Ambient UV radiation is recognised as an important environmental factor in the regulation of plant growth and development, and selenium (Se) as a beneficial nutrient that can increase plant tolerance to different environmental constraints. The effects on hybrid buckwheat plants of full (+UV) and reduced (?UV) ambient UV radiation without (?Se) and with (+Se) foliar Se treatment (10?mg?L?1 sodium selenate) provided the four conditions of Se?UV–, Se–+UV, +Se?UV and +Se+UV. Plant morphological, biochemical and physiological properties were examined, along with leaf elemental composition and content, efficiency of Se enrichment, and production parameters. Leaf anatomical parameters under all conditions were mainly affected by UV radiation, and less so by Se. +Se+UV plants showed a trade-off between primary and secondary metabolism, which resulted in high levels of protective substances (e.g. anthocyanins, UV absorbing compounds), and low levels of photosynthetic pigments. All +UV plants were significantly shorter in comparison to those under the reduced ?UV, while biomass production was highest for ?Se+UV plants and lowest for +Se+UV plants. +Se plants accumulated ~20-fold greater Se content compared to ?Se plants, and full ambient UV radiation partly reduced this effect. +UV plants showed increased phosphorus content in leaves, independent of Se status, while +Se plants showed increased K content. Si content was increased by Se treatment and decreased by the full UV exposure. Se treatment and the ambient UV radiation, separately have positive effects on growth and production of this hybrid buckwheat, while the combination of the Se treatment and ambient UV resulted in lower yields. However, under these conditions (+Se+UV), the buckwheat plants established good protection against the different environmental constraints that are becoming more and more frequent due to changes to our climate.  相似文献

The sizes of both seed dispersers and seeds are traits that are likely to interact to influence seed fate in many synzoochoric plant species. Here, we examined whether members of a granivorous rodent community consisting of species of different body size vary in their effectiveness as seed dispersers, and how this relationship may be altered by seed size. We marked northern red oak (Quercus rubra) acorns with plastic tags and placed them in size‐selective rodent exclosures. The exclosures allowed differential access of rodent groups based on different body size: (i) small (e.g. Peromyscus spp.); (ii) small and medium (e.g. Tamias striatus); and (iii) small, medium and large (e.g. Sciurus carolinensis) species of rodents. Acorn removal did not differ among exclosure types, but more seeds were missing when removed by small rodents, probably because of larderhoarding. The treatments did not influence the relative frequency of acorn consumption. However, small rodents cached considerably fewer and partially ate more acorns than the other 2 groups. The mean dispersal distance was the longest for cages with medium openings, intermediate for cages with large openings and the shortest for cages with small openings. Acorn mass positively affected the probability of caching and this relationship was unaffected by exclosure type. In conclusion, granivorous rodents of different body sizes strongly differed in their interactions with acorns, with small rodents acting primarily as acorn predators and medium and large species contributing significantly more to dispersal of red oaks.  相似文献

In vitro techniques may provide a suitable tool for effective propagation and conservation of plant species representing various ecological niches. The elaboration of such protocols is also prerequisite for selection of heavy-metal-tolerant plant material that could be afterwards used for restoration or remediation of polluted sites. In this study, culture protocol for Gypsophila fastigiata propagation was developed. The highest multiplication coefficient, which reached 6.5, and the best growth parameters were obtained on modified MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L?1 2iP and 0.2 mg L?1 IAA. The obtained cultures were treated with different concentrations of lead nitrate (0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mM Pb(NO3)2) or cadmium chloride (0.5, 2.5, and 5.0 μM CdCl2). The growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, and phenolic compound content were examined in order to evaluate whether tested metal salts can have an adverse impact on studied culture. It was ascertained that Pb ions induced growth disturbances and contributed to shoot wither. On the contrary, the proliferative shoot cultures were established on media containing Cd ions and the multiplication coefficients and shoot length increased on all media enriched with CdCl2. Chlorophylls and carotenoid contents were negatively affected by application of 5.0 μM of cadmium; nevertheless, in shoots treated with 2.5 μM CdCl2, increased accumulation of photosynthetic pigments occurred and their amount was similar to untreated culture. Adaptation to Cd was associated with stimulation of phenolic compound synthesis. Hence, we have reported on unambiguous positive result of in vitro selection procedure to obtain vigorous shoot culture tolerant to cadmium.  相似文献

The use of plants and natural processes for wastewater treatment is an issue that arouses interest among technologists and scientists around the world. The aim of the article was to analyze the influence of the air temperature and insolation on the removal of nitrate nitrogen from the wastewater treated in the hydroponic system, under greenhouse conditions. Samples of sewage for its quality tests were taken from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) located in the southwestern part of Poland. Data regarding daily sunshine duration and average daily air temperature values in selected periods of 2013–2016 come from a meteorological station located 30 km from WWTP. The conducted research and analyses of the results clearly indicate that under moderate climate conditions, the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth’s surface is insufficient to ensure the year-round, effective wastewater treatment process in the hydroponic system. In the case of air temperature, no correlation was found between the tested parameters, which indicates the lack of temperature influence on the efficiency of NO3 removal from the wastewater by macrophytes growing in the lagoon.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the changes in suspension particle size identified in biologically treated wastewater, which was then treated in hydroponic system with use of engineering lighting by the light-emitting diodes (LED). The study was subjected to wastewater purified under laboratory conditions, in a hydroponic system using the effect of macrophytes Pistia stratiotes and growing algae. Measurement of particle size was made using a laser granulometer. Analysis of the results showed that the additional lighting of the hydroponic system with LED can significantly influence the ability of the suspension particles to agglomerate and, consequently, determine their sedimentation properties. In hydroponic system supported by additional lighting, more particles were observed with equivalent diameter D(3.2) smaller than 10 μm than those in the tank without additional lighting, indicating a higher reactivity of the particles. Determining the size of equivalent diameters D(4.3) allowed us to observe that in hydroponic system, particles of relatively small size predominate, which negatively affects the sedimentation process of the suspensions. Determination of particle size of suspensions consisting mainly of algae and the dynamics of their changes are the basis for specification of an effective method of removing particles from the system to protect the receiver from excessive suspension concentrations.  相似文献

Oxidative stress plays an important role as a mediator of damage produced by fructose metabolism. This work was designed to investigate the effect of diet supplemented with quinoa seeds on oxidative stress in plasma, heart, kidney, liver, spleen, lung, testis and pancreas of fructose administered rats. Fructose administration (310 g/kg fodder for 5 weeks) caused oxidative stress that was manifested by the increase in plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) (p<0.05), and by the non-significant changes in the enzymatic antioxidant potential in plasma and most of tissues. Co-administration of quinoa seeds (310 g/kg fodder) maintained normal activities of some enzymes. It also influenced the oxidative stress as was evidenced by decreasing MDA in plasma, and decreasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes (erythrocyte superoxide dismutase - eSOD, catalase -CAT, plasma glutathione peroxidase - pGPX). These findings demonstrate that quinoa seeds can act as a moderate protective agent against potential of fructose-induced changes in rats by reducing lipid peroxidation and by enhancing the antioxidant capacity of blood (plasma) and heart, kidney, testis, lung and pancreas.  相似文献

Colorado potato beetle (CPB, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is one of the most serious insect pest feeding on wild and cultivated Solanaceae plants. This pest poses a significant threat to potato crops. CPB originated from North America but has become widespread and has adapted in new localizations. Currently, it is reported in many countries worldwide. Endosymbiotic bacteria might have an influence on insect adaptation to new conditions. They are known to play a role in invasiveness of insect hosts and to facilitate colonization of new niches; however, information on endosymbionts of the CPB is very limited. In this study, we screened CPB populations collected from 20 evenly distributed locations in Poland for the presence of Arsenophonus, Cardinium, Wolbachia, and Flavobacterium. We found the presence of Flavobacterium in the studied insects. Little is known about CPB–endosymbionts interactions, thus this study may provide a reference for future studies in this subject.  相似文献

Purpose

The study was conducted to quantify the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) accumulation in urban soils from different functional areas via atmospheric inputs with particulate matter.

Materials and methods

PAH concentration and pattern were measured in the particulate matter of snow depositions, in the upper layers of artificial soils from densely built-up areas and in the undisturbed natural soils (Umbric Retisols) from green park area. Samples were collected in 2011–2013 at 58 sites with different traffic activities located at the territory of the Eastern Administrative Okrug of Moscow. The soil samples and filters with particulate matter were extracted by pressurized liquid extraction using Dionex ASE200. Clean-up analyses were performed on SPE cartridges filled with silica gel. Concentrations of PAHs were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography using an Agilent 1100 System equipped with fluorescent detector.

Results and discussion

Mean values of PAH input with snow particles were 45–57 μg/m2 for recreational and residential zones, and 140–264 μg/m2 for traffic zones. The samples of depositions from different functional areas showed a similar PAH pattern and consisted primarily of 3–4-ring PAHs. Total PAH concentrations in upper layers of artificial soils showed similar mean values of 1.43–2.21 μg/g for all functional zones. The PAH content in soils from the park area was twofold lower than that from the built-up area (0.34–0.63 μg/g), despite equal levels of atmosphere contamination on these territories. The upper layers of natural soils from recreational and traffic zones showed slight differences in PAH content, though PAH input with snow was fivefold higher in the traffic zone. Compared with airborne depositions, soils contained significant amounts of 5–6-ring PAHs.

Conclusions

A high level of soil PAH contamination in urban areas of Moscow, several orders of magnitude higher than the current PAH input to them from the atmosphere, indicates a lack of direct connection of the PAH pool in soils with this source. The high PAH content in the upper layer of constructed soils can be the result of repeated use of materials subjected to a constant technogenic impact for the production of artificial soils.

The influence of the structural features of carrageenan on the functional properties of the films was studied. The carrageenans and chitosan films, as well as three-layer films containing a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) of the two, were prepared. The X-ray diffractograms of carrageenan films reflected its amorphous structure, whereas chitosan and three-layer films were characterized by strong reflection in the regions of 20° and 15° angles, respectively. The SEM of the cross-sectional morphology showed dense packing of the chitosan film, as well as the layer-by-layer structure of different densities for the PEC. Among the tested samples, κ/β-carrageenan and chitosan films showed the highest tensile strength and maximum elongation. Films containing the drug substance echinochrome were obtained. Mucoadhesive properties were assessed as the ability of the films to swell on the mucous tissue and their erosion after contact with the mucosa. All studied films exhibited mucoadhesive properties. All studied films exhibited mucoadhesive properties which depended on the carrageenans structure. Multilayer films are stronger than single-layer carrageenan films due to PEC formation. The resulting puncture strength of the obtained films was comparable to that of commercial samples described in the literature.  相似文献
