In the 1980s, rural settlements in the Northeast of Thailand were farming focused, and strategies of living were structured around the need to secure subsistence in the face of a capricious environment and a weak developmental state. More than half of households in the region lived below the poverty line, and the immediate prospects for ‘development’ were not bright. Drawing on a 25‐year longitudinal study of two villages in Mahasarakham, the paper describes and reflects on how risk and vulnerability have been re‐shaped during a quarter of a century of profound economic and social change. From largely environmental and local, the pattern of risk and opportunity have become increasingly economic and non‐local as external events wash across the shores of rural settlements like Ban Non Tae and Ban Tha Song Korn.  相似文献

Beneficial forms of selenium (Se) and their impact on human health are a global topic of interest in public health. We are studying the genetic potential for Se biofortification of pulse crops to improve human nutrition. Lentils ( Lens culinaris L.) are an important protein and carbohydrate food and are a valuable source of essential dietary components and trace elements. We analyzed the total Se concentration of 19 lentil genotypes grown at eight locations for two years in Saskatchewan, Canada. We observed significant genotypic and environmental variation in total Se concentration in lentils and that total Se concentration in lentils ranged between 425 and 673 microg kg(-1), providing 77-122% of the recommended daily intake in 100 g of dry lentils. Over 70% of the Se was present as selenomethionine (SeMet) with a smaller fraction (<20%) as inorganic Se and very small amounts as selenocysteine (SeCys). We found that soils from the locations where the lentils were grown were rich in Se (37-301 microg kg(-1)) and that lentils grown in Saskatchewan have the potential to provide an excellent natural source of this essential element. Our analyses gave us a preliminary understanding of the genetic basis of Se uptake in lentil and indicated that any potential strategy for micronutrient biofortification in lentil will require choice of field locations that minimize the spatial variability of soil Se content.  相似文献

Hierarchical nanostructures of lead sulfide nanowires resembling pine trees were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Structural characterization revealed a screwlike dislocation in the nanowire trunks with helically rotating epitaxial branch nanowires. It is suggested that the screw component of an axial dislocation provides the self-perpetuating steps to enable one-dimensional crystal growth, in contrast to mechanisms that require metal catalysts. The rotating trunks and branches are the consequence of the Eshelby twist of screw dislocations with a dislocation Burgers vector along the 110 directions having an estimated magnitude of 6 +/- 2 angstroms for the screw component. The results confirm the Eshelby theory of dislocations, and the proposed nanowire growth mechanism could be general to many materials.  相似文献

Summary Resistance to Leptosphaeria maculans was assessed in Brassica napus, B. juncea, B. carinata, B. nigra and progeny issuing from an interspecific cross B. napus × B. juncea, using a cotyledon-inoculation test. In these individual plants, brassilexin accumulation was determined following an abiotic, non-specific, elicitation. All the tested B. napus cultivars were highly susceptible to the parasite and weakly accumulated brassilexin. In contrast, B. juncea, B. carinata, and B. nigra usually displayed a hypersensitive response to the inoculation and accumulated more brassilexin than B. napus. The same correlation between resistance to L. maculans and phytoalexin accumulation was observed in the interspecific hybrid progeny. The cotyledon-inoculation test allowed the discrimination of plants displaying a hypersensitive response to the inoculation from those highly sensitive to the parasite, but intermediate disease severity classes were not usually representative of resistance or susceptibility. Rock fragments (RFs) at the soil surface have great effects on the intensity of various hydrologic and geomorphic processes. However, little information is available on the spatial distribution of rock fragments (RF) in the dolines, which may be of importance in understanding overland flow and subsequent recharge in limestone karst landscapes. This study analysed spatial variability of RF cover and size in different topographic positions (top, upper, middle and lower position) in three dolines in Sierra de Gádor (Almería province, south-east Spain). The results indicated that cover percentage of small RFs (5–20 mm) increased but large RF cover (250–600 mm and > 600 mm) decreased from the upper position to the lower position of the dolines. Small RFs were usually resting on the soil surface while most large RFs tended to be partly embedded in the soil surface. Total RF cover and D50 (median diameter) of the surface RFs greater than 5 mm tended to increase with slope gradient.  相似文献

Results are presented of a 1994 postal survey of holdings of local onion (Allium cepa L.) germplasm by institutions in West Africa. Data obtained from respondents included the number of accessions of onion or shallot held and the conditions in which onion seed was stored. Twenty-four replies were received and eighteen sites where collections were held were identified. The numbers of local A. cepa accessions in local collections varied in number from 38 down to nil, but many local collections were of less than five accessions. The largest number of national onion accessions was held at CERRA, Maradi, in Niger (16), and the largest regional collection was at the Station de Farako-bâ, Burkina Faso (38). Two sites held substantial shallot collections: CRA Bareng in Guinée and IDESSA, Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire. Conditions under which onion seed was stored varied from low temperature, controlled storage in moisture-proof packs with desiccants, to storage in plastic envelopes under ambient laboratory conditions.  相似文献

The precision parameters of the method-performance (collaborative) studies published in the AOAC Journal from 1915 through 1990 for pesticide formulations have been recalculated on a uniform basis by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry 1987 protocol. About 93% of the 953 accepted assays, which are predominantly gravimetric (G), volumetric (V), and gas (GC) and liquid (LC) chromatographic methods, exhibit relative standard deviations among laboratories (RSDR) that are generally less than 2 times the values predicted from the Horwitz equation: RSDR (%) = 2 exp (1-0.5 log C), where C is the concentration expressed as a decimal fraction. UV, VIS, and IR spectrophotometric (S) methods are somewhat poorer, with about 80% of the reported RSDR values less than twice the predicted RSDR value. The precision parameters of pesticide formulations analyzed by the older methods (G, V, GC) are equivalent to those previously found for drug preparations in the same concentration range; the precision parameters of pesticide formulations analyzed by LC and S are somewhat poorer. Overall, however, the precision parameters of pesticide formulations are generally independent of analyte, method, and matrix, and are primarily a function of concentration. The method-acceptability decisions of the AOAC for pesticide formulations during the past 75 years can be approximated retrospectively by using a criterion for RSDR that is less than 2 times the RSDR calculated from the Horwitz equation.  相似文献

Resistance to ascochyta blight of lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus),caused by the fungus Ascochyta lentis, is determined by a single recessive gene, ral 2, in the lentil cultivar Indian head. Sixty F2 individuals from a cross between Eston (susceptible) and Indian head (resistant) lentil were analyzed for the presence of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers linked to the ral 2gene, using bulked segregant analysis (BSA). Out of 800 decanucleotide primers screened, two produced polymorphic markers that co-segregated with the resistance locus. These two RAPD markers, UBC2271290and OPD-10870, flanked and were linked in repulsion phase to the gene ral 2 at 12 cm and 16 cm, respectively. The RAPD fragments were converted to SCAR markers. The SCAR marker developed from UBC2271290 could not detect any polymorphism between the two parents or in the F2. The SCAR marker developed from OPD-10870 retained its polymorphism. The polymorphic RAPD marker UBC2271290 and the SCAR marker developed from OPD-10870 can be used together in a marker assisted selection program for ascochyta blight resistance in lentil.
