Effect of mate selection on fuzzy selective mating criteria in closed dairy multiple ovulation and embryo transfer nucleus programs

In order to control rates of response and inbreeding, mate selection using fuzzy selective mating criteria (FMC) was investigated in adult multiple ovulation and embryo transfer nucleus schemes for dairy cattle. Stochastic simulation was used to model the closed nucleus scheme. This mate selection was examined in four alternative mating and male selection schemes: (i) a hierarchical scheme; (ii) a hierarchical sibship scheme (two males per sibship); (iii) a factorial scheme (two sires per dam); and (iv) a factorial sibship scheme (two males per sibship and two sires per dam). Genetic response and inbreeding rate tended to be reduced by increasing the trade-off parameter of FMC between the expected breeding value and inbreeding of progeny. Inbreeding rates in all schemes were reduced by reducing the variance of family size through selection and the average coancestry of mating pairs through mate allocation.     

A case of canine multiple inflammatory colorectal polyps treated by endoscopic polypectomy and argon plasma coagulation

Endoscopic polypectomy and argon plasma coagulation (APC) were performed in a refractory case of inflammatory colorectal polyps in a 7-year-old male Miniature Dachshund. Colonoscopic examination revealed a large sessile polyp and multiple diffuse small polyps, localized to the descending colon and rectum. The case showed a poor therapeutic response to prednisolone and cyclosporine. Under anesthesia, piecemeal resections were performed by polypectomy. APC was carried out to cauterize the polyp remnants. After treatment, reduction of the lesions and the improvement in clinical signs were observed, without recurrence of lesions for at least 10 months. Endoscopic treatment by polypectomy and APC is suggested to be a therapeutic option for refractory cases of inflammatory colorectal polyps in dogs.     

Concentrations of toxic metals and essential minerals in the mane hair of healthy racing horses and their relation to age

Concentrations of trace elements (As, Al, Pb, Cd, Hg, Se, Si, P, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr, Ni and Mn) in the mane hair obtained from 9 female and 15 male healthy racing Thoroughbred horses aged 2-5 years were analyzed by the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) method. No significant differences between the female and male horses were observed in the mean concentrations of those minerals. Significantly positive correlations with age were observed in Cd (r=0.546, p<0.01) and Mo (r=0.733, p<0.001). Significantly negative correlations with age were observed in Hg (r= -0.726, p<0.001), Mn (r= -0.450, p<0.05) and Fe (r=-0.642, p<0.01). This reference range of trace elements in the mane hair of racing horses should be used to assess disease and the nutritional status in equine practice.     

Intrapancreatic accessory spleen mimicking pancreatic insulinoma with intrapancreatic metastasis in a cat

An 11-year-old neutered male Domestic Shorthair cat presented with a 3-month history of hypoglycemia, two episodes of seizure, and intermittent tick-like signs. Serum biochemistry revealed severe hypoglycemia associated with high insulin concentrations. Dynamic abdominal computed tomography (CT) indicated two pancreatic masses, which were enhanced most during the late arterial phase but had different degrees and variations of attenuation. Partial pancreatectomy was performed. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed that one mass was an insulinoma and the other was an ectopic splenic tissue, consistent with the differences in imaging findings. When an intrapancreatic lesion with hyper-attenuation on dynamic abdominal CT is detected, not only insulinoma or metastasis of malignancies but also intrapancreatic accessory spleen (IPAS) should be considered as differential diagnoses.     

Effects of sealed pressing and ozonization on properties of styrene-butadiene rubber and polyethylene glycol adhesive bonded board produced by two-stage pressing

Boards were produced by using SP adhesive, which contains styrene-butadiene rubber and polyethylene glycol as major constituents. The use of polyethylene in place of clay, which is also a generally used constituent of SP adhesive, was confirmed to improve board properties. In general, the properties of boards are poorer when produced by two-stage pressing, in which mats are first processed by temporary adhesion and then processed into boards by permanent adhesion; however, the properties of boards produced by two-stage pressing were improved when polyethylene was added to the SP adhesive. In addition, internal bond strength and thickness swelling was greatly improved when boards were produced from ozonized wood and by sealed pressing. Thus, the properties impaired by two-stage pressing were improved by ozonization and sealed pressing.     

The smell and odorous components of dried shiitake mushroom, Lentinula edodes V: changes in lenthionine and lentinic acid contents during the drying process

This study on dried shiitake mushroom [Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler] focuses on the behavior of the aromatic lenthionine compound and its precursor, lentinic acid, during the drying process. Only a small amount of lenthionine was present after the drying process, regardless of the drying temperature or time; however, the amount increased during the rehydration process using pH 8.0 buffer. The lenthionine content after incubation in the buffer was correlated with the lentinic acid content in the dried shiitake mushroom. The lentinic acid content increased signifi cantly during the drying process at 40°C up to 4 h. The results show that the characteristic smell of dried shiitake mushroom was weak after drying, and that rehydration in a mild alkaline solution was necessary to increase the smell. The lentinic acid content of dried shiitake could serve as an indicator of the smell produced by rehydration and would be useful in screening to select odor-rich strains. Moderate heating likely caused the increase in lentinic acid content, which might be related to a reaction to heat.     

A retrospective study of inflammatory colorectal polyps in miniature dachshunds

Medical records of dogs with colorectal polyps were retrospectively reviewed, and clinical presentation of inflammatory colorectal polyps in miniature dachshunds was evaluated. Of 33 dogs found to have colorectal polyps, miniature dachshunds were markedly over-represented with 16 dogs (48%), of which 12 (75%) were found to have inflammatory polyps. Multiple polyps localized between the rectum and the descending colon was the most common finding in miniature dachshunds with inflammatory polyps. Twenty dogs (80%) out of 25 miniature dachshunds with inflammatory colorectal polyps responded to immunosuppressive therapy using prednisolone and cyclosporine. The results of this study indicate that miniature dachshunds are predisposed to develop inflammatory colorectal multiple polyps, for which immunosuppressive therapy may be a treatment option.
