A zinc-containing intraruminal device has been developed for protecting lambs against facial eczema. The rate of release of zinc from the device has been optimised, and its safety in use established. Under both experimental and farm conditions, the device gave excellent protection against the liver injury associated with facial eczema. The device relies upon erosion for release of zinc, and disappears completely when its charge of zinc has been released, leaving no metal or plastic residue in the rumen. This device has the potential to greatly ameliorate the problem of facial eczema in New Zealand.  相似文献

Duration of immunity in foxes vaccinated orally with ERA vaccine in a bait.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) vaccinated orally with the ERA strain of rabies vaccine in a bait were challenged after 83 mo. Ten of 11 foxes that had seroconverted following vaccination resisted challenge with a virulent rabies virus which produced clinical signs of rabies in 6 of 6 unvaccinated foxes. Five of 11 vaccinated animals retained titers of rabies virus neutralizing antibody throughout the period. Although 6 of 11 had no detectable antibody at the time of challenge, 5 of these 6 resisted challenge and had an anamnestic response, as indicated by elevated titers of antibody when measured at day 77 postchallenge. These results show that foxes can be immunized successfully with a single oral dose of ERA vaccine, probably with protection against a lethal rabies challenge, for at least 7 y.  相似文献

The chiral inversion of 2-arylpropionic acids occurs in many species. It is a unique reaction specific to this group of drugs. In this study R-(-)-fenoprofen (R-(-)-FPF) was used as a model compound to investigate metabolic chiral inversion in sheep in vivo and in vitro and to compare the data with the results obtained in rats. Metabolic inversion in sheep was 80%. The apparent mean values of Km and V max of thioester formation were: 392 μm and 2.08 nmol/min/mg in sheep and 500 μm and 22 nmol/min/mg in rats. For hydroxylation, the apparent mean values were Vmax: 0.02 nmol/min/mg in rats and 0.01 nmol/min/mg in sheep. There was no correlation between in vitro thioesterification and in vivo chiral inversion in sheep as compared to rats. In sheep most of the thioester formed underwent inversion (80%) while in rats, where in vitro thioesterification was greater, in vivo inversion was less (42%). In consequence, in rats other metabolic pathways for R(-)-FPF-CoA, such as incorporation into triacylglycerols and conjugation with amino acids, may be quantitatively more important  相似文献

The objective of this study is to assess the influence of acute exercise, training and intensified training on the plasma amino acid profile.In a 32-week longitudinal study using 10 Standardbred horses, training was divided into four phases, including a phase of intensified training for five horses. At the end of each phase, a standardized exercise test, SET, was performed. Plasma amino acid concentrations before and after each SET were measured.Training significantly reduced mean plasma aspartic acid concentration, whereas exercise significantly increased the plasma concentrations of alanine, taurine, methionine, leucine, tyrosine and phenylalanine and reduced the plasma concentrations of glycine, ornithine, glutamine, citrulline and serine. Normally and intensified trained horses differed not significantly. It is concluded that amino acids should not be regarded as limiting training performance in Standardbreds except for aspartic acid which is the most likely candidate for supplementation.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of hepatic and renal impairment on the pharmacokinetics of enrofloxacin in Sprague-Dawley rats. Experimental hepatic and renal failure were induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCL4) and 5/6 nephrectomy, respectively. After intravenous dosing of enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg), plasma concentrations of enrofloxacin were measured using liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometry. There was no significant effect of hepatic impairment on enrofloxacin pharmacokinetics. However, renal impairment markedly prolonged elimination half life (t1/2λz) of enrofloxacin (P < 0.05), comparing with respective control. Total body clearance (Clb) and volume of distribution at steady state (Vss) were significantly decreased (P < 0.05) by renal impairment. In conclusion, these results suggested that renal impairment could affect the pharmacokinetics of enrofloxacin.  相似文献

The accuracy of the Rice pelvimeter for measuring pelvic area of double muscled Belgian Blue (BB) cattle was investigated by comparing measurements in the live animal with these obtained from the same animal after slaughter. Pelvic measurements from 466 BB-cows aged 2–10 years old and of an excellent carcass qualification (S and E in the SEUROP classification) were measured with the pelvimeter approximately 12 h prior to, and by graded ruler within 2 h after, slaughter. The mean difference of measurements between living and dead cattle were − 0.2 cm for pelvic width (95% limits of agreement − 2.5–2.1 cm), and 1.2 cm for pelvic height (95% limits of agreement − 1.8–4.1 cm). The correlation coefficient between all pelvic measurements was between 0.46 and 0.59 (p < 0.001). The age of the animals influenced only pelvic height whilst carcass weight influenced all the components of the pelvic area. There was a significant correlation between the pelvimetric measurements of the birth canal in living cattle obtained using a Rice pelvimeter compared to actual measurements obtained from the carcass. The Rice pelvimeter is a suitable tool for assessing accurate pelvic skeletal conformation and to select animals in this breed with a larger birth canal and hence less dystocia problems.  相似文献

Fenbendazole-related drug residues in milk from treated dairy cows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Oral administration of [14C] fenbendazole (FBZ) at a dose of 5.Omg/kg leads to the presence of radiolabel in the milk of lactating dairy cows. However, the maximum mean concentration of total FBZ equivalents quantitated to one-third of the recommended safe concentration in milk (1.67 μg/mL). The label is equally distributed to the fat and aqueous portions of the milk. The maximum level, in general, is attained approximately 24-36 h after drug administration, with the highest levels ranging from 24 to 48 h after administration. The residues rapidly deplete, attaining levels of 10-20ng/mL by day 5, and are essentially undetectable by radiolabel monitoring by day 6. Extraction of the milk by matrix solid phase dispersion indicated that the label was distributed between traces of the parent drug, FBZ, and predominantly, the FBZ sulphoxide (SO) and sulphone (SO2) metabolites. No other radiolabelled peaks were observed. Based on these data the metabolites of FBZ, FBZ-sulphone and FBZ-sulphoxide, could be used as marker residues for monitoring the administration of FBZ to lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

Knowledge of the frequency of direct and indirect contacts between pig herds is a requirement for understanding the potential between-herd transmission of pathogens. Our aim was to investigate the different contacts between Belgian pig herds. We obtained data by conducting a postal survey on 421 pig herds in August 2005 and by analysis of available information on livestock movements in the national identification-and-registration database (18-months period in 2004-2006). Direct contacts included transports of pigs by onto-farm, off-farm and between-farm movements. Indirect contacts included vehicles entering the herd and visitors entering the stables. The median number of direct contacts per herd made by onto-farm movements was 0.2/month (Q1: 0; Q3: 0.5). About 1.2% of herds had > or = 3 onto-farm movements/month. We used a zero-inflated negative-binomial regression model to describe differences in the number of onto-farm movements according to herd size and herd type. Piglet multipliers followed by finishing herds were predicted to have the most onto-farm movements. Farrow-to-finishing herds made less movements compared to breeding herds. A median of 3997 between-farm movements/month was made in Belgium; these mainly concerned piglets. The median number of origin herds during an 8-month period for between-farm movements was 4 (Q1: 2; Q3: 8). For a typical 1-month period, we constructed directed graphs of between-farm piglet and replacement stock movements, illustrating potential receivers and distributors of infection. Of these between-farm movements, many were made over a short distance (median straight-line distance 19 km (Q1: 8; Q3: 36)). The median number of vehicles entering a herd and visitors entering the stables was 8/month (Q1: 6; Q3: 13) and 3/month (Q1: 2; Q3: 6) respectively. The number of indirect contacts by vehicles and persons were associated with herd size (Spearman's r: 0.7 and 0.2), herd type and other factors. Skewness of both direct and indirect contacts, illustrated that there was a wide variety in contact structure between pig herds in Belgium. Infection control might benefit by accounting for this variation in contacts and by targeting 'high-risk' herds in case of animal-disease emergencies.  相似文献

To investigate possible circadian and ultradian periodicities for peripheral insulin and urea in lactating dairy cows, integrated 15-min blood samples were taken sequentially over 48 hr from six cows. In addition, radiotelemetry measurements of body temperature were averaged over the same 15-min periods. Cows were housed in an environmental chamber at 19 degrees C with lights on 0700 to 2300 hr; fed daily at 0900 hr; and milked at 0800 and 2000 hr. For five of the six cows, body temperature showed a circadian rhythm peaking at 2323 hr with an amplitude of 0.34 degree C. For the sixth cow, body temperature was 180 degrees out-of-phase, peaking at 1230 hr with an amplitude of 0.12 degree C. Circadian rhythms for insulin and urea were consistent for all six cows peaking at 1743 hr with an amplitude of 0.74 ng/ml for insulin and at 1034 hr with an amplitude of 3.83 mM for urea. Body temperature and insulin also displayed episodic increases that often exceeded the amplitudes of circadian rhythms. For body temperature, a broad increase in spectral power was seen for periods between 100 and 175 min; time intervals between peaks averaged around 100 min. For insulin, power spectra for individual cows universally indicated rhythms with periods of approximately 45 and 80 min; time intervals between peaks averaged approximately 65 min. For urea, almost all spectral energy was confined to the 24-hr rhythm, although there was evidence of a low-amplitude, 60-min rhythm. In conclusion, when animals are acclimated to a rigidly controlled environment and frequent blood sampling is accomplished with minimal intervention, it is possible to detect rhythms inherent in the regulation of metabolic variables.  相似文献
