The rolling shear strength of plywood was evaluated using a flexural vibration test. Test specimens were lauan and Douglas fir three-ply plywoods made from thick veneers. The dynamic shear and Young's moduli were determined using the flexural vibration method, which involved in-plane and out-of-plane flexural vibration. The rolling shear strength was determined using the static destructive method, which is dependent on the direction of the lathe check in the core veneer. Before and after accelerated aging treatments were conducted, there were relations between out-of-plane dynamic properties (out-of-plane shear and Young's moduli) and its rolling shear strength. It was concluded that the rolling shear strength is related not only to the shear property of the core but the flexural stiffness of two faces when the deformation of out-of-plane plywood was not restrained.Part of this work was presented at the 47th Annual Meeting of The Japan Wood Research Society, Kochi, April 1997  相似文献

The thoracic vertebral number is associated with body length and carcass traits, and represents one of the most important traits in the pig industry. Recent studies have shown that vertnin (VRTN) gene is associated with variations in the vertebral number in commercial European pigs. However, the genetic relationships and effect of this VRTN gene in pig production and carcass traits remain uncertain. Therefore, we investigated the genetic relationships among traits such as vertebral numbers, carcass weight and length‐related traits, and meat production traits, and the effect of VRTN gene polymorphisms on these traits in a Duroc purebred population selected for its meat production traits. Highly positive genetic correlations were obtained between the thoracic vertebral numbers and length‐related traits (0.56 to 0.84), whereas low correlations were obtained with production traits and carcass weight (?0.16 to 0.05). VRTN gene polymorphisms indicated that the number of thoracic vertebrae and length‐related traits were significantly associated with the VRTN genotype, but had no significant effect on production traits and carcass weight. The results indicate that VRTN gene may be used as an effective selection marker to obtain pigs with high thoracic vertebral numbers and length‐related traits, without adversely affecting meat production traits.  相似文献

The quantities of some extractives in the heartwood of 25 plus tree clones of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) from two different sites were investigated to clarify the differences in antitermite properties in relation to clones and environmental factors. The measured compounds were cubebol, epicubebol, sandaracopimarinol, and ferruginol. The total amounts of extractives were calculated from gas chromatogram peak areas. The heartwoods from Tano (Tano Forest Research Station, Miyazaki University; 31° N, 131° E, 130 m asl) tended to contain more of the individual extractives and total extractives than those from Komenono (Komenono Forest Research Station, Ehime University; 33° N, 132° E, 700 m asl). There was a significant difference (calculated by analysis of variance) at the 1% level among clones at both sites in quantities of total and individual extractives. This result suggests that the qualities and quantities of heartwood extractives are largely affected by genetic factors. Spearman’s rank correlation with the average of the extractive quantities at the sites was investigated. The correlation coefficients of total extractives, cubebol, epicubebol, sandaracopimarinol, and ferruginol were 0.61, 0.85, 0.76, 0.67, and 0.74, respectively. This result means that the order of the amounts of these compounds among the cultivars could be maintained at different sites. It is apparent that both environmental and genetic factors affected the quantities of these extractives in the heartwoods of Japanese cedar.  相似文献

This study attempted to explain the variation in growth of individual trees in a naturally regenerated, even-agedLarix sibirica stand using indices that represented the competitive and cooperative interactions among neighboring trees. These interaction indices and DBH were used in stepwise multiple regression procedures to model the growth of individual trees. However, when the data from all trees were used, DBH was the only factor accepted in the growth model. Since DBH can be influenced by the cumulative effect of past interaction and other environmental factors, we stratified the stand into three height strata and repeated the stepwise procedure for each stratum to remove the cumulative effect represented by DBH. Several competition and/or cooperation indices were accepted in growth models of the lower, middle and upper strata. In each stratum, the residual mean square of the growth model was smaller than that of all strata. These facts suggested that height stratification was generally successful in reducing the cumulative effect of past interaction and other factors. The cooperation indices that suggested protection from wind stress by neighboring trees was a significant variable in the growth models of all three strata. This demonstrated that cooperative interaction should be considered in the explanation of variation in tree growth in dry and windy climates such as the present study region. Variations of certain anatomical and mechanical indices within tree stems of aged sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) trees planted in Akita prefecture were studied. The determination of the juvenile/mature wood boundary was also discussed, and the effects of wood structure on mechanical properties were investigated. On the basis of radial and vertical variation of the anatomical and mechanical indices, modulus of elasticity (MOE)/ shear modulus (G) was chosen as the index for determining the juvenile/mature wood boundary. The increase rates of MOE/G at the points of 1%, 2%, and 3% were discussed. It was found that for aged trees, all three points were thought to be effective for dividing juvenile and mature wood. However, for younger trees, the point of 2% was recommended, which was mostly consistent with the result obtained by the increase rate of 1% for tracheid length (TL). Among mechanical properties, the MOE showed more significant juvenile/mature wood differences than did modulus of rupture (MOR) and . By correlation analysis, it was suggested that microfibril angle largely contributed to the indices of MOE and G, and specific gravity largely contributed to the indices of MOR and .Part of this report was presented at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Fukuoka, March 2003  相似文献

The wild tuber-bearing Solanumspecies represent a genetic pool of enormous diversity, embracing high variability for many agronomic traits. S. kurtzianum (ktz), S. chacoense(chc) and S. ruiz-lealii (rzl) are wild diploid self-incompatible relatives of the common potato, Solanum tuberosumssp. tuberosum, with resistance to adverse biotic and abiotic factors. Pollen-pistil/style compatibility relations and seed set in intra- and interspecific crosses among ktz, chc and rzl were investigated. Pre- and post-zygotic hybridization barriers were detected in the three species, with variable incidence because the percentage of genotypic combinations that produced seeds was15–30% and 7–28% in intra and interspecific crosses, respectively. In pollen-pistil/style incompatible combinations, either pollen grains did not germinate or pollen tube growth was arrested at different sites of the style, but mainly in its upper third. Unilateral incompatibility was detected in both intra-and interspecific crosses, as well as bilateral incompatibility in certain combinations. The incompatibility relations observed could be explained by a genetic model with dominant genes in pistils that interact with corresponding dominant genes in pollen, that are independent of the S-locus. The complex arrangement of compatibility relationships found could not be directly related to taxonomic hypothesis or geographic distribution. These results suggest that divergence between the three species has occurred recently, and that internal barriers of reproductive isolation have not been an important factor in their evolution. High temperature influences both grain yield and end‐use quality of wheat. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of selected wheat genotypes under heat stress and to examine the effects of high temperatures during grain filling on grain yield and end‐use quality parameters. Fifteen bread wheat genotypes in 2000/2001 and 18 genotypes in 2002/2003 were evaluated under the optimum and late‐sowing conditions of the irrigated hot environment of the Gezira Research Farm, Wad Medani, Sudan. The genotypes comprised released varieties and elite lines from the Sudanese wheat improvement programme. Data collected included grain yield, grain weight and grain end‐use quality including protein content, protein composition, SDS sedimentation values (SDSS) and gluten strength as determined by mixograph analyses. High temperatures significantly decreased grain yield by decreasing grain weight. Although genotypes exhibited variation in magnitude of response, results indicated that high temperature during grain filling increased both soluble and insoluble protein contents, SDSS, mixograph peak height (MPH) and the descending slope at 2 min past peak (MDS). In contrast, mixograph peak time (MPT) and the curve width at 2 min past peak (MCW) were significantly decreased. Flour protein correlated positively with SDSS, MPH and MDS and negatively with MCW. MPT correlated negatively with MDS and positively with MCW. Results indicate that high temperature increased both soluble and insoluble protein contents, SDSS and MPH, and hence the gluten strength, but decreased flour mixing time and tolerance and hence the dough elasticity. Variation observed among genotypes suggests that grain end‐use quality could be improved under high temperature conditions utilizing the available variability; however, it might require evaluation under various growing conditions.  相似文献

Although it is known that the compositions of low‐molecular weight glutenin subunits (LMW‐GSs) are important factors for bread‐making quality of wheat, it is still not clear which LMW‐GSs confer improved bread‐making quality and how those LMW‐GSs interact with high‐molecular weight (HMW) GSs. Using a hard red winter wheat line with good bread‐making quality and a Japanese wheat cultivar with poor quality as well as their progeny we identified LMW‐GSs associated with the bread‐making quality. One such LMW‐GS, KS2, which had a molecular weight of 42 kDa and was allelic to HS1, was associated with bread‐making quality. Furthermore, by using four recombinant inbred lines with different HMW‐GS and LMW‐GS combinations, KS2 and HMW‐GS 5+10 showed interaction effects on the bread‐making quality. Two‐dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (Page) analysis showed that KS2 consists of two protein components and that HS1 is composed of three components. The N‐terminal amino acid sequences of the five components were identical to the most frequently analysed sequence of LMW glutenin components.  相似文献

Four hundred and eighty one accessions of species and subspecies of genera Triticum and Aegilops were evaluated for resistance to speckled snow mold caused by Typhula ishikariensis and for freezing tolerance. All Triticum and seven of Aegilops species were severely affected by snow mold. Among surviving Aegilops spp., only the Ae. cylindrica accessions exhibited resistance similar to that of the most resistant winter wheat cultivar, PI 173438. After repeated screening of accessions of Ae. cylindrica, 12 accessions were identified as having resistance similar to that of PI 173438; eleven of those were considered more freezing tolerant than PI 173438, but less than wheat cv. Valjevskaya, the freezing tolerant check. Accessions of Ae. cylindrica with snow mold resistance exceeding that of PI 173438, and with freezing tolerance, are currently being screened. Fatty acid composition is one of the important traits in beef. The aim of this study was to identify candidate genomic regions for fatty acid composition by genome‐wide association study with 50 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array in Japanese Black cattle. A total of 461 individuals and 40 657 SNPs were used in this study. We applied genome‐wide rapid association using mixed model and regression (GRAMMAR) and genomic control approaches to estimate the associations between genotypes and fatty acid composition. In addition, two SNPs in fatty acid synthase (FASN) (T1952A) and stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) (V293A) genes were also genotyped. Association analysis revealed that 30 significant SNPs for several fatty acids (C14:0, C14:1, C16:1 and C18:1) were located in the BTA19 FASN gene located within this region but the FASN mutation had no significant effect on any traits. We also detected one significant SNP for C18:1 on BTA23 and two SNPs for C16:0 on BTA25. The region around 17 Mb on BTA26 harbored two significant SNPs for C14:1 and SNP in SCD in this region showed the strongest association with C14:1. This study demonstrated novel candidate regions in BTA19, 23 and 25 for fatty acid composition.  相似文献
