Soils result from the interaction of five independent formation factors.If one factor varies,while the others remain constant,different soils can be produced.Herein,we demonstrated an opposing trend,wherein two soils were similar,despite considerable differences in all factors of soil formation.We sampled two Inceptisols (Oxic Dystrudepts) formed on different parent materials (gneiss vs.mica schist),climate (tropical altimontane vs.warmer,drier plateau),topography (1 650 m,45% slope vs.1000 m,8% slope),time (rejuvenated vs.old,stable surface),and vegetation (rainforest vs.Cerrado savanna).The two soils had similar chemical properties,whereas the soil on mica schist had finer particle size distribution,lower porosity,and lower saturated hydraulic conductivity.These properties were related to a coarser blocky microstructure compared to the soil on gneiss.Both soils presented active mineral weathering and pronounced pedoplasmation,demonstrated by clay contents > 300 g kg-1,although only the Dystrudept on gneiss possessed coarse rock fragments.The C horizons of both soils presented fragmented clay coatings suggestive of argilluviation,likely relict,because they were not observed in the B horizons.The similarities in many properties of the two Dystrudepts,despite contrasting factors of soil formation,suggest converging evolution and that soil classification at the subgroup level was efficient in grouping similar formative processes in tropical conditions.Moreover,this work revealed that similar pedogenic processes acting on different factors of soil formation can result in similar soil properties,at least for Inceptisols where further soil development is hindered by topographic limitations. 相似文献

Rice straw is a major organic material applied to rice fields. The microorganisms growing on rice-straw-derived carbon have not been well studied. Here, we applied 13C-labeled rice straw to submerged rice soil microcosms and analyzed phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) in the soil and percolating water to trace the assimilation of rice-straw-derived carbon into microorganisms. PLFAs in the soil and water were markedly enriched with 13C during the first 3 days of incubation, which indicated immediate incorporation of rice-straw-derived carbon into microbial biomass. The enrichment of PLFAs in the percolating water with 13C suggested that microorganisms other than the population colonizing rice straw also assimilated rice-straw-derived carbon or that some bacterial groups were selectively released from the straw. The microbial populations could be categorized into two communities based on the carbon isotope data of the PLFAs: those derived from rice straw and those derived from soil organic matter (SOM). The composition of the PLFAs from the two communities differed, which indicated the assimilation of rice-straw-derived carbon by a subset of microbial populations. The composition of rice-straw-derived PLFAs in the percolating water was also distinct from that in the soil. 相似文献

Electrolysis of a 0.1% (17.1 mM) solution of NaCl using separate anode and cathode compartments gives rise to solutions containing active chemical species. The strongly acidic "anode solution" (EW+) has high levels of dissolved oxygen and available chlorine in a form of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) with a strong potential for sterilization, which we have investigated here. Exposing Aspergillus parasiticus at an initial density of 10(3)spores in 10 microL to a 50-fold volume (500 microL) of EW+ containing ca. 390 micromol HOCl for 15 min at room temperature resulted in a complete inhibition of fungal growth, whereas the cathode solution (EW-) had negligible inhibitory effects. Moreover, the mutagenicity of aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)) for Salmonella typhimurium TA-98 and TA-100 strains was strongly reduced after AFB(1) exposure to the EW+ but not with the EW-. In high-performance liquid chromatography analysis, the peak corresponding to AFB(1) disappeared after treatment with the EW+, indicating decomposition of the aflatoxin. In contrast, the routinely used disinfectant sodium hypochlorite, NaOCl, of the same available chlorine content as that of EW+ but in a different chemical form, hypochlorite (OCl-) ion, did not decompose AFB(1) at pH 11. However, NaOCl did decompose AFB(1) at pH 3, which indicated that the principle chemical formula to participate in the decomposition of AFB(1) is not the OCl- ion but HOCl. Furthermore, because the decomposition of AFB(1) was suppressed by pretreating the EW+ with the OH radical scavenger thiourea, the chemical species responsible for the AFB(1)-decomposing property of the EW+ should be at least due to the OH radical originated from HOCl. In non-flooded lowland rain forests with low soil phosphorus (P) in parts of Amazonia, P cycling largely occurs via leaf litter recycling by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal symbionts. Occasional high input of P into these ecosystems occurs during drought years with increased litterfall. As the length and frequency of drought events are projected to increase in the region, a single-dose nutrient addition experiment was carried out to test how this would impact P cycling. An application rate of 4 kg P ha-1 was used, which corresponds to twice the amount of litter-derived P in an average year. It was hypothesized that i) the added mineral P would be immobilized by soil microorganisms, leading to measurable increase in soil microbial biomass carbon (C) and P and ii) AM colonization rate would be reduced by the pulse in mineral P available for plant uptake. The results did not support either of our hypotheses. The addition of P did not have an effect on AM root colonization, nor was P immobilized by soil microbiota during the experimental period. The lack of a difference between the control and treatment at our study site could be attributed to the relatively low one-off dose of P applied that did not change either the colonization rate of roots by AM fungi or the amount of soil available labile P. To obtain a mechanistic understanding of the availability, capture, and use of P by plant-symbiont associations in tropical rain forest ecosystems, further integrated studies of the soil-plant system combining long-term nutrient manipulations, modeling, and experimental approaches are required. 相似文献

Selective attention mechanisms route behaviorally relevant information through large-scale cortical networks. Although evidence suggests that populations of cortical neurons synchronize their activity to preferentially transmit information about attentional priorities, it is unclear how cortical synchrony across a network is accomplished. Based on its anatomical connectivity with the cortex, we hypothesized that the pulvinar, a thalamic nucleus, regulates cortical synchrony. We mapped pulvino-cortical networks within the visual system, using diffusion tensor imaging, and simultaneously recorded spikes and field potentials from these interconnected network sites in monkeys performing a visuospatial attention task. The pulvinar synchronized activity between interconnected cortical areas according to attentional allocation, suggesting a critical role for the thalamus not only in attentional selection but more generally in regulating information transmission across the visual cortex. 相似文献

Ion channels are tightly involved in various aspects of cell physiology, including cell signaling, proliferation, motility, endo- and exo-cytosis. They may be involved in toxin production and release by marine dinoflagellates, as well as harmful algal bloom proliferation. So far, the patch-clamp technique, which is the most powerful method to study the activity of ion channels, has not been applied to dinoflagellate cells, due to their complex cellulose-containing cell coverings. In this paper, we describe a new approach to overcome this problem, based on the preparation of spheroplasts from armored bloom-forming dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum. We treated the cells of P. minimum with a cellulose synthesis inhibitor, 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (DCB), and found out that it could also induce ecdysis and arrest cell shape maintenance in these microalgae. Treatment with 100–250 µM DCB led to an acceptable 10% yield of P. minimum spheroplasts and was independent of the incubation time in the range of 1–5 days. We show that such spheroplasts are suitable for patch-clamping in the cell-attached mode and can form 1–10 GOhm patch contact with a glass micropipette, allowing recording of ion channel activity. The effect of the inclusion of probiotics (Vibrio alginolyticus) and β-1,3/1,6-glucans in Penaeus vannamei larviculture was evaluated by measuring the immune response and survival of shrimp juveniles subjected to white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) challenge tests (per os) and pond culture. Treatments were designed to contrast the probiotic factor (inclusion vs non-inclusion) and β-1,3/1,6-glucans supplementation in various larvae stages; starting from early stage (Zoea II), to middle stage (PL 12), late stage (15 days pre-challenge) or non-supplemented. In larviculture, the highest survival was obtained in animals treated with β-1,3/1,6-glucans from Zoea II. The use of probiotics enhanced survival during the first 0-52 h post-WSSV challenge period. During 56-156 h post-WSSV challenge period, interactions were observed between β-1,3/1,6-glucans × time and β-1,3/1,6-glucans × time × probiotics. Significant differences in final survival rates between treatments were not observed. In the second WSSV challenge, immune parameters were analysed. Significant interaction between probiotics and β-1,3/1,6-glucans was observed for plasmatic protein (PP) concentration, super oxide anion (O2−) generation, antibacterial activity (AA), and total haemocyte count (THC). The use of probiotics in larviculture had a negative effect on the PP, but increased the AA and THC, while β-1,3/1,6-glucans had a negative effect on the O2− generation. The most relevant results were obtained from treatments T2 (probiotics in larviculture, β-1,3/1,6-glucans from Z II) and T4 (probiotics in larviculture, β-1,3/1,6-glucans 15 days before challenge). Treatment T2 presented the highest survival rate in larviculture. After WSSV infection, the animals of this treatment displayed resistance to the virus, a strong AA and increase of THC. Treatment T4 increased the amount of PP, increased the O2− generation and THC. Histological analysis showed that the animals of treatment T2 and T4 were able to limit the spread of the virus during the first hour after challenge with WSSV. The survivors from treatments T2 and T4 had a high THC, accompanied by a lack of white spot disease (WSD) injuries. A bioassay was carried out under farm conditions during the warm-rainy season using larvae from treatments T2 and T4. The animals were stocked at 18 animals/m2 in earth ponds of 0.20 ha (three ponds/larvae kind). WSD outbreak was not detected, and the survival was significantly higher in ponds stocked with larvae from treatment T4 (70 ± 3%) than in ponds stocked with larvae from treatment T2 (49 ± 9%). 相似文献

SUMMARY: In a study of the relationship between structural changes and rheological parameters of raw and cooked abalone meat, abalone Haliotis discus was cooked in boiling water for 3 h, then cut up and separated into cross- and vertical sections. Structural change was observed using a light microscope and scanning electron micrography. The rheological parameters were obtained by stress-relaxation experiments. Microscopic photography revealed that structural change between muscle fibers in both sections of the cooked meat was greater than that in the raw meat. The elastic modulus and rupture strength in both sections of cooked meat showed no difference between the cross- and vertical sections, and were smaller than those for the raw meat. The relaxation time for the cooked meat was also greater than for the raw meat. These results were mainly because of collagen being gelatinized during heating. These changes were also observed by staining collagen and differential scanning calorimetry. 相似文献
