Reproductive performance of albino and pigmented channel catfish ( Ictalurus punctarus ) females was compared when spawning was induced with HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) or Ovaprim 3 (domperidone and [d-Ala6, Pro9 NEt]-luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone). In 1985, only HCG was used to induce spawning. Albino females required more injections, had a longer latency period from time of first injection to spawning, and had lower spawning success (30%) than pigmented females (77%). No differences were observed between albino and pigmented females for time-of-day of spawning, number of eggs obtained by manual stripping, and number of eggs/kg body weight. In 1988, HCG, Ovaprim, and saline (control) were used to induce spawning. HCG induced spawning in 80% of albino and 71% of pigmented females. Ovaprim induced 67% of pigmented females to spawn, but only 2 of 5 albino females spawned. One of four pigmented females injected with saline spawned. Albino females yielded 40–50% fewer eggs/kg body weight than pigmented females. Other performance characteristics for albino and pigmented females were similar whether injected with HCG or Ovaprim. High temperatures encountered during the 1985 spawning season my have had a differential effect on albino and pigmented fish and may account for some differences in spawning success.  相似文献

In human beings, intrarenal blood flow impedance, expressed as the resistive index (Rl) and obtained by duplex Doppler ultrasonography, has been used to aid in diagnosis and prognosis of renal failure. Higher than normal values for Rl were obtained in 3 of 4 dogs with acute tubular necrosis (ATN) and in 5 of 10 dogs with glomerulonephrosis (GN). Normalization of Rl was observed in 2 dogs with ATN evaluated serially during treatment. Increased Rl values were obtained in 9 of 10 cats with nonobstructive renal disease and in 2 of 5 cats with obstructive renal disease. Normalization of Rl was observed in 3 cats with renal failure in which treatment was effective (1 with obstruction; 2 with nonobstructive disease). The magnitude of increase in Rl did not correlate with the magnitude of concurrent renal dysfunction. These results suggest that duplex Doppler evaluation of intrarenal Rl is more useful as an ancillary diagnostic technique in azotemic dogs with ATN than in those with GN and in azotemic cats with nonobstructive than in those with obstructive disease.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to measure and compare the serum concentrations of dexamethasone after oral and transdermal administration using pluronic lecithin organogel in six healthy cats. The study was designed as a crossover, in which the cats were randomly assigned to two groups. The cats received a single dose (0.05 mg kg(-1)) of dexamethasone either orally or transdermally on the inner pinna. Blood samples were taken at 0, 5, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 min, and 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24, 48 and 72 h post dexamethasone administration. A mean peak serum concentration of 30.1 ng mL(-1) was detected 15 min after oral administration. Serum concentrations were below detection limits by 24 h. In contrast, there was no significant increase in serum concentrations of dexamethasone after transdermal administration. In cats, transdermal administration of a single dose of dexamethasone did not result in significant serum concentrations compared to oral administration.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the predictive ability of a commercially available lateral-flow immunoassay used for determining passive transfer of immunoglobulins in calves. ANIMALS: 204 male Holstein calves ranging from 4 to 8 days old. PROCEDURE: Serum samples were obtained from each calf. Results of refractometry, zinc sulfate turbidity technique, and the lateral-flow immunoassay were determined. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and predictive ability were calculated on the basis of IgG concentrations determined by turbidimetric immunoassay (TIA). RESULTS: Mean IgG concentration in the study was 10.9 mg/ml as determined by TIA. Rate of failure of passive transfer in this study population was 56%. Associations between the values for the refractometry and zinc sulfate turbidity techniques were established by regression analysis. Accuracy for the lateral-flow immunoassay, refractometry, and zinc sulfate turbidity methods was 95, 80, and 73%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The lateral-flow immunoassay was better at determining the status of passive transfer of immunoglobulins, compared with the refractometry or zinc sulfate turbidity methods. The ability of the lateral-flow immunoassay to provide accurate results should enable clinicians to make immediate management or intervention decisions.  相似文献

Context

Reestablishing foundational plant species through aerial seeding is an essential yet challenging step for restoring the vast semiarid landscapes impacted by plant invasions and wildfire-regime shifts. A key component of the challenge stems from landscape variability and its effects on plant recovery.

Objectives

We assessed landscape correlates, thresholds, and tipping points for sagebrush presence from fine-scale sampling across a large, heterogeneous area burned the previous year, where we were able to quantify soil surface features that are typically occluded yet can strongly affect recovery patterns.

Methods

Hypothesis testing and binary-decision trees were used to evaluate factors affecting initial sagebrush establishment, using 2171 field plots (totaling?~?2,000,000 m2 sampled) over a 113,000-ha region.

Results

Sagebrush established in 50% of plots where it was seeded, a?>?12-fold greater establishment frequency than in unseeded areas. Sagebrush establishment was enhanced in threshold-like ways by elevation (>?1200 m ASL), topographic features that alter heatload and soil water, and by soil-surface features such as “fertile islands” that bore the imprint of pre-fire sagebrush. Sagebrush occupancy had a negative, linear relationship with exotic-annual grass cover and parabolic relationship with perennial bunchgrasses (optimal at 40% cover).

Conclusions

Our approach revealed interactive, ecological relationships such as novel soil-surface effects on first year establishment of sagebrush across the burned landscape, and identified “hot spots” for recovery. The approach could be expanded across sites and years to provide the information needed to explain past seeding successes or failures, and in designing treatments at the landscape scale.

To date, very little is known about the functional characteristics of the four published canine IgG subclasses. It is not clear how each subclass engages the immune system via complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) or antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC), or how long each antibody may last in serum. Such information is critical for understanding canine immunology and for the discovery of canine therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. Through both in vitro and ex vivo experiments to evaluate canine Fc's for effector function, complement binding, FcRn binding, and ADCC, we are now able to categorize canine subclasses by function. The subclasses share functional properties with the four human IgG subclasses and are reported herein with their function-based human analog. Canine Fc fusions, canine chimeras, and caninized antibodies were characterized. Canine subclasses A and D appear effector-function negative while subclasses B and C bind canine Fc gamma receptors and are positive for ADCC. All canine subclasses bind the neonatal Fc receptor except subclass C. By understanding canine IgGs in this way, we can apply what is known of human immunology toward translational and veterinary medicine. Thus, this body of work lays the foundation for evaluating canine IgG subclasses for therapeutic antibody development and builds upon the fundamental scholarship of canine immunology.  相似文献
