (Shannon's Index of Diversity) averaged 0.57 ± 0.04 and evenness averaged 0.45 ± 0.03. Summer flowering species richness ranged from 1 to 18 species/1-m2, with an average diversity of 0.71 ± 0.07 and evenness of 0.42 ± 0.03. We found no significant differences among treatments for any of these variables, although power to detect a difference (at p = 0.05) was low in all cases (0.15–0.55) due to high variance and low replication. Community composition was not significantly different among the treatments, for either spring (p = 0.09) or summer (p = 0.79) flora. Few exotic species were found in any treatment. Lack of exotic invasions and minimal differences in plant diversity or composition among treatments may be due, in part, to the negligible amount of soil disturbance that resulted from winter logging. While other (unmeasured) ecosystem components may differ among these silvicultural treatments, our results suggest that ground-layer plant communities in northern hardwood ecosystems are either resistant to change or have recovered within the 40 years since disturbance in the even-age treatments and within 10 years since disturbance in the uneven-age treatments.  相似文献

Reporting carbon (C) stocks in tree biomass (above- and belowground) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) should be transparent and verifiable. The development of nationally specific data is considered ‘good practice’ to assist in meeting these reporting requirements. From this study, biomass functions were developed for estimating above- and belowground C stock in a 19-year-old stand of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong) Carr.). Our estimates were then tested against current default values used for reporting in Ireland and literature equations. Ten trees were destructively sampled to develop aboveground and tree component biomass equations. The roots were excavated and a root:shoot (R) ratio developed to estimate belowground biomass. Application of the total aboveground biomass function yielded a C stock estimate for the stand of 74 tonnes C ha−1, with an uncertainty of 7%. The R ratio was determined to be 0.23, with an uncertainty of 10%. The C stock estimate of the belowground biomass component was then calculated to be 17 tonnes C ha−1, with an uncertainty of 12%. The equivalent C stock estimate from the biomass expansion factor (BEF) method, applying Ireland’s currently reported default values for BEF (inclusive of belowground biomass), wood density and C concentration and methods for estimating volume, was found to be 60 tonnes C ha−1, with an uncertainty of 26%. We found that volume tables, currently used for determining merchantable timber volume in Irish forestry conditions, underestimated volume since they did not extend to the yield of the forest under investigation. Mean stock values for belowground biomass compared well with that generated using published models.  相似文献

Existing log grading procedures in the United States make only visual assessments of log quality. These procedures do not incorporate estimates of the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of logs. It is questionable whether the visual grading procedures currently used for logs adequately assess the potential quality of structural products manufactured from them, especially those for which MOE is of primary concern. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of stress wave nondestructive evaluation techniques to sort red maple logs for the potential quality of lumber obtained from them. Ninety-five red maple logs were nondestructively evaluated using longitudinal stress wave techniques and sorted into four stress wave grades. The logs were then sawn into cants and lumber. The same procedure was used to obtain stress wave times in the cants and lumber. The lumber specimens were then dried and graded using a transverse vibration technique. The results of this study showed that good relationships existed between stress wave times measured in logs, cants, and the lumber produced from the logs. It was found that log stress wave grades have positive relationships with the lumber grades. Logs with high stress wave grades produced high-grade lumber. These findings indicate that the longitudinal stress wave technique has potential in sorting logs and cants for the production of high MOE products.The Forest Products Laboratory is maintained in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin. Salal (Gaultheria shallon Pursh), which is widely used for floral greenery, is an important non-timber forest product (NTFP) from the coastal forests of the Pacific Northwest of North America. However, there are no known studies on the impacts of commercial salal harvesting on subsequent growth. A study was therefore initiated to quantify the growth of salal 1 year after commercial harvesting, and to compare this with growth of unharvested salal. The amount of biomass removed from shrubs through commercial harvesting (131 g m−2) was the same as the amount of annual growth in adjacent undisturbed plots (135 g m−2). One year later, the amount of regrowth in previously harvested plots (144 g m−2) was greater than the amount of new growth in adjacent undisturbed plots (111 g m−2). As there was little difference in the weight per current stem, the increased biomass after commercial harvesting was attributed to the observed increase in stem number (60 stems m−2) as compared to undisturbed salal (50 stems m−2). Our study does not incorporate either repeated annual harvesting or variable harvesting intensities, both of which have been anecdotally reported to affect levels of re-growth and therefore sustainability.  相似文献

The relationship between leaf area and diameter at breast height(d.b.h.) or sapwood area (AS) has been used to estimate standleaf area or biomass of forest canopies. It has been suggestedthat intra-specific variations in the relationship between standleaf area and d.b.h. or AS can introduce a systematic errorin these estimates for younger and older stands unless additionalparameters relating to canopy structure are included in allometricfunctions. We collected data from a Sitka spruce chronosequenceto parametrize and test different algorithms for the estimationof foliar biomass (FB) and litter inputs over a range of forestages. FB estimates were significantly improved when additionalbiometric information relating to crown structure (canopy opennessand height of live crown) was included in the models. Althoughthe use of the relationship between leaf area and AS for theestimation of leaf area is justified by theoretical considerations(pipe model theory), we show that d.b.h. and other canopy parametersprovided the most robust estimation of leaf area across different-agedstands. Our results also suggest that the accuracy of litterinput estimates depends on needle retention time and annualturnover rate, particularly immediately before and after canopyclosure.  相似文献

Seiridium cardinale, the cause of cypress canker disease, was found on Juniperus foetidissima, J. excelsa, J. oxycedrus and J. phoenicea, in a number of natural juniper woodlands in Greece. The presence of infections was sporadic in most cases, with a limited number of plants affected by the pathogen. At one locality in the Prespes Lakes region of northern Greece, however, the incidence of infection was very high, especially on J. foetidissima and J. excelsa. The identity of S. cardinale was confirmed using morphological characters and comparisons of DNA sequences for the β‐tubulin gene region. The pathogenicity of S. cardinale isolates from Juniperus and Cupressus was verified in cross‐inoculation trials on both potted and field grown plants.  相似文献

Avian influenza outbreaks have occurred during winter months, and effective disinfection of poultry premises at freezing temperatures is needed. The commercial disinfectants Virkon and Accel, supplemented with an antifreeze agent [propylene glycol (PG), methanol (MeOH), or calcium chloride (CaCl2)], were evaluated for their effectiveness in killing avian influenza virus (AIV) at −20°C or 21°C. An AIV suspension was applied to stainless steel disks, air-dried, and covered with a disinfectant or antifreeze agent for 5 to 30 min. Virkon (2%) and Accel (6.25%) with 30% PG, 20% MeOH, or 20% CaCl2 inactivated 6 log10 AIV within 5 min at −20°C and 21°C. At these temperatures PG and MeOH alone did not kill AIV, but the 20% CaCl2 solution alone inactivated 5 log10 AIV within 10 min. The results suggested that CaCl2 is potentially useful to enhance the effectiveness of disinfection of poultry facilities after outbreaks of AIV infection in warm and cold seasons.  相似文献
