The rate of gene flow is greatly affected by the ability of a species to move from one location to another. In Ethiopia the presence of diverse agro-ecological zones, climatic features, rugged mountains and isolated valleys affected the seed-mediated gene flow among regions. Hence, this study was aimed at investigating and detecting presence of any gene barriers and genetic differentiation among regions. Thus, the study was proposed to test whether the high genetic diversity of barley in Ethiopia was due to a reduced gene flow resulting from geographic barriers and/or effects of human activities. A total of 199 barley landraces collected from 10 different geographic regions and altitudes of Ethiopia were analyzed for 15 molecular markers. A barrier analysis was conducted to identify any geographic areas with pronounced genetic discontinuity between the regions that can be interpreted as barriers to gene flow. The result obtained from analysis of molecular variances indicated high genetic variation within regions rather than between regions. Despite high gene flow among regions, we were able to detect genetic discontinuity due to landscape and human mobility for certain barley growing areas. Hence, it was postulated that these barriers have to be considered in genetic resource sampling strategies.  相似文献

Camels artificially infected with a field stock of Trypanosoma evansi isolated from a camel near Gewane, Ethiopia were cured by treatment with RM110, administered by subcutaneous injection at 0.3 or 0.6 mg/kg body weight. Local reactions were mild and transient. Further evaluation of RM110 is indicated, in particular the determination of minimum curative doses for this and other T. evansi stocks in camels.  相似文献

本文旨在研究埃塞俄比亚中部Angacha地区树篱中的鸟类多样性。采用样线法及样点法调查了五个子地点的鸟类多样性、丰富度、相似度及对生境的偏好等指标。树篱中鸟类多样性及其对树篱类型的偏好因其植被组成及结构的不同而有所差异。在树篱生境中记录到5个特有鸟种,即卢氏歌 (Cossyfa semirufa)、白颊蕉鹃(Tauraco leucotis)、横斑拟鴷(Lybius undatus)、黑头林鹂(Oriolus monacha)及肉垂鹮(Bostrychia carucullatta)。树篱的稠密度、高度及宽度影响到鸟类的多样性、丰富度及相似度。较密的树篱常常拥有较高的鸟类物种多样性、丰富度和相似性。组成树篱的植物多样性及其鸟类多样性之间呈高度相关,并与生境质量直接相关。树篱中鸟类多样性较高,并且一些鸟类对某些类型的树篱有明显的偏好,这就对当地树篱优先保护与管理提出了要求。  相似文献

Genetic diversity and population structure of Guinea yams and their wild relatives collected from south and south west Ethiopia were assessed using microsatellite markers. The total number of alleles amplified for the 7 loci studied was found to be 60, with an average of 8.6 alleles per locus. The average expected heterozygosity for the entire population was found to be 64 % indicating that Guinea yams and their wild relatives in the study area display a high level of genetic diversity. Using allelic richness as a measure of genetic diversity the wild forms exhibited greater allelic diversity than the cultigens. Contrary to what is expected in vegetatively propagated crops, none of the seven loci studied showed a significant excess of heterozygotes. In all the comparisons made, a low mean FST (but significant) has been observed, indicating that the majority of microsatellite diversity in the populations under study was found within rather than between populations.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of commercial enzyme‐treated soy (ESBM) to replace the use of fish meal (FM) in practical diets for Florida pompano Trachinotus carolinus. The reference diet which has been run in numerous trials for Florida pompano was formulated using 150, 466 and 80 g/kg of FM, soybean meal and corn protein concentrate respectively. In trial 1, test diets were produced by replacing FM with 30.8, 61.4 and 92.1 g/kg of ESBM. In trial 2, test diets were produced by replacing FM with 28.9, 89.8, 120.1 g/kg of ESBM. Triplicate group of fish in trial 1 (mean weight = 13.05 ± 0.34 g) and trial 2 (mean weight = 18.45 ± 0.49 g) was fed these diets to apparent satiety for 8 weeks. Growth performance was affected as the dietary FM was replaced with ESBM. In trial 1, final weight (FW), percentage weight gain and thermal growth coefficient were lower in 6 g/kg of FM compared to 15 g/kg, while feed conversion ratio significantly higher in fish fed the lowest inclusion level of FM (6 g/kg). In trial 2, FW was significantly lower when FM completely replaced by ESBM and no significant differences in other growth parameters. In all trials, no significant differences were observed in terms of crude protein, moisture, fat, crude fibre, dry matter and ash content of the fish. No significant differences in serum levels of total protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, glucose and bile acids were observed in either trial. However, in trial 1, serum cholesterol level was higher in fish fed 150 g/kg FM compared to other dietary treatments. The histomorphological structure of liver and distal intestine was slightly affected by lower inclusion level of FM. Overall, there was a decreasing trend in pompano growth performance as the inclusion of FM decreased. All parameters indicated that ESBM could be used to reduce the inclusion of FM from 150 to 90 g/kg.  相似文献

Maize has been targeted as one of the major crops for provitamin enrichment and delivery because it is an inexpensive and easily available source of food for millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Although tropical-adapted yellow maize contains provitamin-A carotenoids that can be converted into vitamin A in the human body, they represent less than 25% of the total carotenoids in most widely grown and consumed maize cultivars in Africa. Novel genes conditioning high concentration of β-carotene and other carotenoids were then continually introduced from the temperate zone and tropics to boost provitamin A in tropical-adapted maize. Several promising inbred lines developed from backcrosses involving diverse exotic donor lines displayed provitamin A concentrations that match or surpass the current breeding target of 15 μg g?1. Some of these lines attained high provitamin A content by accumulating mainly high β-carotene while others contained high provitamin A by promoting accumulation of high levels of both carotenes and xanthophylls. Several inbred lines with intermediate to high levels of provitamin A have already been used to develop hybrids and synthetics without compromising grain yield and other adaptive traits that are required to profitably cultivate maize by farmers in West and Central Africa.  相似文献

The effect of flat seedbed, traditional ridge and furrow and improved drainage of broad bed and furrow (BBF) on grain and straw yield of durum wheat, chickpea and lentil at several Vertisol sites between 1988—1991 was such that on three crops the BBF system gave the highest grain and straw yields at all locations and seasons. This was followed by traditional ridge and furrow system and the least yield was obtained from flat seed beds. The extent of drainage influence on yield was dependent on rainfall quantity, location (clay content) and crop species. The advantages of the BBF technology in improving drainage and increasing crop yield are discussed in their contexts of better cropping systems.  相似文献

Diversity of trees and shrubs in agricultural systems contributes to provision of wood and non-wood products, and protects the environment, thereby, enhancing socioeconomic and ecological sustainability of the systems. This study characterizes the diversity, density and composition of trees in the agroforestry homegardens of Sidama Zone, Southern Ethiopia, and analyses physical and socioeconomic factors influencing diversity and composition of trees in the systems. A total of 144 homegardens were surveyed from 12 sites. In total, 120 species of trees and shrubs were recorded of which, 74.2 % were native to the area. The mean number of tree species per farm was 21. Density of trees varied between sites with mean values ranging from 86 to 1,082, and the overall average was 475 trees ha?1. Four different crop-based enset (Enset ventricosum (Welw.) Cheesman)-coffee homegarden types were recognized and they differed not only in the composition of major crops but also in the diversity, density and composition of trees. The composition, diversity and density of trees is influenced by physical and socioeconomic factors. The major physical factors were geographical distance between sites and differences in altitude of farms. The most important socioeconomic factors were farm size and access to roads. Tree species richness and density increased with farm size. Increased road access facilitated marketing opportunities to agricultural products including trees, and lead to a decline in the basic components of the system, enset, coffee and trees. In the road-access sites, the native trees have also been largely replaced with fast growing exotic species, mainly eucalypts. The decrease in diversity of trees and perennial components of the system, and its gradual replacement with new cash and annual food crops could jeopardize the integrity and complexity of the system, which has been responsible for its sustenance.  相似文献
