Low phosphorus (LP) limits crop growth and productivity in the majority of arable lands worldwide. Here, we investigated the changes in physiological and biochemical traits of Tibetan wild barleys (Hordeum vulgare L. ssp. spontaneum) XZ99 (LP tolerant), XZ100 (LP sensitive), and cultivated barley ZD9 (moderately LP tolerant) under two phosphorus (P) levels during vegetative stage. These genotypes showed considerable differences in the change of biomass accumulation, root/shoot dry weight ratio, root morphology, organic acid secretion, carbohydrate metabolism, ATPase (Adenosine triphosphatase) activity, P concentration and accumulation under LP in comparison with CK (control) condition. The higher LP tolerance of XZ99 is associated with more developed roots, enhanced sucrose biosynthesis and hydrolysis of carbohydrate metabolism pathway, higher APase (Acid phosphatase) and ATPase activity, and more secretion of citrate and succinate in roots when plants are exposed to LP stress. The results prove the potential of Tibetan wild barley in developing barley cultivars with high tolerance to LP stress and understanding the mechanisms of LP tolerance in plants. 相似文献

Despite the importance of mucilage for soil–plant relations, little is known about the effect of soil drying on mucilage exudation. We introduce a method to collect mucilage from maize growing in wet and dry soils. Mucilage was collected from brace roots. The amount of mucilage exuded did not change with soil water content and transpiration rate. Mucilage exuded in dry soils had a higher degree of hydrophobicity, suggesting that the wetting properties of mucilage change in response to soil drying. 相似文献

Increasing amounts from 2.5 to 45 μg of one synthetic and seven natural humic acids were chromatographed on silica gel thin layers using ammonia 25% and propanol in the ratio 70:30 v/v as mobile phase. The fragments of humic acids produced under the influence of the alkaline mobile phase were separated in three band-shaped chromatographic fractions, whose lengths were transverse to the direction of the mobile phase. Since the fragments were not formed in constant ratios from different quantities of the same humic acid, the length of a fraction could only reflect its content of humic substance, whereas the sum of lengths of the three fractions (F) reflected quantities of the humic acid (x) at starting points. Similar F-x curves were obtained from humic acids extracted from similar origins, even when the locations of the samples, particle weights of the humic acids or the pH values at which they were extracted were different. The mathematical relation between F and x for quantities of humic acids up to 15–20 μg possessed high correlation coefficients and may be thus applied for the estimation of unknown concentrations of humic acids extracted from similar origins. 相似文献

A radish and a grass species were grown in identical substrates either unpolluted or polluted by tungsten (W) at 1, 5, and 10 μg/g levels of watering solutions during 1 month under controlled laboratory conditions. Initially, at 4.1 μg/g, the W content in grass leaves reached 16 μg/g at the highest rate of W supply to the substrate. For radish, the content of W reached 22 and 29 μg/g in the leaves and roots, respectively. The overall W pollution increased significantly the mobility of major elements from substrate to grass leaves, especially at the 5 μg/g pollution level, whereas the W impact on radish leaves resulted in an increase of most contents, only Mn remaining unaffected. The roots from polluted radishes were enriched in Si by 21% and Al by 42% at low pollution, and in Si by 15% at high supply, whereas the uptake of the other elements remained unchanged. It looks like the W pollution at the levels chosen does not impact the transfer of the major and trace elements from roots to leaves of Raphanus sativus. Alternatively, metallic trace elements (Ba, Ni, Cr, Zn, W, Co) of the Raphanus sativus and Chloris gayana leaves outline similar content changes depending on the amount of W pollution. The total rare-earth element contents of the leaves of Raphanus sativus grown in the polluted substrates are lower than those of the leaves from unpolluted substrate. Their normalization in the leaves and roots of Raphanus sativus from the polluted substrates to those of the radish from non-polluted substrate provides flat patterns for both with a positive Eu anomaly for leaves, as for those of the grass and a negative Gd anomaly for roots. ABSTRACT Soil salinity is a major abiotic factor limiting crop production but an amendment with synthetic zeolite may mitigate effects of salinity stress on plants. The objective of the study was to determine the effects of zeolite on soil properties and growth of barley irrigated with diluted seawater. Barley was raised on a sand dune soil treated with calcium type zeolite at the rate of 1 and 5% and irrigated every alternate day with seawater diluted to electrical conductivity (EC) levels of 3 and 16 dS m?1. Irrigation with 16 dS m?1 saline water significantly suppressed plant height by 25%, leaf area by 44% and dry weight by 60%. However, a substantial increase in plant biomass of salt stressed barley was observed in zeolite-amended treatments. The application of zeolite also enhanced water and salt holding capacity of soil. Post-harvest soil analysis showed high concentrations of calcium (Ca2 +), magnesium (Mg2 +), sodium (Na+), and potassium (K+) due to saline water especially in the upper soil layer but concentrations were lower in soils treated with zeolite. Zeolite application at 5% increased Ca2 + concentration in salt stressed plants; concentrations of trace elements were also increased by 19% for iron (Fe2 +) and 10% for manganese (Mn2 +). The overall results indicated that soil amendment with zeolite could effectively ameliorate salinity stress and improve nutrient balance in a sandy soil. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to study the influence of three organic manures, farm yard manure (FYM), poultry manure (PLM), and pigeon manure (PGM), on soil physical and chemical properties on tuber yield of Jerusalem artichoke in a newly reclaimed saline calcareous soil. A field experiment was conducted applying the three manures, alone and/or in different combinations. Soils were investigated at surface (0–30 cm) and subsurface (30–60 cm) layers before and after planting, and analyzed for physical and chemical properties. The results indicated that the application of 31.5 kg ha?1 of PLM+10.5 kg of PGM T7 recorded highest available nitrogen, zinc, copper, and moisture content at the surface layer. The same results were obtained for iron and manganese at both layers. While, applying 21.0 kg ha?1 FYM+21.0 kg ha?1 PLM T10 recorded the best treatment for pH, phosphorus, zinc, copper, moisture content, and saturation percentage at the subsurface layer. Applying 21.0 kg ha?1 PGM + 10.5 kg ha?1 FYM+10.5 kg ha?1 PLM T15 recorded the best treatment for organic matter content and bulk density at surface layer and reduced the electrical conductivity and inulin tuber content at both layers. On the other hand, calcium carbonate and sodium adsorption ratio were reduced in both layers by applying 21.0 kg ha?1 PLM+10.5 kg ha?1 FYM+10.5 kg ha?1 PGM T14. The best treatment for tuber nitrogen content and total yield was obtained with applying 42.0 kg ha?1 PLM T2 only and 31.5 kg ha?1 FYM+10.5 kg ha?1 PLM T4, respectively. 相似文献

Purpose
Ornamentals can beautify the environment and resolve heavy metal pollution at the same time. Thus, the present study aimed at studying the growth and physiological response of Tagetes patula on iron ore tailings.Materials and methods
Pot-culture experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of iron ore tailings both individually as well as in combination with soil (at different proportions) on the growth, pigment production as well as accumulation and translocation of various heavy metals from the tailings.Results and discussion
The results suggested an increase in growth, chlorophyll content, as well as metal accumulation capacity of T. patula with increasing proportion of tailings in the soil. Furthermore, an increase in antioxidant activities in plants grown on tailings as compared to control was observed which suggests plant efficiency to overcome any stress generated due to excess of heavy metals. The order of accumulation of various heavy metals in the plant parts was observed to be Fe?>?Cr?>?Zn?>?Cu?>?Pb?>?Ni?>?Cd. Both bioaccumulation and translocation values were maximum for Fe and minimum for Ni and Cd, respectively.Conclusions
The overall study clearly suggests plant ability to grow well on the tailings and survive excess of heavy metals present in the tailings. Thus, the plant qualifies well as a potential tool for phytostabilization of iron ore tailings and probably a source of income generation from wasteland owing to its multiple commercial values. 相似文献79.

The capabilities of two red (RW) and two white wines (WW) in inhibiting cholesterol oxidation were evaluated using a cholesterol emulsion (CE) system. Each RW or WW was mixed with CE at different (v/v) ratios. Cholesterol oxidation was accelerated by a free radical generator, 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH), at 37 °C. The major oxidation product, 7-ketocholesterol, was monitored to determine cholesterol stability in the CE system. At a ratio of 1:250 (RW/CE), 7-ketocholesterol production was not detected during 72 h of oxidation. At a 1:1000 ratio, the inhibition rate of each RW was maintained at 100% at 24 h but decreased afterward. Both WWs had 100% inhibition rate within 48 h at a ratio of 1:10. Also, the capabilities of catechin and resveratrol solutions (1 mg/mL) in inhibiting cholesterol oxidation were studied. Each of the wine polyphenolics showed a 100% of 7-ketocholesterol inhibition rate in 24 h at a ratio of 1:500 (solution/CE). However, the inhibition rate of resveratrol was lower than that of catechin at 48 or 72 h. The results demonstrated that red wine possesses great anti-cholesterol-oxidation capability, which may contribute to health benefits in preventing cardiovascular diseases. A separation system has been developed to permit the simultaneous analysis of major anthocyanins and stilbenes from berries of Vitis species in <1 h. The system makes use of separation by HPLC and detection by UV-visible absorption and fluorescence, for anthocyanins and stilbenes, respectively, with the two detection systems linked in series. Monitoring the absorption at 520 nm permits ready identification and quantification of major anthocyanins. Chromatograms derived from fluorescence (330 nm excitation/374 nm emission) produce less clear data for the piceids and resveratrols, which are present in much lower amounts; peaks for these compounds can be verified by means of external or internal standards. 相似文献
