The podzolization process is studied through lipids in nine characteristic podzol horizons. Organic matter accumulates particularly with aluminium in the Bh horizon, while the hard, cemented Bs horizon below this is formed mainly by iron oxides. The low soil pH seems to have no great influence on the preservation of lipids as reflected by the absolute amounts present and the presence of bacterial lipid markers throughout the profile. Independent of soil pH, lipids accumulate in organically enriched horizons. Albeit, high molecular weight organic compounds accumulate to a relatively greater extent than lipids in these horizons. A lipid signal related to the aerial parts, i.e. leaves and flowers, of Calluna is observed only in the O horizon. This ‘n‐alkane, steroid and triterpenoids’ signal is quickly lost in the underlying Ah horizon due to (bacterial) oxidation. The other total lipid extracts obtained are dominated by root‐derived compounds. In subsoil horizons rich in organic matter, i.e. the Ahb and Bh horizons, root‐derived friedooleanan and steroid compounds dominate the total lipid signal. Degraded horizons, poor in organic matter, i.e. the E2, Bhs, Bs and B/C horizons, are dominated by C22 and C24ω‐hydroxy acids, long‐chain (> C20) n‐alkanoic acids with a strong even‐over‐odd predominance and C22 and C24n‐alkanols. Steroid and root‐derived triterpenoids with a friedooleanan structure have been removed from these horizons through degradation. Based on total organic carbon content and lipid composition, the formation of an E1 horizon has started, but is not yet complete. In the Ahb horizon, a contribution from buried vegetation to the total lipid signal is still present, although degradation and an input from roots have significantly altered the original signal. Overall, lipid data indicate that degradation (microbial oxidation) is an important process that should be taken into account, in addition to leaching, when describing podzolization processes in soils.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of remote sensing spatial resolution on estimates of characteristic land-cover change (LCC) and LCC-related above-ground biomass change (Δbiomass) in three study sites representative of the East Siberian boreal forest. Data included LCC estimated using an existing Landsat-derived land-cover dataset for 1990 and 2000, and above-ground standing biomass stocks simulated by the FAREAST forest succession model and applied on a pixel basis. At the base 60 m resolution, several landscape pattern metrics were derived to describe the characteristic LCC types. LCC data were progressively degraded to 240, 480, and 960 m. LCC proportions and Δbiomass were derived at each of the coarser resolutions and scale dependences of LCC and Δbiomass were analyzed. Compared to the base 60 m resolution, the Logged LCC type was highly scale dependent and was consistently underestimated at coarser resolutions. The Burned type was under- or over-estimated depending strongly on its patch size. Estimated at the base 60 m resolution, modeled biomass increased in two sites (i.e., 3.0 and 6.4 Mg C ha−1 for the Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk sites, respectively) and declined slightly in one site (i.e., −0.5 Mg C ha−1 for the Irkutsk site) between the two dates. At the degraded resolutions, the estimated Δbiomass increased to 3.3 and 7.0 Mg C ha−1 for the Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk sites, while it declined to −0.8 Mg C ha−1 for the Irkutsk site. Results indicate that LCC and Δbiomass values may be progressively amplified in either direction as resolution is degraded, depending on the mean patch size (MPS) of disturbances, and that the error of LCC and Δbiomass estimates also increases at coarser resolutions.  相似文献

N tau-methylhistidine (NMH) concentrations were determined in acid hydrolysates of 12 common feedstuffs for ruminants, and duodenal digesta from steers fed alfalfa haylage and high-moisture corn. For six species of grass hays, NMH concentrations ranged from nondetectable (ND; less than .1 nmol/g dry matter) to .6 nmol/g dry matter. Two legume hays had NMH concentrations of .9 and 2.0 nmol/g dry matter, respectively. For corn silage, high-moisture corn, beet pulp and soybean meal, NMH concentrations were 1.3, 1.1, 1.5 and 2.2 nmol/g dry matter, respectively. Duodenal digesta NMH concentrations ranged from ND to 1.2 nmol/g dry matter. When pure NMH (1 mM) was incubated with rumen fluid in vitro for 8 h, only 14% was degraded while leucine (1 mM) was totally degraded. From the feedstuffs used in this study, results show that exogenous (dietary) NMH is not a concern in skeletal muscle protein turnover studies in cattle using urinary NMH excretion because it can be calculated that potential NMH intake from the preceding feedstuffs would be less than 1% of normal urinary excretion and that ruminal microbes are not a potential source of NMH. NMH was resistant to in vitro ruminal degradation. The in vitro ruminal NMH degradation results suggest that when feedstuffs containing at least 15 nmol/g dry matter are fed (far greater than values observed in this study) a significant proportion of urinary NMH would arise directly from exogenous sources and would invalidate the use of this technique in assessing protein turnover in cattle.  相似文献

SUMMARY The extent and causes of sheep losses in the semi-arid Mallee region of north-western Victoria were assessed by interviewing the owners of 79 randomly selected farms running 241 flocks in 1987/88 and 245 flocks in 1988/89. Mean annual losses were higher in ram flocks (21%) than in ewe flocks (7%), in flocks of non-Merino sheep (rams 24%, ewes 11%, weaners 5%) than in Merino (rams 11%, ewes 6%, wethers 4%, weaners 4%) and in ewe flocks 3 or more years old (10%) than in young ewe flocks (3.5%). In flocks where losses exceeded 5%, the causes most often reported by farmers were blowfly strike (especially in Merino sheep and weaners), ewe losses in autumn close to lambing, and heliotrope (Heliotropium europaeum) poisoning. Heliotrope poisoning was considered by the authors to be the main reason for the higher losses in old ewes than in young ewes and in non-Merino sheep than in Merino sheep. Losses of ewes associated with pregnancy and lambing were considered by the authors to be often predisposed by liver damage caused by heliotrope poisoning, and high losses in non-Merino ram flocks were attributed to both heliotrope poisoning and their ability to escape through boundary fences. Reasons for continuing high losses due to enterotoxaemia are discussed. Losses due to gastro-intestinal parasites, footrot and foot abscess were low.  相似文献

SUMMARY A multivalent footrot vaccine has been developed, containing pilus antigens produced in recombinant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and representing all nine serogroups of Dichelobacter (Bacteroides) nodosus commonly recognised in the field. The responses of sheep to the multivalent vaccine have been compared with those to monovalent vaccines representing only a single serogroup. Antigenie competition between serogroups occurred in sheep immunised with the multivalent formulation, but high levels of protection were still achieved. The study showed that in multivalent footrot vaccines, antigenic competition is predominantly due to the presence of a family of immunologically-related pilus antigens rather than to interference by extraneous proteins.  相似文献

Anthelmintic resistance in Australian sheep nematode populations   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
SUMMARY The resistance status of gastro–intestinal nematodes to anthelmintics was evaluated on 881 sheep farms throughout Australia during 1991–92. Resistance was shown to be widespread. Overall, 85% of farms had sheep infected with nematodes resistant to benzimidazole, 65% to levamisole and 34% to combination (benzimidazole + levamisole) products. Resistance to ivermectin was not detcted. On only 9% of farms did all anthelmintic groups reduce egg counts by greater than or equal to 95%. The culture of faeces from untreated sheep showed Telodorsagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus spp, Chabertia ovina and Haemonchus contortus to be the principal species. The nature and prevalence of resistance was not significantly correlated with stocking rate. However, resistance to combination products was almost twice as prevalent on farms in areas with an average annual rainfall of greater than 500 mm.  相似文献

There is a growing recognition of the harmful effects of lead exposure on avian and mammalian scavengers. This can lead to both lethal and non-lethal effects which may negatively impact wildlife populations. Our objective was to assess medium-term lead exposure in wild Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii). Frozen liver samples (n = 41), opportunistically collected in 2017–2022, were analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine liver lead concentrations. These results were then used to calculate the proportion of animals with elevated lead levels (>5 mg/kg dry weight) and examine the role of explanatory variables that may have influenced the results. The majority of samples analysed were from the south-east corner of Tasmania, within 50 km of Hobart. No Tasmanian devil samples were found to have elevated lead levels. The median liver lead concentration was 0.17 mg/kg (range 0.05–1.32 mg/kg). Female devils were found to have significantly higher liver lead concentrations than males (P = 0.013), which was likely related to lactation, but other variables (age, location, body mass) were not significant. These results suggest that wild Tasmanian devil populations currently show minimal medium-term evidence of exposure to lead pollution, although samples were concentrated in peri-urban areas. The results provide a baseline level which can be used to assess the impact of any future changes in lead use in Tasmania. Furthermore, these data can be used as a comparison for lead exposure studies in other mammalian scavengers, including other carnivorous marsupial species.  相似文献
