Myostatin is a member of the transforming growth factor-β family with a key role in inhibition of muscle growth by negative regulation of both myoblast proliferation and differentiation. Recently, a genomic region on ECA18, which includes the MSTN gene, was identified as a candidate region influencing racing performance in Thoroughbreds. In this study, four SNPs on ECA18, g.65809482T>C, g.65868604G>T, g.66493737C>T, and g.66539967A>G, were genotyped in 91 Thoroughbred horses-in-training to evaluate the association between genotype and body composition traits, including body weight, withers height, chest circumference, cannon circumference, and body weight/withers height. Of these, statistically differences in body weight and body weight/withers height were associated with specific genotypes in males. Specifically, body weight/withers height showed statistically significant differences depending on genotype at g.658604G>T, g.66493737C>T, and g.66539967A>G (P<0.01) in males during the training period. Animals with a genotype associated with suitability for short-distance racing, C/C at g.66493737C>T, had the highest value (3.17 ± 0.05 kg·cm(-1)) for body weight/withers height in March, while those with a genotype associated with suitability for long-distance racing, T/T, had the lowest (2.99 ± 0.03 kg·cm(-1)). In females, the trends in the association of body weight/withers height with genotypes were similar to those observed in males. As the SNPs are not believed to be linked to coding variants in MSTN, these results suggest that regulation of MSTN gene expression influences skeletal muscle mass and hence racing performance, particularly optimum race distance, in Thoroughbred horses.  相似文献

It has been suggested that soil-thawing and snow-melting are critical triggers for vigorous emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) from soils in cold regions. However, because soil freezing is affected by air temperature and snow cover, accurate predictions that estimate subsequent emissions of this important greenhouse gas are difficult to make. In this study, we measured in situ soil gas N2O and oxygen (O2) concentrations at two experimental sites in northern Japan over the period of a year, from November 2008 to October 2009, to clarify the factors stimulating N2O production in soil at low temperatures. The sites were N-fertilized bare arable lands with different soil frost depths and snowmelt rates, according to the snow cover management imposed. Winter-to-spring net N2O fluxes, ranging from −0.10 to 1.95 kg N2O-N ha−1, were positively correlated with the annual maximum soil frost depth (ranging from 0.03 to 0.41 m; r = 0.951***). In the plots with deeper maximum soil frost, winter-to-spring N2O fluxes represented 58% to 85% of the annual values. Soil N2O production was stimulated when the soil frost depth was greater than 0.15 m or the daily mean soil temperature at 0.05-m depth was below −2.0 °C. In the soil with the greatest frost depth, soil gas N2O concentrations at the depth of 0.10 m peaked at 46 ppm when soil gas O2 concentrations fell down to 0.12 m3 m−3 under soil temperature below 0.0 °C. Snowmelt acceleration had no stimulating effect on N2O production in the soil during the winter-to-spring period.  相似文献

The immunomodulatory effects of a hot water extract from matured fruit of the date palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera L.) were investigated in comparison to those of prune and fig fruit in mice. The number of spleen IFN-γ(+)CD4(+), IFN-γ(+)CD49b(+) and IL-12(+)CD11b(+) cells was highest in mice given the date extract-added diet. Polyphenols identified in the date extract, such as chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, pelargonin and ferulic acid, stimulated IFN-γ mRNA expression significantly in mouse Peyer's patch cell cultures. Chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid also increased the number of IFN-γ(+)CD4(+) cells significantly, while some polyphenols increased the number of IFN-γ(+)CD49b(+) and IL-12(+)CD11b(+) cells significantly. On the other hand, a 70% ethanol-insoluble date extract treated with trypsin increased the number of IFN-γ(+)CD49b(+) and IL-12(+)CD11b(+) cells significantly. These results indicate that some polyphenols and polysaccharides present in date fruit stimulate the cellular immune system in mice.  相似文献

We examined the CO2 exchange of a Kobresia meadow ecosystem on the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau using a chamber system. CO2 efflux from the ecosystem was strongly dependence on soil surface temperature. The CO2 efflux-temperature relationship was identical under both light and dark conditions, indicating that no photosynthesis could be detected under light conditions during the measurement period. The temperature sensitivity (Q10) of the CO2 efflux showed a marked transition around −1.0 °C; Q10 was 2.14 at soil surface temperatures above and equal to −1.0 °C but was 15.3 at temperatures below −1.0 °C. Our findings suggest that soil surface temperature was the major factor controlling winter CO2 flux for the alpine meadow ecosystem and that freeze-thaw cycles at the soil surface layer play an important role in the temperature dependence of winter CO2 flux.  相似文献

Abstract

We observed carbon dioxide (CO2) flux at two experimental plots (wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) -planted and bare) for a year using an automatically controlled chamber. At each plot, two chambers were installed at six observation points by rotation. Consequently, the total installment duration at each point was one-third of the entire experimental period. Although we manually moved the chambers periodically, they hampered wheat growth and reduced the dried weight of harvested wheat by 65%. However, they did not influence the carbon (C) content ratio of harvested wheat. The rate of decrease of soil water contents after rainfall in the wheat plot was higher than that in the bare plot, especially after the canopy height reached around 30 cm. The maximum gap of soil water content at 5 cm depth between the two plots was about 5%. Wheat mitigated the increase of soil temperature in the daytime. The gap of soil temperature at 2 cm depth between the two plots sometimes exceeded 10°C. Considering the difference between dried weights of harvested wheat per unit ground area inside and outside the chamber collar, the annual net ecosystem exchange (NEE), whole ecosystem respiration and gross primary production were estimated respectively as –103 g C m?2 y?1, 831 g C m?2 y?1 and–934 g C m?2 y?1. The absolute values of each were smaller than those reported from past studies. Adding the exported carbon of harvested wheat (364 g C m?2) and subtracting the imported carbon of the seeds (3.1 g C m?2) to the NEE, net biome production across the ground surface was 259 g C m?2. It was greater than that in the bare plot (187 g C m?2). Although further improvements of measurements and more accurate estimated equations are necessary to evaluate the carbon budget correctly with chamber measurements, our chamber measurement captured the NEE variation, responding to seasonal, meteorological and biological changes.  相似文献

Anti-bacterial activity of two synthesized oligopeptides, RLYLRIGRR-NH2 (peptide A) and RLRLRIGRR-NH2 (peptide B), both which based on a putative active site of defensin, an anti-bacterial peptide from the beetle Allomyrina dichotoma, was examined by macroscopic and histopathologic assessment during the course of infection in mice inoculated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in vivo. Both peptides A and B decreased the mortality of mice inoculated with MRSA. Peptides A and B decreased the macroscopical and histopathological lesions by MRSA infection in mice even seven days after the challenge. The anti-bacterial activity of peptides A and B has a therapeutic effect on MRSA infection in mice even seven days after being challenged.  相似文献
