Probiotic bacteria are known to support the gut health of shrimp and thereby improve performance and production efficiency. Among other factors, the timing of probiotic application is of importance. Thus, this experiment (12‐week feeding trial followed by intramuscular Vibrio challenge) aimed to compare the effects of a multispecies probiotic feed supplement (AquaStar® Growout, 3 g/kg feed) in a continuous application with three different alternating application protocols on growth performance and immune parameters in whiteleg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Juvenile shrimp were stocked in a recirculating aquaculture system at a density of 15 shrimp/100 L and were fed an appropriate commercial diet throughout the whole trial. Tanks were randomly assigned to the treatments, and shrimp were fed one of the following five experimental treatments: T1: no probiotics (control), T2: probiotics continuously, T3: alternating 1 week probiotics, 1 week control, T4: alternating 2 weeks probiotics, 2 weeks control, or T5: alternating 2 weeks probiotics, 1 week control. While any AquaStar® Growout application significantly improved growth performance, only continuous application delayed mortality after the Vibrio challenge. Results suggest that the beneficial effects were most pronounced when AquaStar® Growout was fed either continuously or according to the T5 treatment.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bexagliflozin on glycemic control in poorly regulated diabetic cats and to evaluate for adverse events associated with this medication.Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors are a newer class of drugs used in the management of humans with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the orally administered drug, bexagliflozin in a group of poorly regulated diabetic cats over a 4-week study period. Five client-owned cats with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus receiving insulin therapy were enrolled. Bexagliflozin was administered once daily. Serum fructosamine, serum biochemistry profile, and 10-hour blood glucose curves were assessed at baseline (Day 0), Day 14, and Day 28. All cats had a significant reduction in insulin dose requirement (P = 0.015) and insulin was discontinued in 2 cats. There was a significant decrease in blood glucose concentration obtained from blood glucose concentration curves during the study period (P = 0.022). Serum fructosamine decreased in 4 of the 5 cats with a median decrease of 152 μmol/L (range: 103 to 241 μmol/L), which was not statistically significant (P = 0.117). No cats had any documented episodes of hypoglycemia. Adverse effects were mild. The addition of bexagliflozin significantly improved diabetic management in this group of cats.  相似文献

Background

Mannheimia haemolytica is an important etiological agent in bovine respiratory disease.

Objectives

Explore risk factors for recovery of susceptible and resistant M. haemolytica in feedlot cattle and explore associations with health outcomes.

Animals

Cattle (n = 5,498) from 4 feedlots sampled at arrival and later in feeding period.

Methods

Susceptibility of M. haemolytica isolates tested for 21 antimicrobials. Records of antimicrobial use and health events analyzed using multivariable regression.

Results

M. haemolytica recovered from 29% of cattle (1,596/5,498), 13.1% at arrival (95% CI, 12.3–14.1%), and 19.8% at second sampling (95% CI, 18.7–20.9%). Nearly half of study cattle received antimicrobial drugs (AMDs) parenterally, mostly as metaphylactic treatment at arrival. Individual parenteral AMD exposures were associated with decreased recovery of M. haemolytica (OR, 0.2; 95% CI, 0.02–1.2), whereas exposure in penmates was associated with increased recovery (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.05–2.2). Most isolates were pan‐susceptible (87.8%; 95% CI, 87.0–89.4%). AMD exposures were not associated with resistance to any single drug. Multiply‐resistant isolates were rare (5.9%; 95% CI, 5.1–6.9%), but AMD exposures in pen mates were associated with increased odds of recovering multiply‐resistant M. haemolytica (OR, 23.9; 95% CI, 8.4–68.3). Cattle positive for M. haemolytica on arrival were more likely to become ill within 10 days (OR, 1.7; 95% CI, 1.1–2.4).

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Resistance generally was rare in M. haemolytica. Antimicrobial drug exposures in penmates increased the risk of isolating susceptible and multiply‐resistant M. haemolytica, a finding that could be explained by contagious spread.  相似文献

Measurements of stratospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations were analyzed to investigate stratospheric transport rates. Temporal variations in tropospheric CO2 were observed to propagate into the stratosphere, showing that tropospheric air enters the lower tropical stratosphere continuously, ascends, and is transported rapidly (in less than 1 month) to both hemispheres. The mean age A of stratospheric air determined from CO2 data is approximately 5 years in the mid-stratosphere. The mean age is mathematically equivalent to a conserved tracer analogous to exhaust from stratospheric aircraft. Comparison of values for A from models and observations indicates that current model simulations likely underestimate pollutant concentrations from proposed stratospheric aircraft by 25 to 100 percent.  相似文献

Acute toxicity of Pb to the water flea; (Daphnia sp) and Copepod, (Cyclop sp) both important component of zooplankton diet of fish was determined by static assay. A positive relationship between percentage mortality and exposure concentration was found in all tests. Mean 24-h LC50, 48-h LC50 and 96-h LC50 values were 2.51?±?0.0.04 mg l?1, 1.88?±?0.06 mg l?1 and 1.65?±?0.19 mg l?1 for Daphnia spp and 3.11?±?0.03 mg l?1, 2.97?±?0.05 mg l?1 and 2.61?±?0.09 mg l?1 for Cyclop spp, respectively. For all tested species did the LC50 values decrease with time; the decrease was more marked for Daphnia spp. Observed symptoms include spiral movement followed by change of body colour to white and rapid disintegration of the skin. The Daphnia spp. appear to be more sensitive to Pb poison than Cyclop spp. The results showed that concentrations of Lead (Pb) in excess of 0.19 mg l?1 and 0.30 mg l?1 can be potentially harmful to Daphnia magna and Cyclop spp respectively.  相似文献
