Water availability and salt excess are limiting factors in Mexican mixed pine-oak forest. In order to characterise the acclimatation
of native species to these stresses, leaf water (Ψw) and osmotic potentials (Ψs) of Juniperus flaccida, Pinus pseudostrobus and Quercus canbyi were measured under natural drought and non-drought conditions under two different aspects in the Sierra Madre Oriental.
Factorial ANOVA revealed significant differences in Ψw and Ψs between two aspects, species and sampling dates. In general, all species showed high predawn and low midday values that declined
progressively with increasing drought and soil–water loss. Seasonal and diurnal fluctuation of Ψw and Ψs were higher for J. flaccida and Q. canbyi than for P. pseudostrobus. Leaf Ψw and Ψs were mainly correlated with soil water content, while Ψs of P. pseudostrobus were hardly correlated with environmental variables. Thus, species have different strategies to withstand drought.
P. pseudostrobus was identified as a species with isohydric water status regulation, while J. flaccida and Q. canbyi presented water potential patterns typical for anisohydric species. The type of water status regulation may be a critical
factor for plant survival and mortality in the context of climate change. Nevertheless, for precise conclusions about the

The performance (survival and growth) of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Mirb. Franco.) seedlings planted in minimally disturbed, scalped, and bedded soils, both with and without herbicidal control of weeds, were compared. Douglas-fir growing for 3 years in bedded soils treated with herbicide were heavier, taller, and had deeper root systems than trees growing in other preparations. Scalping did not improve seedling performance when compared to minimally disturbed soils. Soils rich in organic matter benefited tree growth. A quantitative study of the amount of air transported between the boundary layer and the free atmosphere is important for understanding air quality and upper tropospheric ozone, which is a greenhouse gas. Frontal systems are known to be an effective mechanism for the vertical transport of pollutants. Numerical experiments have been performed with a simple two-dimensional front model to simulate vertical transport of trace gases within developing cold fronts. Three different trace gases experiments have been done numerically according to the different initial fields of trace gases such as aerosol, ozone and H2O2. Trace gas field tilts to the east while the front tilts to the west. Aerosol simulation shows that pollutants can be transported out of the boundary to altitudes of about 10 km. The stratospheric ozone is brought downwards in a tropopause fold behind of the frontal surface. The meridional gradient in trace gas (H2O2) can cause a complicate structure in the trace field by the meridional advection. 相似文献

Deamidation of amide residues, Asn and Gln, in collagen occurs during the manufacture of B-type gelatin and could affect the performance of B-type gelatins as it may affect the refolding of triple-helical junctional domains that are formed during gelation. Host-guest peptides of the form acetyl-(Gly-Pro-Hyp)3-Gly-Xaa-Yaa-(Gly-Pro-Hyp)4-Gly-Gly-amide, where the X- and Y-positions of the guest peptide are varied, have been used to examine the effect of changing Asn to Asp and Gln to Glu on triple-helix stability. This paper reports the stability of host-guest peptides containing the guest triplets Gly-Ala-Asn, Gly-Asn-Ala, Gly-Asn-Lys, Gly-Gln-Ala, Gly-Glu-Glu, and Gly-Leu-Glu. In combination with previous data, these now provide 15 pairs of peptides in which the effect of deamidation can be compared. These comparisons show that the deamidation of Asn to Asp, regardless of whether it occurred in either the X- or Y-position, always gave a stabilizing effect; deamidation of Gln in the X-position also led to an increase in stability. In contrast, deamidation of Gln in the Y-position was quite distinct, leading to destabilization. The higher observed frequency of Gln in the Y-position compared with other amides may account for the slight destabilization of collagen following deamidation. 相似文献

The derivatization followed by reductive cleavage (DFRC) method cleaves alpha- and beta-ethers in lignins but leaves lignin gamma-esters intact. When applied to grasses, which contain p-coumarate esters on their lignins, esterified monolignol derivatives are released. Saturation of the p-coumarate double bond occurs during DFRC, so the released products are 4-acetoxycinnamyl 4-acetoxyphenylpropionates. Synthesis of the esters allowed determination of response factors for the released products. Maize and bamboo lignins released 221 and 38 micromol/g of p-coumarate-derived esters. The sinapyl ester was much more abundant than the coniferyl one. The bamboo and maize lignin S/G ratios in the conjugates were 12 and 38 times greater than those of the normal monomers released by DFRC, evidence of a strong selectivity for acylation of syringyl units. Of three possible biochemical mechanisms for incorporating p-coumarates into lignin, evidence is mounting that the process involves incorporation of preacylated monolignols into the normal lignification process. 相似文献

An obscure sesquiterpene, rotundone, has been identified as a hitherto unrecognized important aroma impact compound with a strong spicy, peppercorn aroma. Excellent correlations were observed between the concentration of rotundone and the mean 'black pepper' aroma intensity rated by sensory panels for both grape and wine samples, indicating that rotundone is a major contributor to peppery characters in Shiraz grapes and wine (and to a lesser extent in wine of other varieties). Approximately 80% of a sensory panel were very sensitive to the aroma of rotundone (aroma detection threshold levels of 16 ng/L in red wine and 8 ng/L in water). Above these concentrations, these panelists described the spiked samples as more 'peppery' and 'spicy'. However, approximately 20% of panelists could not detect this compound at the highest concentration tested (4000 ng/L), even in water. Thus, the sensory experiences of two consumers enjoying the same glass of Shiraz wine might be very different. Rotundone was found in much higher amounts in other common herbs and spices, especially black and white peppercorns, where it was present at approximately 10000 times the level found in very 'peppery' wine. Rotundone is the first compound found in black or white peppercorns that has a distinctive peppery aroma. Rotundone has an odor activity value in pepper on the order of 50000-250000 and is, on this criterion, by far the most powerful aroma compound yet found in that most important spice. 相似文献
