An experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of the side of ovulation with respect to the previously gravid uterine horn on fertility of cows inseminated at one of two periods postpartum. All cows were treated with an intravaginal progesterone insert for 7 d and received estradiol benzoate (2 mg, i.m.) at the time of device insertion, prostaglandin F2alpha (25 mg, i.m.) at the time of device removal, and estradiol benzoate (1 mg, i.m.) 30 h after device removal. All cows were inseminated 28 to 30 h after the second treatment with estradiol benzoate, regardless of observed estrus. Cows treated in Period 1 received inserts at 16 to 20 d postpartum and were inseminated at 25 to 29 d postpartum. Cows treated in Period 2 received inserts at 26 to 30 d postpartum and were inseminated at 35 to 39 d postpartum. Diameter of the largest follicle at insert removal was greater in cows treated in Period 2 (10.1 +/- 0.3; mm +/- SEM) than in cows treated in Period 1 (9.1 +/- 0.3; P < .05). Diameter did not differ with the side of ovulation in respect to the previously gravid uterine horn. Diameter was greater in cows 5 to 9 (10.3 +/- 0.3) than in cows 3 to 4 (9.0 +/- 0.3) or 10 to 13 (9.4 +/- 0.6) yr of age (P < .01). The proportion of cows that ovulated from the ovary contralateral to the previously gravid uterine horn was greater (P < .05) than of those that ovulated from the ipsilateral ovary, and the incidence of ovulation was reduced in cows 3 to 4 yr of age (P < .01). Conception rate tended to be greater for ovulation from the ipsilateral compared with the contralateral ovary, relative to the previously gravid uterine horn (P < .10) and for ovulation from the right than the left ovary (P < .06). Conception rate was less if cows ovulated a follicle that was < 9 mm than a follicle > or = 9 mm in diameter at insert removal (P < .01) and was greater in cows inseminated in June than in April or May (P < .05). In conclusion, in cows in which estrus was synchronized at 25 to 39 d postpartum, ovulation from either the ovary ipsilateral to the previously gravid uterine horn, or the right ovary, tended to increase fertility.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine pharmacokinetics and plasma concentrations of erythromycin and related compounds after intragastric administration of erythromycin phosphate and erythromycin estolate to healthy foals. ANIMALS: 11 healthy 2- to 6-month-old foals. PROCEDURE: Food was withheld from foals overnight before intragastric administration of erythromycin estolate (25 mg/kg of body weight; n = 8) and erythromycin phosphate (25 mg/kg; 7). Four foals received both drugs with 2 weeks between treatments. Plasma erythromycin concentrations were determined at various times after drug administration by use of high-performance liquid chromatography. Maximum plasma peak concentrations, time to maximum concentrations, area under plasma concentration versus time curves, half-life of elimination, and mean residence times were determined from concentration versus time curves. RESULTS: Maximum peak concentration of erythromycin A after administration of erythromycin phosphate was significantly greater than after administration of erythromycin estolate (2.9 +/- 1.1 microg/ml vs 1.0 +/- 0.82 microg/ml). Time to maximum concentration was shorter after administration of erythromycin phosphate than after erythromycin estolate (0.71 +/- 0.29 hours vs 1.7 +/- 1.2 hours). Concentrations of anhydroerythromycin A were significantly less 1 and 3 hours after administration of erythromycin estolate than after administration of erythromycin phosphate. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Plasma concentrations of erythromycin A remained > 0.25 microg/ml (reported minimum inhibitory concentration for Rhodococcus equi) for at least 4 hours after intragastric administration of erythromycin phosphate or erythromycin estolate, suggesting that the recommended dosage for either formulation (25 mg/kg, q 6 h) should be adequate for treatment of R equi infections in foals.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between plasma beta-endorphin (EN) concentrations and exercise intensity and duration in horses. ANIMALS: 8 mares with a mean age of 6 years (range, 3 to 13 years) and mean body weight of 450 kg. PROCEDURE: Horses were exercised for 20 minutes at 60% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and to fatigue at 95% V02max. Plasma EN concentrations were determined before exercise, after a 10-minute warmup period, after 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes at 60% VO2max or at the point of fatigue (95% VO2max), and at regular intervals after exercise. Glucose concentrations were determined at the same times EN concentrations were measured. Plasma lactate concentration was measured 5 minutes after exercise. RESULTS: Maximum EN values were recorded 0 to 45 minutes after horses completed each test. Significant time and intensity effects on EN concentrations were detected. Concentrations were significantly higher following exercise at 95% VO2max, compared with those after 20 minutes of exercise at 60% VO2max (605.2 +/- 140.6 vs 312.3 +/- 53.1 pg/ml). Plasma EN concentration was not related to lactate concentration and was significantly but weakly correlated with glucose concentration for exercise at both intensities (r = 0.21 and 0.30 for 60 and 95% VO2max, respectively). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A critical exercise threshold exists for EN concentration in horses, which is 60% VO2max or less and is related to exercise intensity and duration. Even under conditions of controlled exercise there may be considerable differences in EN concentrations between horses. This makes the value of comparing horses on the basis of their EN concentration questionable.  相似文献

U.S. packers must have quantitative criteria for selection of pork bellies and Boston butts for export to South Korea. Pork bellies (IMPS 409A) and Boston butts (IMPS 409A, 406B, 407) were selected from normal production in a U.S. pork packing plant and transported to Seoul, South Korea, via seafreighter in refrigerated containers (frozen < -5 degrees C) or via air freight (fresh > 0 degrees C; frozen < -5 degrees C). Participants at the Seoul Food Show were surveyed about their preferences for specific quality attributes of these cuts. Bellies were selected to differ in seam fat content (low = < 20%, moderate = 20 to 40%, high = > 40% extractable fat), lean color (pale = L* > 50, medium = L* 48-50, dark = L* < 48), weight (3.36, 4.04, or 5.36 kg), state of refrigeration and packaging (frozen, poly-wrapped; chilled, poly-wrapped; frozen, vacuum-packaged; chilled, vacuum-packaged), shape (round, wavy, square), and belly thickness (3.81, 4.32, or 4.90 cm). Boston butts were selected to differ in USDA marbling score (Slight, Small, Modest, Moderate, and Slightly Abundant), seam fat content (low = < 10%, moderate = 10 to 20% fat, high = > 20% extractable fat), lean color (pale = L* > 44, medium = L* 40-42, dark = L* < 38), weight (2.91, 3.82, or 4.66 kg), state of refrigeration and packaging (frozen, poly-wrapped; chilled, poly-wrapped; frozen, vacuum-packaged; chilled, vacuum-packaged), and shape (square, oblong, round). In Seoul, pork subprimals were tempered (if frozen), sliced, and arrayed by quality attribute and category in a retail display case. Over 4 d of testing, attendees (n = 210) of the food show were asked to rate the displayed samples for each quality attribute on a standardized ballot. Mid-weight (3.82 kg) Boston butts that displayed Moderate or higher USDA marbling scores with moderate amounts of seam fat, Japanese lean color scores of 2 or 4, round geometric shape, and that were vacuum-packaged and transported to Korea in the freshly chilled state best characterized the quality attribute preferences of respondents. Pork bellies that exhibited moderate amounts of seam fat, Japanese lean color scores of 3, square shape, belly thickness of 3.94 cm, approximate weight of 4.04 kg, and that were vacuum-packaged and transported to Korea in the freshly chilled state best met the quality needs of South Korean customers.  相似文献

The examination of presenting signs has always played an important role in the diagnosis of diseases in animal populations. In the case of diseases of tropical cattle, such expertise is often scarce and confined to those experts with many years of experience. To capture, conserve and disseminate such valuable expert knowledge remains a key challenge to the application of knowledge-based systems in veterinary medicine. In this communication, we explore the use of a Bayesian belief network to quantify expert opinion with a view to estimating the likelihood of various diseases in the presence and absence of certain signs. Information was elicited from a panel of 44 experienced veterinarians to provide the response matrix of 27 signs associated with 20 commonly occurring diseases in sub-Saharan cattle. Using this prior information, estimates of the probability of certain signs occurring with each disease were calculated from which the Bayesian belief network was able to propagate the posterior probability of each of the diseases based on the observed signs. The method as an aid in making diagnosis is discussed. It is recognised that such an approach is but one strand in the process of arriving at a diagnosis. For ease of use and accessibility, the approach has been converted into the software program CaDDiS (Cattle Disease Diagnosis System) which is available for consultation on the World Wide Web.  相似文献

The influence of hormonal superovulatory preparations Folistiman (450 IU FSH, Spofa, Prague) and serum gonadotropin (1500 IU PMSG, Spofa, Prague) on monoamine oxidase (MAO), the degradative enzyme of catecholamines, was investigated in some areas of the brain regulating reproductive functions (area preoptica of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and pineal gland) in ewes with synchronized oestrus (20 mg chlorsuperlutin) during the oestrous period using a radiochemical method. After intramuscular administration of 1500 IU PMSG, marked increase of MAO activity was found in the area preoptica (p < 0.05) and in the pituitary gland (p < 0.01) in comparison with the control group. No change occurred in MAO activity after ovarian stimulation with FSH. Administration of the above superovulatory preparations failed to induce MAO activity in the pineal gland of sheep.  相似文献

Fatty acid composition, marbling score and melting point data collected between 1994 and 1996 were analysed. The data were from the adipose tissue of 764 Angus, Belgian Blue, Hereford, Jersey, Limousin, South Devon and Wagyu crossbred cattle slaughtered after lot‐feeding at 500 days of age. The aim was to investigate sire‐breed differences and to estimate heritability and genetic and phenotypic correlations. Significant breed differences were found: Jersey crosses had the highest marbling score and Belgian Blue crosses had the lowest. Limousin crosses had the highest melting point and Jersey crosses the lowest. South Devon crosses had the highest proportion of stearate and Jersey crosses the lowest. Desaturation indices in C16 and C18 fatty acids were highest in Jersey crosses and lowest in Limousin and South Devon crosses. In contrast, there were no breed differences in the proportions of palmitate, oleate, total saturated, total mono‐unsaturated fatty acids and elongation index. Heritability estimates of individual fatty acids and their summations, melting point and marbling were low to moderately low (0.05–0.27). Strong genetic correlations of melting point and desaturation index in C16 fatty acids (‐0.93), melting point and stearate (0.62), marbling and stearate (‐0.71) and marbling and desaturation index in C18 fatty acids (0.62) were observed. Phenotypic correlation were generally low. The results imply that fatty acids in the adipose tissue of lot‐fed cattle have a moderately low heritability, hence genetic progress might be slow.  相似文献

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the use of romifidine as a premedicant in dogs before general anesthesia induced with propofol or thiopentone and maintained with halothane-N2O. Fifteen healthy dogs were anesthetized twice. Each dog received, as preanesthetic protocol, atropine (10 microg/kg, IM) and romifidine (40 microg/kg, IM); induction was delivered with propofol or thiopentone and anesthesia was maintained with halothane and N2O for 1 h. Some cardiovascular and respiratory variables and recovery times were recorded. Induction doses of propofol or thiopentone and the percentage of halothane necessary for maintaining anesthesia were also registered. Thiopentone as an induction agent is more respiratory depressive but is less hypotensive than propofol. Thiopentone reduces further the percentage of halothane necessary for maintaining the anesthesia. However, the quality of recovery is poorer, as the time to extubation is longer and the dogs occasionally had a violent recovery. The combination of romifidine, atropine, propofol, halothane, and N2O appears to be an effective combination for inducing and maintaining general anesthesia in healthy dogs.  相似文献
