Birds living in fragmented habitat may occupy territories comprising more than one patch. This paper uses a theoretical model to investigate the costs (in terms of time and energy) of crossing gaps between patches for birds feeding young in the nest, using the great tit (Parus major) as an example. When the proportion of foraging trips involving gap-crossing was small (25%), gaps of about 300–550 m (depending on body mass and flight speed) could be crossed without exceeding likely maximum sustainable daily energy expenditure (DEEmax). However, a penalty of time lost in crossing gaps of about one hour was incurred. For more gap-crossing (due to larger brood size and/or a greater proportion of gap-crossing trips), distances that could be crossed decreased rapidly to about 50–100 m and time lost increased to more than six hours. Crossing gaps at maximum range speed, rather than at the slower minimum power speed, reduced flight times by 42% and slightly reduced overall daily energy expenditure because the higher flight costs per minute were more than off-set by the shorter flight times. Smaller body mass (17 g versus 19 g) was advantageous for gap-crossing, the distances which could be crossed without exceeding DEEmax being almost doubled for the smaller mass. The influence of changes in wing morphology, fat load and prey load size on the energetics of gap-crossing were also considered. Although the model was constructed for a woodland bird, problems of time and energy expenditure associated with gap-crossing will affect many species which exploit patchy resources, especially when the spacing of the patches increases, for example due to habitat loss and modification. In landscapes where semi-natural habitat is highly fragmented and most surviving patches are small (e.g., many farming landscapes) the costs of multiple patch use may represent another mechanism by which habitat fragmentation reduces the reproductive potential of the inhabitants of habitat patches which are of acceptable or even good quality, but are small. 相似文献

A 1.5-year-old dog was evaluated for abnormal mentation, collapse, and weight loss. Radiographs and ultrasonographs revealed soft tissue masses in the mid abdomen. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirates provided a diagnosis of malignant epithelial or round cell neoplasia. Hyperthyroidism can increase the renal excretion of magnesium and thus cause hypomagnesemia in various species. Anaerobically collected blood samples from 15 hyperthyroid and 40 normal, healthy cats were analyzed with an ion-selective electrode analyzer and a serum biochemical analyzer. There was no significant difference in ionized or total serum magnesium concentration between the 2 groups, but there was a significant difference (P = 0.004) in the ratio of ionized to total serum magnesium concentrations between the healthy cats and the hyperthyroid cats with thyroxine (T4) concentrations at or above the median. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.894, P = 0.000) between the ionized and total magnesium concentrations in the hyperthyroid cats. The hyperthyroid cats had a significantly lower (P = 0.003) total serum protein concentration than the healthy cats. A significant negative correlation (r = -0.670, P = 0.006) was detected between the ionized magnesium and logarithmically transformed total T4 concentrations in the hyperthyroid cats, which suggests that the severity of hyperthyroidism may contribute to a decrease in the ionized magnesium concentration. 相似文献

Background – Coagulase‐negative Staphylococcus lugdunensis has recently been shown to cause invasive infections of people, which are similar in pathogenic effect to those caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Little is known about the pathogenicity of S. lugdunensis in companion animals. Objectives – To compare potential risk factors for infection, body sites affected, and whether cases and controls had been treated with antimicrobial drugs based upon susceptibility test results. Animals – Thirty‐three cases of S. lugdunensis infection (25 dogs, six cats and two small mammals) were identified between January 2003 and August 2011. Two Staphylococcus pseudintermedius controls, which were identified by the microbiology laboratory immediately before and after each S. lugdunensis case, were host‐species matched to each case. Methods – A retrospective case–control analysis. Results – During the period evaluated, the prevalence of S. lugdunensis infection was 1.3 cases per 10,000 hospital admissions for dogs and 0.95 cases per 10,000 admissions for cats (P = 0.453). In univariate analyses, S. pseudintermedius isolation was significantly associated with skin infections (P < 0.0001), while S. lugdunensis isolation was associated with the respiratory tract (P = 0.03) and other deep tissues (P = 0.005). Cases were less likely than controls to have been treated based upon susceptibility test results (P = 0.02). A conditional logistic regression analysis showed isolation of S. lugdunensis to be associated with recent (≤ 30 days) steroid administration (odds ratio, 17.72; 95% confidence interval, 2.35–132.82; P = 0.005); and in‐patient status (odds ratio, 9.67; 95% confidence interval, 2.18–42.88; P = 0.003). Conclusions – These results suggest that S. lugdunensis may cause invasive infections in companion animals, which should be treated with antimicrobials based upon susceptibility tests when available. 相似文献

The effects of 2 different continuous rate infusions (CRIs) of medetomidine over an 8-hour period on sedation score, selected cardiopulmonary parameters, and serum levels of medetomidine were evaluated in 6 healthy, conscious dogs using a crossover study design. The treatment groups were: CONTROL = saline bolus followed by saline CRI; MED1 = 2 μg/kg body weight (BW) medetomidine loading dose followed by 1 μg/kg BW per hour CRI; and MED2 = 4 μg/kg BW medetomidine loading dose followed by 2 μg/kg BW per hour CRI. Sedation score (SS), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), temperature (TEMP), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), arterial and mixed venous blood gas analyses, lactate, and plasma levels of medetomidine were evaluated at baseline, at various intervals during the infusion, and 2 h after terminating the infusion. Statistical analysis involved a repeated measures linear model. Both infusion rates of medetomidine-induced dose-dependent increases in SS and dose-dependent decreases in HR, SAP, MAP, and DAP were measured. Respiratory rate (RR), TEMP, central venous pH, central venous oxygen tension, and oxygen extraction ratio also decreased significantly in the MED2 group at certain time points. Arterial oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions were not significantly affected by either infusion rate. In healthy dogs, both infusion rates of medetomidine-induced clinically relevant sedative effects, accompanied by typical alpha2 agonist-induced hemodynamic effects, which plateaued during the infusion and subsequently returned to baseline. While additional studies in unhealthy animals are required, the results presented here suggest that medetomidine infusions at the doses studied may be useful in canine patients requiring sedation for extended periods. 相似文献

There are currently no reliable immunodiagnostic tests for feline tuberculosis. Infection of domestic cats in the UK is thought to occur via their contact with the relevant reservoir of infection, e.g. cattle and badgers for Mycobacterium bovis, and rodents for M. microti. In the African National Parks, where M. bovis infection of Bovidae is an increasing problem, transmission to big cats is occurring via their ingestion of infected carcasses. We have adapted feline ELISA and ELISPOT assays to potentially provide the first cell-based diagnostic test for the detection of tuberculosis in cats. We tested peripheral blood mononuclear cell antigen-specific IFN-gamma responses of 18 cats suspected of mycobacterial infection for which biopsy material was co-submitted to the Veterinary Laboratories Agency for mycobacterial culture and identification. Seventeen cats were tested by ELISA while seven cats were tested by ELISPOT (six cats were tested by both ELISA and ELISPOT). Six healthy control cats provided baseline data for these tests. Responses to bovine and avian tuberculins (PPDB and PPDA) and a protein cocktail of ESAT6 and CFP10 were measured, together with positive mitogen (PMA and calcium ionophore) and negative (medium) controls. Overall, both ELISPOT and ELISA tests were found to be suitable for generating rapid results (2 and 4 days, respectively), which provided good predictive information for M. bovis and M. microti infections, but were unable to reliably discern M. avium infection. 相似文献

In July 2015, a cluster of five suspect cases of clinically diagnosed Mycobacterium marinum (M. marinum) skin infections were reported to the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPRDHU), Ontario, Canada, with two additional cases subsequently identified through case finding. All seven cases presented with cutaneous lesions located on the finger, hand and/or elbow regions typical of M. marinum infection. Specimens were collected by skin biopsy for two of the seven cases; both cases tested positive for M. marinum by molecular detection (hsp65 gene amplification and sequencing), and one was confirmed positive for M. marinum by culture. All seven cases reported handling raw shrimp from an aquaculture facility in the Health Unit's jurisdiction. M. marinum is not a reportable disease in Ontario, and there are no known previous reports of a cluster of M. marinum reported in Ontario, Canada. A cluster investigation working group was struck that included representation from various agencies including Public Health Ontario (PHO), Public Health Ontario Laboratories (PHOL), Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and the two health units involved in case investigations. Several public health and aquaculture farming recommendations were made to mitigate further risks associated with handling of raw shrimp from the facility. Several challenges were faced during the investigation process. The paper discusses these challenges and public health recommendations made in order to mitigate occupational and public health risks related to the hazard identified. 相似文献

Life is mostly composed of the elements carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and phosphorus. Although these six elements make up nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids and thus the bulk of living matter, it is theoretically possible that some other elements in the periodic table could serve the same functions. Here, we describe a bacterium, strain GFAJ-1 of the Halomonadaceae, isolated from Mono Lake, California, that is able to substitute arsenic for phosphorus to sustain its growth. Our data show evidence for arsenate in macromolecules that normally contain phosphate, most notably nucleic acids and proteins. Exchange of one of the major bio-elements may have profound evolutionary and geochemical importance. 相似文献
