A continuously swimming school of 12 dark-adapted mackerel was challenged to show visual reaction to barriers made from horizontal parallel lines (5 cm apart) of either monofilament nylon (0.40 mm diameter) gillnet material or, for comparison, the more visible twisted multifilament nylon (1.73 mm diameter). Six colours of each material were tested. The barriers were placed across the path of the approaching mackerel school while their behaviour was observed at low intensities of green light arranged to mimic undersea conditions. At very low light levels, the mackerel swam without hesitation through the barrier, whereas at higher light levels they turned or paused, indicating that they visually aware of the presence of the lines. The light level thresholds for visual reaction for the six colours of monofilament nylon were between −0.06 and −1.0 log lx, and for the same colours of twisted multifilament nylon were between −1.8 and −3.6 log lx. These findings are discussed in relation to the natural intensities of light in the sea, and the prediction of the visibility of drift and gillnet materials.  相似文献

During infection, the acute phase response triggers the release of acute phase proteins (APP), alpha-(1) acid glycoprotein (AGP), serum amyloid A (SAA) and Pig-MAP into the circulation, accompanied by a decrease in plasma levels of transthyretin. We quantified the association between these APP in 26 apparently healthy pigs from two breeds, 13 Large White and 13 Meishan (16 male; 10 female). There was a significant correlation between plasma levels of haptoglobin and Pig-MAP (r=0.57; p<0.05), but no significant associations between any of the other APP tested. We also measured the relationship between PigMAP, transthyretin and SAA, and the proportions of peripheral blood mononuclear sub-sets, CD8(+) cells, CD4(+) cells, CD11R1(+) cells, MHC DQ(+) cells, and monocytes. There were correlations between both plasma levels of Pig-MAP and the proportion of monocytes (r=0.55; p<0.05) and plasma levels of transthyretin and the proportion of MHC DQ(+) cells (r=0.40; p<0.01). Breed and sex influenced plasma levels of Pig-MAP but not plasma levels of transthyretin. Overall, these results suggest closer links between the mechanisms that regulate the release haptoglobin, Pig-MAP and monocytes compared to those that regulate the release of AGP, SAA and transthyretin.  相似文献

Present acid forming emissions to the atmosphere have the potential to alter significantly the chemistry of rain, snow, and surface water of weakly buffered lakes in the Upper Midwest. Average precipitation pH from field measurements during 1979–1983 declined from west to east from 4.8, 4.6, and 4.3 along a cross-section of sites in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan respectively where 990 lake and stream sampling sites were studied. Measurements of weakly buffered lakes show a parallel decline in lake water pH with the lowest values measured, 5.1, 4.6 and 4.4, respectively in the same regions. Correspondingly, the percentage of lakes sampled with little or no acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) was found to increase from 0 to 4 and 13%, respectively. The geographic patterns in ionic composition of airborne acids and bases, and the resultant surface water concentrations are compared. The acid forming capacity (AFC) from airborne inputs is calculated using mass balance and in-lake processes. Stoichiometric acid-base reactions are used to balance the observed chemical differences between airborne inputs and surface water composition considering nitrification, denitrification, other oxidation-reduction reactions, and the evaporation concentration process. Microbial activity in surface water can result in a net decrease in ionic strength from the conversion of most of the ammonium and nitrate to neutral compounds and biomass, but only a partial reduction of about 20% of the sulfate inputs to weakly buffered lakes. The resulting AFC of airborne inputs are calculated to range from 30 to 60, 50 to 90, and 80 to 130 μeq H+L-l, respectively, in northeastern Minnesota-Ontario, northcentral Wisconsin and northern Michigan-Ontario. The differences in AFC of airborne inputs from west to east, and differences in in-lake processes explain the observed acidity of weakly buffered lakes across the region.  相似文献

While gravity fingering of water in unsaturated sands has been demonstrated and studied under constrained laboratory conditions, its significance under field conditions in the vadose zone is still under debate. We review current understanding of the gravity fingering process as developed through linear stability analysis and laboratory experiments. With respect to many complicating factors inherent in the field, this understanding is deficient in determining the field conditions where gravity fingering can be expected and the behavior of the field-scale fingering process when it occurs. This deficiency is exemplified in the results we present of a field experiment conducted in a sandy alluvial deposit. While simple extrapolation of current understanding of the process predicted instability, fingers did not occur. To begin to understand the influence of complicating factors inherent in the field, we conducted several laboratory experiments that address three important complicating factors: uniform and non-uniform initial moisture content, media heterogeneity, and the presence of macropores and fractures. These factors can fundamentally alter the gravity fingering process, its scale of expression and, under many field conditions, suppress its occurrence entirely. While the significance of gravity fingering of water in a wettable vadose zone is still inconclusive, gravity fingering will likely play a significant role in water/NAPL (non-aqueous-phase liquid) or water/NAPL/air systems, as occur within the saturated and vadose zones, respectively, at many contaminated industrial sites. Paleomagnetic study of antarctic deep-sea cores   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The magnetic inclinations and inten sities of about 650 samples from seven deepsea cores taken in the Antarctic were measured on a spinner magnetometer. This series of measurements provided a magnetic stratigraphy, based on zones of normally or reversally polar ized specimens for each core, which was then correlated with the magnetic stra tigraphy of Cox et al. (1). One core (V16-134) gave a continuous record of the paleomagnetic field back to about 3.5 million years. When selected samples were subject ed to alternatingfield demagnetization, most were found to have an unstable component that was removed by fields of 150 oersteds; all samples from two cores were partially demagnetized in a field of 150 oersteds. The average inclination in these two cores was then in good agreement with the average inclination of the ambient field for the latitude of the core site. It was also found that the intensities of the samples decreased at the points of reversal; this finding is to be expected if, as has been postulated by the dynamo theory, the intensity of the dipole field decreases to zero and builds again with opposite polarity. We believe that the magnetiza tion of the cores results from the pres ence of detrital magnetite, although other magnetic minerals also may be present. Four faunal zones (, X, , and ) have been recognized in these Antarctic cores on the basis of upward sequential disappearance of Radiolaria. The faunal boundaries and reversals consistently have the same relations to one another, indicating that they are both timedependent phenomena. Using previously determined times of reversal, one may date the following events in the cores: 1) Radiolarian faunal boundaries:-X, 2 million years; X-, 0.7 million years; -, 0.4 to 0.5 million years. These dates are in good agreement with ages previously extrapolated from radio metric dates. 2) Initiation of Antarctic diatom ooze deposition, approximately 2.0 mil-lion years ago. 3) First occurrence of ice- rafted detritus, approximately 2.5 million years ago. One can also calculate rates of sedi mentation, which vary in the cores studied from 1.1 to about 8.0 millimeters per 1000 years. Sedimentation rates for the Indian Ocean cores are higher than for the Bellingshausen Sea cores. The near coincidence of faunal changes and reversals in the cores suggests but does not prove a causal relation. We conclude from this study that paleomagnetic stratigraphy is a unique method for correlating and dating deep sea cores, and that future work with such cores may provide a complete or nearly complete record of the history of the earth's magnetic field beyond 4 million years.  相似文献

The Australasian and Ivory Coast deep-sea microtektites have fission track ages of 0.71 and 1.09 million years, respectively. These ages are in good agreement with the ages of deposition of the microtektites determined from paleomagnetic data. Both the fission track ages and ages of deposition of the microtektites agree with the potassium/ argon and fission track ages of tektites from the respective tektite strewn fields.  相似文献
