Nitrogen fertilizers used in agriculture often cause nitrate leaching towards shallow groundwater, especially in lowland areas where the flat topography minimize the surface run off. In order to introduce good agricultural practices that reduce the amount of nitrate entering the groundwater system, it is important to quantify the kinetic control on nitrate attenuation capacity. With this aim, a series of anaerobic batch experiments, consisting of loamy soils and nitrate-contaminated groundwater, were carried out using acetate and natural dissolved organic matter as electron donors. Acetate was chosen because it is the main intermediate species in many biodegradation pathways of organic compounds, and it is a suitable carbon source for denitrification. Sorption of acetate was also determined, fitting a Langmuir isotherm in both natural and artificially depleted organic matter soils. Experiments were performed in quadruplicate to account for the spatial variability of soil parameters. The geochemical code PHREEQC (version 2) was used to simulate kinetic denitrification using Monod equation, equilibrium Langmuir sorption of acetate, and equilibrium reactions of gas and mineral phases (calcite). The reactive modeling results highlighted a rapid acetate and nitrate mineralization rate, suggesting that the main pathway of nitrate attenuation is through denitrification while calcite acted as a buffer for pH. However, in the absence of acetate, the natural content of organic matter did not allow to complete the denitrification process leading to nitrite accumulation. Reactive modeling is thought to be an efficient and robust tool to quantify the complex biogeochemical reactions which can take place in underground environments.  相似文献

Water samples of the Passaúna River, Curitiba/Paraná (Brazil), were analyzed to determine total and thermotolerant coliform counts and Escherichia coli in order to provide information on human impacts on the water supply. Samples were collected and analyzed monthly, from March 2006 to February 2007, at five different locations along the river, and the multiple tube method was used to obtain total and thermotolerant coliform counts. The results varied from 130 MPN/100 mL to 1.6?×?106 MPN/100 mL for total coliforms, while for thermotolerant coliforms the variation was between 40 MPN/100 mL and 5?×?105 MPN/100 mL. The E. coli strains isolated from the samples were tested with 13 different antibiotics to determine their antibiotic resistance. The isolated strains were constantly sensitive to seven of the 13 antibiotics tested, and resistant to at least one of the other antibiotics. The results indicated that two factors could influence the increased contamination on this river, viz., seasonality parameters and domestic wastewater discharges. The determination of antibiotic resistance indices aimed to provide information on the anthropogenic influence. Only one of the locations investigated was considered critical due to the anthropogenic influence, with significant impacts from irregular domestic wastewater discharges.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of using a pilot-scale-constructed wetland as a tertiary system to simulate the treatment conditions of wastewater effluents from the metal-mechanical industry, aiming to achieve the Brazilian legal standards of phosphorus and nitrogen emission. The macrophytes were placed in 1 m3 polyethylene tanks, daily estimating the treatment of 2 m3 of effluents. The effluents were circulated in a horizontal subsurface flow through a porous matrix of thick sand and gravel, in which the roots of the macrophytes of the species Reed (Scirpus sp.) and Cattail (Typha sp.) were fixed. Monitoring of the pilot plant was performed through a battery of physical?Cchemical and biological analyses. Despite the load variations and operational problems, the system presented a positive degree of pollutant efficiency removal, especially for phosphorus (73% medium), TKN (61% medium), and NH4?CN (56% medium). Peak results were achieved during the last 3 months of monitoring. The chemical analysis of the support layer, plus the root system and aerial portion of the plants, revealed that these wastes could be used as fertilizer.  相似文献

The effluents from bleached Kraft pulp mill (BKME) and paper industry are toxic to different aquatic organisms being an important source of contamination to aquatic environments due to the presence of several chemicals produced during the production of Kraft pulp. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the exposure effects of a secondary-treated BKME in two different species of fish: Carassius auratus and Dicentrarchus labrax. Both species were exposed to different concentrations of secondary-treated effluent (1%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 100%) in semi-static tests under controlled laboratory conditions. At the end of the experimental period (21 days), samples of livers were collected for CYP1A determination and histopathological evaluation. The results show significant changes (p?<?0.05) of CYP1A induction in carp exposed to 50% and in sea bass exposed to 25% of the effluent. Histopathological alterations were also observed according to the different concentrations of the tested effluent suggesting that tested BKME cause damage to exposed organisms.  相似文献

This study investigated pyrene adsorption on two contrasting Brazilian soils: a Kandiudult and a Vertisol. It was found that the time taken to reach thermodynamic equilibrium depended on the soil type. The curves for different pyrene-to-soil mass ratios for Vertisol soil showed significant differences. This is probably related to the presence of 2:1 clays that may increase the adsorption of pyrene due to the resulting interlamellar space. The adsorption of pyrene on the Kandiudult showed, in general, good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm. In the case of the Vertisol, there was good agreement with the linear isotherm. The kinetic model that best explains the adsorption in Kandiudult was the pseudo second-order model. For the Vertisol, the Morris Weber model best explains the behavior of pyrene.  相似文献

We present here the effects of ambient ozone (O3)-induced decline in carbon availability, accelerated foliar senescence, and a decrease in aboveground biomass accumulation in the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.). Aleppo pine seedlings were continuously exposed in open-top chambers for 39 months to three different types of O3 treatments, which are as follows: charcoal-filtered air, nonfiltered air (NFA), and nonfiltered air supplemented with 40 ppb O3 (NFA+). Stable carbon isotope discrimination (??) and derived time-integrated c i/c a ratios were reduced after an accumulated ozone exposure over a threshold of 40 ppb (AOT40) value from April to September of around 20,000 ppb·h. An AOT40 of above 67,000 ppb·h induced reductions in ribulose-1,5-biphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity, aboveground C and needle N and K concentrations, the C/N ratio, Ca concentrations in twigs under 3 mm, and the aerial biomass, as well as increases in needle P concentrations and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity and the N and K concentrations in twigs under 3 mm. Macronutrients losses, the limitations placed on carbon uptake, and increases in catabolic processes may be the causes of carbon gain diminution in leaves which was reflected as a reduction in aboveground biomass at tree level. Stimulation of PEPC activity, the consequent decreased ??, and compensation processes in nutrient distribution may increase O3 tolerance and might be interpreted as part of Aleppo pine acclimation response to O3.  相似文献

Concentrations of heavy metals in the western coast of Venezuela are partly driven by anthropogenic influences. To detect metal changes over time, the waters and sediments from 19 sites, across various marine ecosystems, were sampled seven times between 2000 and 2001 and compared with previous studies. The water samples had mean concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn above the guideline values proposed by NOAA as capable of producing chronic effects in the marine biota. In sediments, the mean Cd concentration also exceeded NOAA??s Effects Range?CLow values for all habitat types, and in sheltered sites, it exceeded NOAA??s Effects Range?CMedian values. The meta-analysis indicated that metal concentrations in water were higher in 2000?C2001 than in 1995?C1997, with the exception of Pb. In sediments, however, only the concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Pb increased in this period. This increase was particularly noticeable for Cd which, by 2000?C2001, showed Igeo values indicating that Morrocoy National Park could be considered strongly to extremely polluted. This increment in the metal concentrations could be associated with: (1) an anomalous precipitation event that occurred at the end of 1999 and which caused a disturbance in the sediment chemistry of most metals and/or (2) an increase in the anthropogenic and natural input of Cd probably associated with the production of fertilizers in the region during the period analyzed. Special attention should be paid to Cd levels in this area as it represents a high toxicological risk for the biota in different habitats.  相似文献

With the emerging crisis of water, greywaters represent a significant resource of water if considering recycling for uses not requiring a drinking water quality. Samples of greywaters were taken from a few households. Their characterization led to results similar to those in literature. However, they showed a lack of phosphorus in C/N/P ratio. Nevertheless, it was shown that, in our study, median was more appropriate than mean. The potential treatment steps studied during this work were sand bed filtration, adsorption onto granular activated carbon (GAC), and sanitation by chlorine. The sand bed which was supplied with sequential feedings led to a very good removal of total suspended solids (TSS; and consequently of turbidity) as well as to a 30% COD decrease. However, the organic matter withdrawal was more efficient by adsorption onto GAC. The chlorination of greywaters was efficient to decrease the microbial population. Therefore, following the reclaimed water quality which would be required treatment might imply all steps or just one or two. This kind of low-cost device could thus be implemented for reuse such as irrigation, agricultural need, or urban use.  相似文献

In this study, the photocatalytic degradation of commercial azo dye (Remazol Red 133) in the presence of titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspensions as photocatalyst was investigated. The effect of various operational parameters, such as pH of dye solution and catalyst concentration on the photocatalytic degradation process, was examined. The mineralization of dye was also evaluated by measuring the chemical oxygen demand of the dye solutions. The extent of photocatalytic degradation was found to increase with increasing TiO2 concentration. For the Remazol Red dye solutions, a 120-min treatment resulted in 97.9% decolorization and 87.6% degradation at catalyst loading of 3 g/L. Experiments using real textile wastewater were also carried out. Textile wastewater degradation was enhanced at acidic conditions. The decolorization and degradation efficiencies for textile wastewater were 97.8% and 84.9% at pH 3.0, catalyst loading of 3 g/L, and treatment time of 120 min.  相似文献

This research study used sewage sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants to restore road embankments. The results have been used to propose a series of basic principles for the application of sludge in this context. In the study, six experimental plots (each composed of one cut slope and one fill slope) were set up on a highway located in the province of Jaen (Spain). The soil and vegetation in the plots were restored by a conventional hydroseeding process, with each plot receiving a different sludge dosage. A control plot did not receive any treatment at all, whereas another plot was hydroseeded, but without any sludge added to the slurry mix. In the plots, soil evolution was controlled from the moment that the embankment was created and hydroseeded until the present. As part of the soil monitoring process, agronomic parameters and the heavy metal content of the soil were analyzed in the laboratory. Another parameter of analysis was the vegetation cover, which was studied on the basis of on-site visual inspections and the rasterization of images with a view to calculate the percentage of vegetation cover on each plot. Results showed the effectiveness of sewage sludge as an organic complement in the restoration of road embankments. Its viability is enhanced by the fact that the sludge can be applied with the same methods used in public highway construction. The results also showed the optimal sludge dosage to be used in the slurry mix during the hydroseeding process.  相似文献
