The holding power of orthopedic screws in the third metacarpal and metatarsal cadaver bones of foals that were aged from 1 to 14 days was tested. Comparative trials between screws inserted at the same site in contralateral bones from the same foal were performed to compare the holding power of 5.5 mm cortical and 6.5 mm cancellous screws in the metaphysis, and the holding power of 5.5 and 4.5 mm cortical screws in the diaphysis. A MTS servohydraulic tensile testing machine was used to perform screw pullouts at a displacement rate of 19 mm/sec. There was no significant difference between maximum holding power of 5.5 mm cortical screws and 6.5 mm cancellous screws in the metaphysis when expressed as kg per mm of bone width at the screw insertion site (p = 0.097) or as kg per mm of screw thread engaged in the bone (p = 0.17). There was no significant difference in holding power of 5.5 and 6.5 mm screws in the proximal versus distal metaphysis (p = 0.10). The 5.5 mm screws had significantly greater holding power than the 4.5 mm screws in the diaphysis (p = 0.0097). Fixation failure at screw pullout was always due to bone shear. In internal fixation in foal bone, the 5.5 mm screws may be a suitable alternative to 6.5 mm screws in the metaphysis. Use of 5.5 mm rather than 4.5 mm screws is recommended in the diaphysis because of greater holding power.  相似文献

The processes associated with water movement through silt loam soils involve both the flow through macropores as preferential flow or macropore flow and flow through the micropore as matrix flow. Macropore and matrix flow components were separated from total flow by a hydrograph-separation technique which used the assumption of dual porosity and a tracer mass balance. A mixture of potassium bromide was applied through a rain simulator to four plots in northern Mississippi in two rain events at 12.7 mm/h lasting 5 and 3 h separated by 6 h. The plots were either tilled or no-tilled with drains installed by two methods at the surface of the fragipan. The magnitude of water and bromide (Br) transported by macropore flow to a drain line were estimated and the resulting hydrographs provided an indication of the potential significance of macropore flow in transporting water and non-reactive chemicals through macropores to the shallow groundwater system. Matrix flow appears to contribute the majority of the water moving to the drains even during the early stages of the drain flow hydrographs. The no-till plots produced more macropore flow than the tilled plots, independent of how the drains were installed. Macropore flow in the drainage at any time was small as compared to the matrix flow; however it contributed a disproportionate amount of Br tracer. These data support the concept that models used to predict mass balances using only the matrix (Darcian) flow will underestimate those chemicals that move like bromide into the soil profile.  相似文献

Plant resistance to herbivores was induced in a field experiment to evaluate the consequences of induced responses for subsequent herbivory and plant fitness. Induction early in the season resulted in halving of herbivory by chewing herbivores and a reduction in the abundance of phloem-feeding aphids when compared with controls. A correlate of lifetime plant fitness, seed mass, was enhanced by over 60 percent for individuals that were induced.  相似文献

Magneto-optical imaging was used to visualize the inhomogeneous penetration of magnetic flux into polycrystalline TlBa2Ca2Cu3Ox films with high critical current densities, to reconstruct the local two-dimensional supercurrent flow patterns and to correlate inhomogeneities in this flow with the local crystallographic misorientation. The films have almost perfect c-axis alignment and considerable local a- and b-axis texture because the grains tend to form colonies with only slightly misaligned a and b axes. Current flows freely over these low-angle grain boundaries but is strongly reduced at intermittent colony boundaries of high misorientation. The local (<10-micrometer scale) critical current density Jc varies widely, being up to 10 times as great as the transport Jc (scale of approximately 1 millimeter), which itself varies by a factor of about 5 in different sections of the film. The combined experiments show that the magnitude of the transport Jc is largely determined by a few high-angle boundaries.  相似文献

Reliable induction of timed ovulation is an important managerial tool in any horse-breeding operation. Not only does breeding close to ovulation increase pregnancy rates when using cooled, frozen, or poor-quality semen, but it also reduces the number of inseminations needed per cycle, resulting in a more efficient breeding program. To better predict ovulation time in the long estrus period of the mare, one could increase the frequency of transrectal palpations and ultrasounds and/or implement hormonal therapies to induce ovulations. However, previous studies have been unclear on the exact timing of ovulation of mares treated with human chorionic gonadotropin (Chorulon, Intervet Inc, Millsboro, DE) or deslorelin acetate (Ovuplant, Pharmacia and UpJohn Co, Kalamazoo, MI). This study was designed to determine the timing of ovulation after Ovuplant or Chorulon treatment in normal cycling mares presented to the veterinary clinic. In addition, the pregnancy rates were determined for mares bred when a single insemination, using frozen or chilled semen, was performed at a fixed time (36 hours) after Ovuplant or Chorulon treatment. Thirty-two mares were given a subcutaneous injection of 7.5 mg of prostaglandin F2α (Lutlyse, Ft Dodge Animal Health, Ft Dodge, IA) 5 days after the last ovulation and were examined every 48 hours until estrus was detected based on a dominant follicle and the presence of endometrial edema as determined by ultrasonographic examination. Group 1 (N = 12) was treated intravenously with 2,500 units of Chorulon, and group 2 (N = 20) was treated subcutaneously with Ovuplant as soon as mares were determined to be in estrus. Once treated all mares were examined by rectal palpation and ultrasound at 0, 12, 24, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, hours or until ovulation was detected. Ovulation rate in response to Chorulon was 83.3% at 48 hours, 91.6% at 72 hours, and 100% at 96 hours. All of the mares in the Ovuplant-treated group had ovulated by 48 hours. Chi-square analysis of the data showed a significant (P < .01) variation in the distribution of ovulation times between mares treated with Chorulon and mares treated with Ovuplant. This study provides enough evidence to support the hypothesis that timing of ovulation is a more reliable event in mares treated with Ovuplant compared with those treated with Chorulon.  相似文献
