Recent results with Tokamak experiments provide insights into the problem of magnetic confinement. They demonstrate how to avoid anomalous transport and thus solve the major problems of Tokamak reactors: size, the production of 14-megaelectron volt neutrons, and maintenance. An alternate confinement system, the field-reversed configuration, confines beams of protons and boron-11. For the proton-boron-11 fusion reaction, the fusion products are all charged particles for which direct conversion is feasible and neutron flux is negligible.  相似文献

Complex Shear Wave Velocity Structure Imaged Beneath Africa and Iceland   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A model of three-dimensional shear wave velocity variations in the mantle reveals a tilted low velocity anomaly extending from the core-mantle boundary (CMB) region beneath the southeastern Atlantic Ocean into the upper mantle beneath eastern Africa. This anomaly suggests that Cenozoic flood basalt volcanism in the Afar region and active rifting beneath the East African Rift is linked to an extensive thermal anomaly at the CMB more than 45 degrees away. In contrast, a low velocity anomaly beneath Iceland is confined to the upper mantle.  相似文献

The gas-phase irradiation of CpRh(CO)(2) (Cp = eta(5)-C(5)H(5)) was examined in order to study the rates of reaction of the 16-electron intermediates presumed to be involved in the C-H oxidative addition of alkanes. "Naked" (unsolvated) CpRh(CO) was detected, and direct measurements of the rates of reaction of this very short-lived complex with alkane C-H bonds were made. Activation of C-H bonds occurs on almost every collision for alkanes of moderate size, and intermediates in which the alkanes are bound to the metal centers, without their C-H bonds being fully broken, are implicated as intermediates in the overall reaction.  相似文献

Insoluble fiber fractions from raw and extruded oat, rice and wheat brans were isolated and phytate removed. In vitro mineral binding studies were performed utilizing copper (Cu2+), calcium (Ca2+) and zinc (Zn2+) ions, which were added individually to enzymatically treated (Prosky et al., 1985), acid washed insoluble fiber residues from oat, rice and wheat brans. The enzymatic digestion step with alpha-amylase, protease and amyloglucosidase served to remove protein and starch from the samples. Mineral binding studies were performed on the insoluble fiber residue. Mineral content was determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Raw brans served as controls. A twin-screw extruder Model DNDG-62/20D, manufactured by Bühlerag (CH-9240, Uzwil, Switzerland) was utilized. The objectives of the study were to determine the total Cu2+, Ca2+ and Zn2+binding capacity of the dephytinized insoluble fiber from each bran; and to determine if extrusion screw speed affected the brans' insoluble fiber mineral binding capacity. Although dephytinized, the brans' insoluble fiber fraction bound Cu2+, Ca2+ and Zn2+ions. Oat bran bound more Cu2+, Ca2+ and Zn2+ than wheat bran, which bound more than rice bran. Extrusion processing did not affect the brans' insoluble fiber binding capacity to bind Cu2+. However, it increased the binding capacity of Ca2+ and Zn2+ of the insoluble fiber fraction from rice and oat brans.  相似文献

Hydrolytic rancidity restricts the utilization of rice bran, reducing its potential value. In the present study, three groups of eight rice cultivars each displaying different levels of oil concentration (high, medium, and low) were cultivated in 1999 and 2000 under field conditions and evaluated for oil content, hydrolytic rancidity, and esterase activity in the bran fraction. Genotype effects were statistically significant for all measured traits (P < 0.05), whereas environment (year) was nonsignificant. Hydrolytic rancidity was strongly correlated with esterase activity (r = 0.89***), but not with oil concentration (r = ‐0.01). A wide variation was found for both hydrolytic rancidity and esterase activity, which ranged from 6.8 to 56.0 mg of C8:0/g of bran (CV = 49.1%) and from 4.3 to 22.8 mg of C8:0/g of bran (CV = 34.3%), respectively. Red bran displayed the lowest values for both hydrolytic rancidity (mean = 10.2 mg of C8:0/g of bran) and esterase activity (mean = 5.4 mg of C8:0/g of bran). Apparently, the low values for hydrolytic rancidity were related to the inhibition effect of bran tannins on lipase activity. In conclusion, cultivar variation was detected for both hydrolytic rancidity and esterase activity in the studied genotypes, esterase activity being the principal factor explaining the variation found for the former trait. Therefore, it may be possible to create new cultivars with increased stability against hydrolytic rancidity by selecting for lower esterase activity.  相似文献

Rice bran contains phytochemicals such as E vitamers (i.e., tocopherols and tocotrienols) and the γoryzanol fraction that reportedly may have positive effects on human health. Brown rice, rice bran, and rice bran extracts are therefore attractive candidates for use in the development of functional foods. The objectives of this project were to quantify the effects of genetics versus environment on the tocopherol, tocotrienol, and γ‐oryzanol contents of Southern U.S. rice and to determine associations between the levels of these phytochemicals. Seven rice cultivars grown in four states during two years were studied. Averaged across all samples, the content of α‐tocotrienol > γ‐tocotrienol > α‐tocopherol > gamma;‐tocopherol, and the tocopherols and tocotrienols were 27.5 and 72.5% of the total E vitamer content, respectively. Total E vitamer content ranged from 179 to 389 mg/kg and γ‐oryzanol from 2,510 to 6,864 mg/kg. A low correlation between total E vitamer and γ‐oryzanol contents suggests that to obtain rice bran with high levels of both of these fractions, new cultivars would need to be produced using hybridization and selection. In general, growing environment had a greater effect on E vitamer and γ‐oryzanol levels than did genotype. Therefore, rice breeders selecting genotypes with optimized levels of E vitamers and γ‐oryzanol will need to grow their breeding material in multiple years and locations.  相似文献
