The turbidimetric analysis of IgG(T) in the serum of horses is described. Reference values are provided for 'worm-free' ponies (2.6 +/- 0.7 g/litre), stabled Thoroughbreds two years old and over (4.1 +/- 1.3 g/litre), grazing Thoroughbred broodmares (7.1 +/- 2.4 g/litre) and regularly wormed adult and young ponies grazing pasture contaminated with intestinal parasite eggs and larvae.  相似文献

The implications of shooting animals in the area of the occipito-atlantal junction was evaluated in three sheep by recording changes in the EEG activity. In one sheep, a shot which entered the occipito-atlantal junction and fractured the first cervical vertebra failed to produce insensibility. In contrast, a shot in another sheep which struck the occipital condyles of the skull resulted in loss of cortical evoked responses, the presence of high amplitude low frequency activity and ultimately all loss of brain activity. These results provide evidence that shooting through the vertebral column does not necessarily transmit sufficient percussive forces to higher brain regions to produce immediate insensibility. This has important implications for the humane destruction of animals, particularly, as in the case of cetaceans, where the occipito-atlantal junction or a high neck position is a recommended target area.  相似文献

The onset of insensibility during slaughter was studied in five, 31-day-old pigs. The state of sensibility was determined from the study of electroencephalograms (EEC) which were of a bipolar transhemispheric derivation. In 3 pigs slaughtered by bilateral severance of both common carotid arteries and jugular veins, it was judged that insensibility occurred within 25 s and there was no resurgence of cerebrocortical activity following subsequent respiratory gasps. The EEGs became isoelectric within 115 s. These results are compared with previous findings by the authors that adult sheep and lambs slaughtered by similar techniques became insensible within 7 s whereas, in calves, the onset of insensibility was delayed for up to 85 s and there were resurgences of cerebrocortical activity, following a respiratory gasp, for more than 300 s. These differences in the apparent onset of insensibility in the 3 species of animal are discussed in relation to the anatomical features and possible dynamics of the blood supply to the brain during slaughter. It is concluded that for humane reasons, head-to-back electrical stunning of pigs is preferable to a head-only method.  相似文献

Eighteen of 23 red deer (Cervus elaphus) at a deer slaughtering premises were successfully stunned with an apparatus modified from that normally used to stun sheep. The five unsuccessful electrical stuns were associated with poor head restraint and poor head contact by the electrodes. The median stunning current was 0.9 A, and in the majority of cases the duration of stunning was less than 1 second. The signs of the electrically induced epileptiform seizures in the deer were dissimilar to those seen in sheep, cattle and pigs, in that the initial tonic phase was less marked, and of shorter duration. A similar shorter and less obvious tonic phase was noted in four deer shot with a captive bolt pistol. Two animals which were electrically stunned, and bled within 10 seconds, showed no signs of recovery while bleeding. The electroencephalograms of four deer stunned with currents of 1.3 A for a duration of either 0.5 or 1.0 seconds were recorded under more controlled conditions. All four animals developed electroencephalograms typical of an epileptiform seizure. The animals exhibited behavioural reactions similar to the other 18 animals in the trial at the deer slaughtering premises and were rendered unconscious for between 54 and 122 seconds. The electroencephalogram activity amplitude was greater than that recorded immediately before stunning and took between 6 and 9 seconds to build up to maximum value. It is concluded that, providing the heads of deer are adequately restrained, head-only electrical stunning can be incorporated into a humane method of slaughter for deer.  相似文献

Production from the corpus luteum (CL) and/or hepatic steroid inactivation impacts peripheral concentrations of P4, which can alter reproductive performance. Our primary objective was to examine hepatic steroid inactivating enzymes, portal blood flow, and luteal blood perfusion at 10 days post‐insemination in pregnant versus non‐pregnant beef and dairy cows. Twenty early lactation Holstein cows and 20 lactating commercial beef cows were utilized for this study. At day 10 post‐insemination, hepatic portal blood flow and CL blood perfusion were measured via Doppler ultrasonography. Liver biopsies were collected and frozen for later determination of cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A), 2C (CYP2C), 3A (CYP3A), uridine diphosphate‐glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) and aldo‐keto reductase 1C (AKR1C) activities. Pregnancy was determined at day 30 post‐insemination and treatment groups were retrospectively assigned as pregnant or non‐pregnant. Data were analyzed using the mixed procedure of SAS. Steroid metabolizing enzyme activity was not different (> .10) between pregnant versus non‐pregnant beef or dairy cows. Hepatic portal blood flow tended (< .10) to be increased in pregnant versus non‐pregnant dairy cows. Luteal blood perfusion was increased (< .05) in pregnant versus non‐pregnant dairy cows. Pregnant dairy cows appear to have an increased rate of hepatic clearance of P4 in combination with increased synthesis from the CL. This could account for the lack of difference in peripheral P4 concentrations between pregnant and non‐pregnant dairy cows. This study highlights the relevance of further investigation into steroid secretion and inactivation and their impact on the maintenance of pregnancy in cattle.  相似文献

The concentration of copper and zinc in the blood and sera of over 300 Thoroughbreds in training was determined by atomic absorption between February 1979 and July 1981. The mean (+/- sd) concentration of copper in the serum of stabled Thoroughbreds (79 +/- 16 micrograms/dl) was significantly (P less than 0.0001) lower than that of those at grass (101 +/- 26 micrograms/dl), whereas the mean serum zinc concentration of stabled Thoroughbreds (170 +/- 54 micrograms/dl) was higher than that of those at grass (111 +/- 45 micrograms/dl). No such differences were observed in whole blood. There were marked differences in the mean serum copper and zinc concentrations in the blood of Thoroughbreds housed in different stables. Significant changes occurred throughout the year in the mean values from individual stables. However, there were no such changes in the mean values of the total population. The observed differences were probably caused by dietary variations. The results emphasise the need to establish reference values related to diet if copper and zinc levels in blood are to be used for interpretative purposes.  相似文献

Two mail surveys were carried out in Denmark and the Eastern Corn Belt, USA in 2002. Questionnaires were sent to 580 farmers who had used precision agriculture (PA) and 198 responses were received. The surveys focused on the current status of use of PA in both countries, including: PA practices, equipment and software, Internet and e-mail use, information sources for PA, satisfaction level from service providers, data handling, interpretation, storage and ownership, value of data for decision making, changes in management practices, desired information and services, and the next planned step in the practice of PA. The survey results showed more similarities in practicing PA between the two countries than differences. Time requirement and high cost of data handling were cited as the main problems. Survey respondents found soil maps to be more valuable than yield maps in management decisions. About 80% of the respondents would like to store the PA data themselves. The majority of the respondents indicated that they have changed their management practices due to PA, but not substantially. Some 90 of the respondents used the Internet and e-mail for agricultural purposes, but only a small number for PA websites.  相似文献

Interference between two freely expanding Bose-Einstein condensates has been observed. Two condensates separated by approximately 40 micrometers were created by evaporatively cooling sodium atoms in a double-well potential formed by magnetic and optical forces. High-contrast matter-wave interference fringes with a period of approximately 15 micrometers were observed after switching off the potential and letting the condensates expand for 40 milliseconds and overlap. This demonstrates that Bose condensed atoms are "laser-like"; that is, they are coherent and show long-range correlations. These results have direct implications for the atom laser and the Josephson effect for atoms.  相似文献
