Objective  To evaluate the effect of lens design and biomaterial on formation of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) and refractive correction.
Animals studied  Sixty dogs undergoing bilateral phacoemulsification for mature or diabetic cataracts.
Procedures  One randomly selected eye received a rounded edge 41D polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) intraocular replacement lens (IOL) and the contralateral eye received either a squared edge 41D hydrophilic acrylic IOL ( n  = 35) or a squared edge 40D hydrophobic acrylic IOL ( n  = 25). At the (mean = 79 day) reexamination period, PCO was graded using direct slit-lamp observation and by masked observer evaluation of digital images of the IOLs. Streak retinoscopy and B-mode ultrasound were performed at this period.
Results  The PCO score via direct slit-lamp was significantly lower for the hydrophilic acrylic IOL when compared to the PMMA IOL. Masked observer evaluation of digital images revealed that the acrylic IOLs had lower but generally not statistically significant PCO scores than the PMMA IOLs. Streak retinoscopy showed that the PMMA IOL was significantly closer to emmetropia (+0.44 D) when compared to either the hydrophilic acrylic (+0.96 D) or the hydrophobic acrylic (+1.2 D) IOLs. B-mode ultrasonography revealed the center of the hydrophilic acrylic IOL is 0.31 mm closer to the retina and the center of the hydrophobic acrylic IOL is 0.63 mm further from the retina when compared to the center of the PMMA to retina distance.
Conclusions  Square edged foldable acrylic IOLs show a predisposition towards generating slightly less PCO than round edged PMMA IOLs in the early postoperative period, however, both acrylic IOLs had greater persistent hyperopia than the PMMA IOLs.  相似文献

Ovarian follicle growth in cattle culminates in the selection of a single dominant follicle which attains the ability for final maturation and ovulation once or twice during the luteal phase and at the end of the oestrous cycle, as well as during other reproductive states. This review will describe in detail the first follicle wave of the cycle leading to selection of the first wave dominant follicle, indicating the specific gonadotrophin dependencies of cohort and dominant follicles, and relating follicle fate to steroidogenesis. As a differential gonadotrophin response of growing antral follicles during the follies‐stimulating hormone (FSH) decline may determine which follicle becomes selected, first wave follicles are also characterized in relation to intrafollicular growth factors, which may modify the gonadotrophin response, such as inhibins and members of the insulin‐like growth factor (IGF) family. Subsequently, the follicular control of the transient FSH rise and decline so crucial to dominant follicle selection will be discussed. It is concluded that successful hormonal manipulation of follicle wave growth and dominant follicle selection will depend on our detailed understanding of the gonadotrophin requirements of differentiating wave follicles.  相似文献

Analysis of the interlayer infrared conductivity of cuprate high-transition temperature superconductors reveals an anomalously large energy scale extending up to midinfrared frequencies that can be attributed to formation of the superconducting condensate. This unusual effect is observed in a va- riety of materials, including Tl2Ba2CuO6+x, La2-xSrxCuO4, and YBa2Cu3O6.6, which show an incoherent interlayer response in the normal state. Midinfrared range condensation was examined in the context of sum rules that can be formulated for the complex conductivity. One possible interpretation of these experiments is in terms of a kinetic energy change associated with the superconducting transition.  相似文献

The presence of antibody was detected by agglutination tests in the serum of calves four days after vaccination with Brucella abortus strain 19. Titres had reached a maximum by seven to ten days post-vaccination. Sucrose density-gradient ultracentrifugation demonstrated that the earliest antibodies were macroglobulins, IgM (19Sγ; γM)-globulins. Lighter antibodies, IgG (7Sγ2; γG)-globulins, appeared a few days later. With time, antibody titres fell, IgM declining somewhat more quickly than IgG. After revaccination some seven months later, there was a rapid rise in both IgM and IgG.

Anion-exchange column chromatography (DEAE-cellulose) and gel filtration (Sephadex G-200) were applied in separating the two forms of antibody. The former method, in which a gradient buffer system was used, proved to be the more efficient; the IgG antibodies apeared in early eluates at pH 7.8 to 8.0 and low ionic strength, 0.03M, whereas IgM was eluted late when the pH had fallen below 6.0 and the molarity had increased to beyond 0.2. DEAE cellulose chromatography detected IgG as well as IgM sera collected as early as five days after vaccination.

The influence of moisture content (MC) on the dynamic modulus of elasticity of structural lumber was investigated using transverse vibration testing methods. The flexural rigidity (EI) of a transversely vibrating beam was calculated as the modulus of elasticity (E) multiplied by the moment of inertia (I). The increase in E of lumber due to reduction in moisture content was computed by assuming that the flexural rigidity remains constant with changes in moisture content. Reductions in I due to shrinkage were compensated by the increases in E which led to a proposal for a species-dependent MC adjustment model for modulus of elasticity. The model was validated using 38 mm × 89 mm × 4,290 mm western Canadian Spruce–Pine–Fir dimension lumber evaluated in the “as-received” and “dry” conditions. Results obtained from the species-dependent model agreed closely with those from the E adjustment equation for dimension lumber given in ASTM D 1990. The results show that the ASTM moisture adjustment procedures can be used to adjust dynamic E values for changes in moisture content also.  相似文献

Background

Ehrlichia ewingii, which causes disease in dogs and people, is the most common Ehrlichia spp. infecting dogs in the United States, but little is known about how long Eewingii infection persists in dogs.

Hypothesis/Objectives

To evaluate the persistence of natural infection with E. ewingii in dogs.

Animals

Four Class A Beagles; no previous exposure to ticks or tick‐borne infectious agents.

Methods

Dogs were exposed to ticks by weekly walks through tick habitat in north central Oklahoma; dogs positive for infection with Ehrlichia spp. by sequence‐confirmed PCR and peptide‐specific serology were evaluated for 733 days (D). Whole blood was collected once weekly for PCR, and serum was collected once monthly for detection of antibodies to Ehrlichia canis (peptide p16), Ehrlichia chaffeensis (indirect fluorescence antibody [IFA] and variable‐length PCR target [VLPT]), and E. ewingii (peptide p28).

Results

All dogs (4/4) became infected with Ehrlichia spp. as evidenced by seroconversion on IFA to E. chaffeensis (4/4); PCR detection of E. ewingii (4/4) and E. chaffeensis (2/4) DNA using both nested and real‐time assays; and presence of specific antibodies to E. ewingii (4/4) and E. chaffeensis (2/4). Infection with E. chaffeensis was not detected after D55. Intermittent E. ewingii rickettsemia persisted in 3 of 4 dogs for as long as 733 days.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Our data demonstrate that dogs infected with E. ewingii from tick feeding are capable of maintaining infection with this pathogen long‐term, and may serve as a reservoir host for the maintenance of E. ewingii in nature.  相似文献

Greenland ice core records provide clear evidence of rapid changes in climate in a variety of climate indicators. In this work, rapid climate change events in the Northern and Southern hemispheres are compared on the basis of an examination of changes in atmospheric circulation developed from two ice cores. High-resolution glaciochemical series, covering the period 10,000 to 16,000 years ago, from a central Greenland ice core and a new site in east Antarctica display similar variability. These findings suggest that rapid climate change events occur more frequently in Antarctica than previously demonstrated.  相似文献

Persistent soil infestations with Phaeolus schweinitzii were successfully established in the forest environment using basidiospores, but there was no evidence that the fungus spread freeely through the soil while existing as a competitive saprophyte. This article offers some tips on working with statistics and develops four relatively simple procedures to deal with most kinds of data with which veterinarians work. The criterion for a procedure to be a "Hood of the Truck Statistics" (HOT Stats) technique is that it must be simple enough to be done with pencil, paper, and a calculator. The goal of HOT Stats is to have the tools available to run quick analyses in only a few minutes so that decisions can be made in a timely fashion. The discipline allows us to move away from the all-too-common guess work about effects and differences we perceive following a change in treatment or management. The techniques allow us to move toward making more defensible, credible, and more quantifiably "risk-aware" real-time recommendations to our clients.  相似文献
