Performance of three exotic species of Leucaena (L. diversifolia, L. shannonii and L. leucocephala) and one local selection of L. leucocephala was evaluated on sodic soil sites (pH 8.6–10.5) in order to select promising species for biomass production and reclamation of these soils. There were significant differences among three species with respect to their field survival (47.7–95.5 per cent), growth in terms of stem volume (40.8–118.6 m3 ha−1) and biomass production (24–70 Mg ha−1) after eight years of growth. L. leucocephala was rated as the most promising species irrespective of seed source, followed by L. shannonii. L. diversifolia could not perform well on these hostile soils. A definite improvement in physicochemical properties of soil particularly in surface layers (0–5 cm) was observed after eight years of plantations as compared to the same at uncultivated site. The soil pH and sodium content decreased followed by an increase in organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus content. However, efficiency of different species varied greatly to ameliorate these soils depending on quantity and quality of organic matter lying on the floor. L. leucocephala, irrespective of seed origin, showed greater promise for afforestation of sodic soils because of its potential to produce higher biomass per unit area and greater efficiency to ameliorate fertility status of these soils. The study revealed that matching of species to soil conditions is very important for a successful plantation programme and sustainable development of degraded soil sites. Intravenous (IV) levetiracetam (LEV) is available for humans for bridge therapy when the oral route is unavailable. We investigated the safety and pharmacokinetics of LEV administered intramuscularly (IM), IV, and orally to dogs.
Six Hound dogs received 19.5–22.6 mg/kg of LEV IM, IV and orally with a wash-out period in between. All dogs received 500 mg LEV orally and 5 mL of 100 mg/mL LEV IM. Three dogs received 500 mg of LEV IV and three dogs received 250 mg LEV IV with 250 mg given perivascularly to approximate extravasation. Safety was assessed using a pain scale at time of IM administration and histopathological examination 24 h to 5 days after injection.
Intravenous LEV half-life was 180 ± 18 min. Bioavailability of IM LEV was 100%. Mean time to Tmax after IM was 40 ± 16 min. The mean Cmax IM was 30.3 ± 3 μg/mL compared to the C0 of 37 ± 5 μg/mL for IV. Mean inflammation score (0–4 scale) for IM LEV was 0.28 and for saline 0.62. Extravasation did not cause tissue damage.
Parenteral LEV is well tolerated and appears safe following IM and IV injections in dogs. Parenteral LEV should be evaluated for use in dogs with epilepsy.  相似文献

This paper reports on model studies on energy dissipatorswhich were performed with a view towards developing a shorterand more efficient type of stilling basin for circular pipeoutlets at low Froude numbers. The stilling basin models weretested for two pipe outlet diameters. The outlet Froude numberfor testing ranged from 1.70 to 5.50. The studies reported inthis paper expand on the improvement suggested by Goel andVerma (1999). In all, 133 test runs were made on 19 newmodels. Various configurations of stilling basin models withdifferent sizes, shapes and locations of appurtenances andbasin lengths were tested. The use of a wedge-shaped splitterblock, an impact wall, and the use of wedge-shaped blocks asbaffle blocks resulted in efficient energy dissipation inshorter lengths of stilling basin. A non-dimensional numbertermed as scour index has been used to compare theperformances of various stilling basin models. It was foundthat the length of stilling basin could be reducedconsiderably without affecting the performance by choosing asuitable configuration of the stilling basin. Of theconfigurations tested, the stilling basin model M-24 with tworows of wedge-shaped baffle blocks in a basin length of sixtimes the diameter of pipe outlet (6d) performed better incomparison to USBR impact type VI stilling basin.  相似文献

Event-based precipitation samples were collected during the main agricultural season (April-September) over 4 years (2000-2003) at one site in the Choptank River Watershed on the Delmarva Peninsula. The samples were analyzed for 19 agricultural pesticides to determine the contribution of wet deposition as a source of these compounds to the Chesapeake Bay and the factors affecting the temporal trends in deposition. Chlorothalonil was detected most frequently (92% samples) followed by metolachlor (66%) and endosulfans (49%). Although chlorothalonil is the single biggest contributor to pesticide flux (33-46%), pesticide wet deposition is dominated by herbicides (46-61%), with the greatest fluxes occurring during the time of herbicide application on corn and soybeans. The analysis suggests that the extent of wet deposition of herbicides depends on the timing of precipitation relative to herbicide application. The insecticide and fungicide flux was greater in years with above-average rainfall (2001 and 2003), suggesting that for these pesticides deposition flux is dependent on the total amount of rainfall in the agricultural season. The data indicate that the use of chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide which is on the Toxics of Concern list for the Bay, is on the increase. Total pesticide flux ranged from 90 microg/m2 (2001) to 180 microg/m2 (2000). Wet deposition can account for up to 10-20% of the annual loadings of pesticides to the Bay.  相似文献

Buffalo serum caused lysis of unsensitized red blood cells (RBC) of sheep, goat, rabbit and guineapig. There was minimal lysis of cattle RBC, and homologous RBC were resistant. Lysis of sheep and goat RBC was the result of natural antibodies as adsorption with respective RBC and addition of 8 mmol ethylene glycolbistetraacetate (EGTA) in diluent completely abrogated the haemolytic activity. The lysis of guinea-pig and rabbit RBC was only partially decreased by these treatments, indicating the presence of alternate complement pathway (ACP) activity in buffalo serum. The guinea-pig RBC were the most sensitive to lysis, and 50% CH titre units above 40 ml−1 of serum were obtained. The haemolytic activity of buffalo C for unsensitized guinea-pig RBC was reduced from 47 CH50 units to an undetectable level by heating at 50°C for 20 min and at 56°C for 4 min. Similarly, treatment with zymosan also inhibited this haemolytic activity. Maximum activation of buffalo ACP occurred in the presence of 4 mmol Mg2+ in the diluent.

Using standardized conditions, ACP activity was determined in sera of 98 healthy buffaloes of different age groups from 1 month to 12 years. Even young calves less then three months of age showed considerable ACP activity (45.60±1.21 CH50 units ml−1) which increased with age. The peak mean values of 79.79±1.45 CH50 units was recorded in 2 to 4-year-old animals. However, in all the 11 animals above 4 years of age, the haemolytic activity was greatly reduced and was even less than that in 1 to 3-month-old buffalo calves. Two strains of Pseudomonas MRS23 and CRP55b showed antagonistic activity towards the pathogenic fungi Aspergillus sp., Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri, Pythium aphanidermatum and Rhizoctonia solani under culture conditions. Larger growth inhibition zones were obtained on nutrient agar (NA) and King's B media in comparison to potato dextrose agar and pigment production media. Both the strains produced siderophore in agar plates as well as in liquid cultures. Fungal inhibition zones were reduced in size and abolished in iron-supplemented NA medium by Pseudomonas strains MRS23 and CRP55b, respectively, indicating that some other metabolites along with siderophores are involved in growth inhibition of fungi by strain MRS23, whereas CRP55b produced only siderophores. Only Pseudomonas strain MRS23 was found to produce hydrocyanic acid (HCN). Seed bacterization with Pseudomonas strains of two chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars, H8618 and C235, showed root-stunting effects at 5 days, whereas this inhibitory effect was overcome at 10 days of seedling growth in cv. H8618. Coinoculation of chickpea with Pseudomonas strains MRS23 and CRP55b, and Mesorhizobium sp. Cicer strain Ca181 resulted in the formation of 68.2-115.4% more nodules at 80 and 100 days after planting as compared to single inoculation with the Mesorhizobium strain under sterile conditions. The shoot dry weight ratios of coinoculated treatments at different stages of plant growth varied from 1.18 to 1.35 times that of Mesorhizobium-inoculated and 3.25 to 4.06 times those in uninoculated controls. The plant N contents were also increased significantly on coinoculation. Coinoculation effects of HCN-producing strain MRS23 were significantly lower than those of non-HCN-producing strain CRP55b in terms of shoot dry weight and shoot N. The results demonstrated the potential benefits of using rhizosphere bacteria as coinocula in nodule promotion and plant growth in chickpea.  相似文献

Background

Importance of parasites in ecological and evolutionary interactions is being increasingly recognized. However, ecological data on parasites of important host species is still scanty. We analyze the patterns seen in the faecal parasites of tigers in the Tadoba National Park, India, and speculate on the factors and processes shaping the parasite community and the possible implications for tiger ecology.

Results

The prevalence and intensities were high and the parasite community was dominated by indirect life cycle parasites. Across all genera of parasites variance scaled with the square of the mean and there was a significant positive correlation between prevalence and abundance. There was no significant association between different types of parasites.

Conclusions

The 70 samples analyzed formed 14 distinct clusters. If we assume each of the clusters to represent individual tigers that were sampled repeatedly and that resident tigers are more likely to be sampled repeatedly, the presumed transient tigers had significantly greater parasite loads than the presumed resident ones.

Western Indian Himalaya is very rich in biodiversity. Being a cold climatic region, it possesses various psychrotolerant and psychrophilic microorganisms. Psychrotolerant bacterium Dyadobacter sp. was isolated from this region and studied for its plant growth promoting potential against four legumes and finger millet. This bacterium was able to grow at nitrogen (N) deficient medium at both 10°C and 28°C and gave positive nifH amplification that confirms the psychrotolerant and diazotrophic nature of this bacterium. Pot trial-based study showed that this bacterium was able to promote plant growth by fixing atmospheric nitrogen (N2) and making it available to plants. Agronomical parameters, leaf nitrate reductase activity, and total chlorophyll content were recorded at 30, 45, 60, and 90 days after sowing and found to be increased over their respective controls. The 16S rDNA and nifH genes were quantified by q-PCR to study the dynamics of total bacterial and diazotrophic abundance due to inoculation of Dyadobacter sp. in soil. Soil chemical properties related to soil fertility were also studied at different time intervals after sowing. We found positive correlation among soil pH, soil nifH gene abundance, soil nitrate concentration, and plant leaf nitrate reductase activity. PCR-DGGE was performed to study persistence of Dyadobacter sp. in soil after inoculation, which showed good persistence of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Hence, it is concluded that Dyadobacter sp. has potential to promote plant growth by fixing atmospheric N2 and making it available to plant. Further, psychrotolerant nature of this bacterium can be exploited to enhance plant growth in cold climate agriculture due to its ability to fix atmospheric N2 at low temperature.  相似文献

Concentration and distribution of the three immunoglobulins in the sera and tracheal washings of a chicken population was studied. The mean IgM, IgG and IgA concentrations in serum were 1.35, 5.09 and 0.31 mg/ml, respectively. The distribution of IgM and IgG in birds irrespective of age was almost normal whereas that of IgA was skewed. All the three immunoglobulins were present in tracheal washings but the level of IgM was barely detectable. The IgG was predominant in the tracheal washings but higher IgA : IgG ratio compared to that of serum indicated local IgA production in the chicken respiratory tract.  相似文献
