Solution properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Naked metallic and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were dissolved in organic solutions by derivatization with thionychloride and octadecylamine. Both ionic (charge transfer) and covalent solution-phase chemistry with concomitant modulation of the SWNT band structure were demonstrated. Solution-phase near-infrared spectroscopy was used to study the effects of chemical modifications on the band gaps of the SWNTs. Reaction of soluble SWNTs with dichlorocarbene led to functionalization of the nanotube walls.  相似文献

Detailed studies of elementary chemical processes on well-characterized single crystal surfaces have contributed substantially to the understanding of heterogeneous catalysis. Insight into the structure of surface alloys combined with an understanding of the relation between the surface composition and reactivity is shown to lead directly to new ideas for catalyst design. The feasibility of such an approach is illustrated by the synthesis, characterization, and tests of a high-surface area gold-nickel catalyst for steam reforming.  相似文献

Sediment traps collected significant quantities of waste solids beneath marine fish cages at a fish farm site in Greece. Diver observation and the absence of dissolved hydrogen sulphide in the water overlying sediments revealed low benthic impacts despite the very low current speeds measured. An acoustic bottom discrimination system, ground-truthed by conventional remote photography, further confirmed the apparently low benthic impact at this site. These results may be explained partly by the large number of fish present around the cages feeding on farm wastes.  相似文献

Enrofloxacin was given to broiler chickens, 3 groups of 6 birds each, at a dose of 5 mg/kg. Routes of administration were intravenous (i.v.), intramuscular (i.m.) and oral (p.o.) and blood samples were collected from the jugular vein for determination of serum drug levels over a 54-hour period after administration. Drug levels were determined using Bacillus subtilis spore suspension on Meuller-Hinton antibiotic medium. Intravenous administration produced drug levels which followed a bi-exponential decay according to the model C = 101e(-1.84(t)) + 1.30e(-0.06(t)). After i.m. administration, the mean Cmax observed (2.01 microg/mL) occurred at 1 h and levels were detected for up to 48 h. The mean time to maximum concentration (Tmax) for the birds occurred at 0.79 h. The model describing serum concentrations after i.m. administration was C = 1.35e(-0.48(t)) + 1.27e(-0.07(t)) - 2.06e(-2.1(t)). Serum concentrations after oral administration were lower and the mean +/- standard error of mean, of the maximum concentrations (Cmax) was 0.99 microg/mL at 2 h after administration. The mean residence times after the 3 routes of administration were not significantly different and ranged from 12.5-13.7 h. Bioavailability by the oral route was 80.1%. Dialysis of chicken plasma vs saline indicated that the protein binding was 22.7%.  相似文献

Two contrasting phases of work are described that help inform the development and requirements of a soil monitoring system: firstly, the development and application of a multi-criterion analysis of soil quality indicators grounded in the basic natural sciences; and secondly, scrutiny of the outcome of that process by a wide range of non-specialist but key stakeholders at a workshop. This process ensures that the final monitoring design meets both the scientific rigour expected from a monitoring system and as far as possible meets the aspirations of policy and regulatory stakeholders. Individual indicators of soil quality were evaluated in terms of their applicability against a number of important environmental and logistical parameters and therefore their overall fitness for purpose. These included relevance to different soil types, functions, habitats and threats to soil, the inherent variability of soil, and a range of technical aspects such as analytical complexity, precision and reproducibility of analytical results and whether a standard operating procedure (SOP) existed for the technique. A tiered approach to soil monitoring was supported by workshop delegates. This will require indicators that are suitable and effective at national, site-specific and process-level scales. In addition, the opportunities for synchronizing soil monitoring with air and water quality monitoring should be considered and the potential for integrating on-site measurements with remote methods should be researched further. It was considered by workshop attendees that soil monitoring should be rooted in pedological principles (i.e. recognizing defined soil horizons) to ensure that results can be extrapolated from individual sites and to retain flexibility.  相似文献

Fecal specimens were composited and a hydrophobic-grid membrane-filter method was used to measure antimicrobial resistance to ampicillin 16 μg/ml, carbadox 30 μg/ml, gentamicin 4 μ/ml, nitrofurantoin 32 μg/ml, spectinomycin 16 μg/ml, sulfisoxazole 32 μg/ml and tetracycline 8 μg/ml among 8119 Escherichia coli isolates from 68 fecal samples collected on 34 farrow-to-finish swine farms marketing over 500 hogs/yr. The overall prevalences of resistance to antimicrobials among these isolates were: ampicillin 29%, carbadox 3.5%, gentamicin 0.6%, nitrofurantoin 27%, spectinomycin 28%, sulfasoxizole 38% and tetracycline 71%. Thirty to seventy-six per cent of the variations in prevalences were explained by between-farm differences.  相似文献

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to measure total antibody to Toxoplasma gondii in serum samples from macropods. The validity of the assay was established by comparing parasite isolation in mice for 17 Tasmanian pademelons (Thylogale billardierii) and 17 Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus). The ELISA was then used to detect antibody against T. gondii in serum from 236 macropods, collected from 21 locations in Tasmania, including Flinders Island. Antibody against T. gondii was detected in 20 animals (15 T. billardierii and 5 M. rufogriseus). There was a significant (p less than 0.01) difference in possession of T. gondii antibodies between adult (greater than or equal to 1 year of age) Tasmanian pademelons and Bennett's wallabies.  相似文献

The branch bag method was used to monitor photosynthesis and transpiration of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and hazelnut (Corylus cornuta Marsh.) over a 42-day midsummer period in 1996, as part of the Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS). During the same period, daytime measurements of stomatal conductance (g(s)) and leaf water potential (Psi(leaf)) were made on these species, and sap flow was monitored in aspen stems by the heat pulse method. Weather conditions during the study period were similar to the long-term average. Despite moist soils, both species showed an inverse relationship between daytime g(s) and vapor pressure deficit (D) when D was > 0.5 kPa. Daytime Psi(leaf) was below -2 MPa in aspen and near -1.5 MPa in hazelnut, except on rainy days. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that stomatal responses are constrained by hydraulic resistance from root to leaf, and by the need to maintain Psi(leaf) above a minimum threshold value. Reductions in g(s) on sunny afternoons with elevated ambient D (maximum 2.3 kPa) were associated with a significant decrease in photosynthetic rates. However, day-to-day variation in mean carbon assimilation rate was small in both species, and appeared to be governed more by solar radiation than D. These results may be generally applicable to healthy aspen stands under normal midsummer conditions in the southern boreal forest. However, strong reductions in carbon uptake may be expected at the more extreme values of D (> 4 kPa) that occur during periods of regional drought, even if soil water is not locally limiting.  相似文献
