A prospective cohort study was undertaken in a commercial swine herd to determine the relationship between weight gain and the occurrence of enzootic pneumonia (EP). Estimates of the association between EP and weight gain were obtained from multiple linear regression models, using coughing episodes or slaughter checks as indicators of EP status. Models were estimated for pigs in 2 different age groups: roasters (n = 1084, sold at 32 to 50 kg) and market hogs (n = 1162, sold at 100 to 110 kg). The relationship between presence of lung lesions at slaughter and previous coughing episodes was also investigated. Throughout the study period, clinical evaluations were performed weekly, and coughing episodes recorded for each pig. Lungs were inspected at slaughter, and scores were expressed as the percentage of the lung with gross pneumonic lesions. Coughing and lung scores were significantly correlated, after adjusting for other covariates (R = 0.32 and 0.59, respectively, for market hogs and roasters). However, the agreement beyond chance between coughing history and lung lesions at slaughter was poor among both roasters and market hogs (kappa = 0.17 and 0.07, respectively). Although very specific, weekly assessment of coughing was not a sensitive indicator of lung lesions at slaughter. A condition characterised by the early onset of vestibular deficit and hearing loss was investigated in the dobermann breed of dog. Affected pups showed behavioural signs of head tilt, circling and ataxia and there was a total absence of vestibular response to rotation or caloric stimulation. Severe deafness, as assessed by brainstem auditory evoked response testing, was present by three weeks of age in all affected animals. The inner ears showed a progressive neuroepithelial type of cochlear degeneration with loss of the auditory sensory cells. In the vestibular system, however, there was no equivalent sensory cell loss and the only abnormal feature was the absence or abnormality of the otoconia in some of the affected animals. Pedigree analysis suggested that the condition was inherited as an autosomal recessive trait.  相似文献

Ultrastructural features of Langerhans cells (LCs) of equine "Kasen" were studied. Electron microscopic observation revealed that LCs were dendritic and had irregular nuclear membranes. A number of Birbeck granules (Bgs) of various types were observed in the cytoplasm of LCs. In LCs in the upper stratum spinous, many Bgs were observed (Type 2 LC). LCs in the epidermo-dermal junction (EDJ) had a few Bgs, vesicles (multivesicular bodies) and highly electron-dense granular endosomes in the cytoplasm (Type 3 LC). Inactive LCs were also observed between the keratinocytes (Type 1 LC). Various types of LCs observed in the skin lesions of equine "Kasen" were interpreted as representing those that recognize, intake and process antigens.  相似文献

The goal in the therapeutic use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in musculoskeletal disease is to harness the regenerative nature of these cells focussing on their potential to grow new tissues and organs to replace damaged or diseased tissue. Laboratory isolation of MSCs is now well established and has recently been demonstrated for equine MSCs. Stem cell science has attracted considerable interest in both the scientific and clinical communities because of its potential to regenerate tissues. Research into the use of MSCs in tissue regeneration in general reflects human medical needs, however, the nature, prevalence and prognosis of superficial digital flexor tendonitis has put equine veterinary science at the forefront of tendon regeneration research. Much has been investigated and learnt but it must be appreciated that in spite of this, the field is still relatively young and both communities must prepare themselves for considerable time and effort to develop the technology into a highly efficient treatments. The promise of functional tissue engineering to replace old parts with new fully justifies the interest. At present, however, it is important to balance the understanding of our current limitations with a desire to progress the technology.  相似文献
