This paper uses a multiple case study approach to researching people’s everyday lives and experiences of six community farms and gardens in diverse settings in China and England. We argue that collective understandings of community are bound up in everyday action in particular spaces and times. Successful community farms and gardens are those that are able to provide suitable spaces and times for these actions so that their members can enjoy multiple benefit streams. These benefits are largely universal: in very different situations in both England and China, CSA members make strong connections with the land, the farmers and other members, even in cases where they rarely visit the farms and gardens. This suggests that community farming and gardening initiatives possess multi-dimensional transformational potential. Not only do they offer a buffer against industrialised and remote food systems, but they also represent therapeutic landscapes valued by those who have experienced time spent at or in connection with them. Our findings indicate that—regardless of location or cultural context—these benefits are durable, so that people who have been engaged in multiple activities at a community farm or garden continue to enjoy these benefits long after most of their engagement has ceased.  相似文献

This study examined the occupational aspirations of university students of agriculture in Edo State, with particular reference to agriculture-related careers. Factors affecting the university students’ willingness to pursue an agricultural career were also determined. Data from 247 respondents randomly sampled from three universities were subjected to frequency distribution and logistic regression analysis. Results revealed that 70.9% of the respondents were willing to pursue an agricultural career and that their willingness is significantly influenced by their attitude toward agriculture, academic performance, gender, and class level. It is recommended that students be exposed to job opportunities that are available to graduates of agriculture and that attitudes toward agriculture be improved by exposing students to successful members of society who studied agriculture and/or are involved in agriculture-related activities.  相似文献

Understanding the population structure of tropical anguillids residing in the Pacific is vital for their conservation management. Here, the population genetic structure of five sympatric freshwater eels (Anguilla marmorata Quoy & Gaimard, Amegastoma Kaup, Aobscura Steindachner, Areinhardtii Günther and Aaustralis Richardson) across 11 western South Pacific (WSP) islands was investigated based on partial nucleotide sequences of the mtDNA control region and the nuclear GTH2b genes of 288 newly collected samples jointly with existing sequences. WSP anguillids are characterised by overall high levels of genetic diversity. Both mtDNA and nuclear sequences provided no evidence for distinct geographic clines or barriers in any of the species across the WSP. The occurrence of admixed individuals between A. marmorata and A. megastoma was confirmed, and a new possible occurrence of a further species was revealed (Ainterioris Whitley on Bougainville Island). All species showed evidence for demographic population growth in the Pleistocene, and a subsequent population reduction for A. megastoma. Common spawning grounds and mixing of larvae by ocean currents could promote the lack of pronounced isolation by distance, a finding that has significant implications for the future management of anguillids in the area.  相似文献

Marketing of coproducts such as corn gluten meal (CGM) and corn gluten feed (CGF) is important to the maize wet‐milling industry. High phosphorus concentrations could lead to limited markets for CGF due to its potential to increase phosphorus in animal wastes. The objective was to measure the concentration and flow of phosphorus in the wet‐milling process and identify streams that could be altered. Samples were taken from 21 process streams of three facilities and the phosphorus content of each was determined. Flow of phosphorus was simulated using a computer model for a 2,700 tonne/day (105,000 bu/day) wet‐milling plant. Phosphorus concentrations of streams varied from <10 mg/kg to >14,000 mg/kg. Phosphorus content of many streams differed significantly among facilities. Flow of phosphorus (kg/day) varied dramatically among streams. However light steepwater, light gluten, and process water streams (5,960, 3,080, and 970 kg/day, respectively) accounted for much of the phosphorus flow. Modification of these streams could reduce phosphorus content of coproducts. The high phosphorus content of either CGF or CGM could be reduced markedly if phosphorus was reduced in the appropriate streams.  相似文献
