This study assessed aspen regeneration on decking areas as affected by season of log deck building and duration of log storage;
as well as root wounding, soil compaction, and slash depth. On former decking areas that were built after a summer harvest,
aspen regeneration was 50% lower and root death 35% greater compared to former decking areas of a fall harvest. Duration of
log storage after a fall harvest had little effect on aspen regeneration; short (1.5–3 months) or long (11 months) storage
resulted in similar regeneration. Slash load was greatly increased on decking areas while root wounding and soil bulk density
were only slightly increased compared to controls. For best management practices, log storage after summer harvest should
be avoided especially when logs are kept over the growing period when suckering occurs. Additionally, removing the interwoven
mat of slash covering decking areas and limiting machine traffic to frozen soil will ensure vigorous suckering. 相似文献

Commercial tunas and billfishes (swordfish, marlins and sailfish) provide considerable catches and income in both developed and developing countries. These stocks vary in status from lightly exploited to rebuilding to severely depleted. Previous studies suggested that this variability could result from differences in life‐history characteristics and economic incentives, but differences in exploitation histories and management measures also have a strong effect on current stock status. Although the status (biomass and fishing mortality rate) of major tuna and billfish stocks is well documented, the effect of these diverse factors on current stock status and the effect of management measures in rebuilding stocks have not been analysed at the global level. Here, we show that, particularly for tunas, stocks were more depleted if they had high commercial value, were long‐lived species, had small pre‐fishing biomass and were subject to intense fishing pressure for a long time. In addition, implementing and enforcing total allowable catches (TACs) had the strongest positive influence on rebuilding overfished tuna and billfish stocks. Other control rules such as minimum size regulations or seasonal closures were also important in reducing fishing pressure, but stocks under TAC implementations showed the fastest increase of biomass. Lessons learned from this study can be applied in managing large industrial fisheries around the world. In particular, tuna regional fisheries management organizations should consider the relative effectiveness of management measures observed in this study for rebuilding depleted large pelagic stocks. 相似文献

Toxicity and anthelmintic efficacy of crude aqueous of extract of the bark of Sacoglottis gabonensis
The water extract of the stem bark of Sacoglottis gabonensis was evaluated for its preliminary acute toxicity and anthelmintic efficacy against gastro-intestinal nematodes of small ruminants and mice in both in vitro and in vivo studies. Intra-peritoneal administration of doses ranging from 400 to 3200 mg/kg of the aqueous stem bark extract produced varying degrees of toxicity manifested as depression, drowsiness and unsteady gait, paralysis of the hind limbs, dyspnoea, coma and death. The pathological lesions noted at necropsy were mainly congestion and edema of the lungs, bronchi and bronchioles and hepatomegally with focal necrosis of liver cells. The severity of the clinical symptoms and pathological lesions were dose-related. In the in vitro study, the extract significantly (P<0.05) reduced the hatching of strongyline nematode eggs from naturally infected small ruminants. The 100 mg/ml concentration of the extract produced the highest (94.4%) inhibition on nematode egg hatch and the result was comparable to similar effect produced by either levamisole (100% at 15 mg/ml) or albendazole (99.7% at 6.25 mg/ml). In rats experimentally infected with Heligmosomoides polygyrus, treatment with the S. gabonensis stem bark aqueous extract significantly (P<0.05) reduced adult worm burden and completely inhibited faecal egg output 5 days post treatment. 相似文献

Wind-induced mechanical perturbation is one of the mechanisms determining the height–diameter relationship of trees, but its effects have largely been neglected in past height–diameter models. In this study, we examined the effects of including wind speed as a regressor in the height–diameter model for lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm.). We also tested the hypothesis that the height–diameter relationship differs between trees of different crown classes (dominant and subordinate trees), and that a mixed effects height–diameter model developed at the crown class level should achieve a better prediction than that developed at the plot level. The results showed that including wind speed significantly improved the fit of the height–diameter model. The results also showed that the height–diameter relationships differ significantly between the two crown classes. The mixed effects model developed based on crown classes of individual trees had better fit with reduced residual variance and decreased Akaike's information criterion and the Schwarz's Bayesian information criterion than the plot-based mixed model. Evaluation of the developed model suggests the crown class-based height–diameter model has better prediction in terms of prediction error and precision. The developed crown class-based mixed effects model can be used to provide more accurate prediction of tree heights for lodgepole pine from their diameters. 相似文献

Survival and growth of planted white spruce was assessed under partial harvest treatments and different site preparation techniques in mixedwood forests of two compositions prior to logging: deciduous dominated (d-dom) – primarily comprised of mature trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and coniferous dominated (c-dom) – primarily comprised of mature white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss). Levels of overstory retention were 0% (clearcut), 50% and 75% of original basal area, and site preparation techniques were inverted mounding, high speed mixing, scalping and control (no treatment). The survival and growth of white spruce were assessed seven years after planting. The experiment was established as a part of the Ecosystem Management Emulating Natural Disturbance (EMEND) experiment located in northern Alberta, Canada. In the c-dom, the 50% and 75% retention of overstory resulted in reduced growth and survival of white spruce seedlings compared to clearcuts. In contrast, in the d-dom, the seedlings performed best in sites that had 50% of the overstory retained. For the c-dom, the mounding and mixing treatments yielded the best growth of spruce seedlings, while scalping yielded the worst. In the d-dom, spruce growth was highest in sites with the mixing treatment. In the d-dom, growth and survival of the planted spruce was greater than in the c-dom. The natural regeneration of deciduous trees was suppressed by the retention of canopy regardless of original composition. 相似文献

We examined 65 lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) sites in Alberta using a dendrochronological approach in order to examine the relationships between climate and growth of lodgepole pine across elevational ecoregions and diameter size classes. The 4 elevational ecoregions sampled included the Boreal Highlands (BH: 13 sites); the Foothills (FH: 36 sites); a grouping of the montane and subalpine zones of the southern Rocky Mountains (RM: 12 sites); and the montane zone of the Cypress Hills (CH: 4 sites). The first diameter size class was comprised of the three largest (top) diameter trees at each site. The tree list of each plot was ranked, then divided into three groups of equal basal area and the tree at the midpoint of each group (small, medium, and large) was selected for the other three size classes. Annual growth in basal area of lodgepole pine was generally sensitive to heat and moisture stress in late summer of the previous year, the degree of winter harshness, and the timing of the start of the growing season. Growth was inhibited by low temperature in all winter months at the most northern BH sites which had the coldest winters, but this effect was interrupted in some of the midwinter months in the more southerly sites in the RM, and we postulated this was due to the damaging influences of Chinook winds. Interannual growth patterns were strongly correlated between top diameter trees and the other classes, and trees of all diameter classes generally responded to climate in the same way, which indicated that it is sufficient to sample only the largest diameter trees in a stand to provide insight into growth–climate relationships. The forecasted growth estimates indicate that future climate warming will negatively impact the productivity of lodgepole pine in the FH, the heart of lodgepole distribution and productivity in Alberta. 相似文献

Methanolic (VPME) and chloroformic (VPCL) extracts, obtained from the aerial parts of Vernonia polyanthes, were investigated for its antiulcerogenic properties. Administration of VPME (250 mg/kg) and VPCL (50 mg/kg) significantly inhibited the gastric mucosa damage (64% and 90%, respectively) caused by absolute ethanol (p.o.). Otherwise, in NSAID-induced gastric damage, their gastroprotective effects have decreased. The phytic acid (myo-inositol hexakisphosphate or InsP6) content of seed crops is important to their nutritional quality. Since it represents 75?±?10% of the total seed phosphorus (P), phytic acid is also important regarding the management of P in agricultural production. A low-phytate F5 line, No. T-2-250-4-20, was selected from the progeny of a cross between the low-phytate soybean line CX1834 and the Japanese commercial cultivar Tanbakuro. This line and its parents were grown in a field nursery, and the growth characteristics, phytate accumulation, and processing suitability for tofu were evaluated. At full maturity, the weight of seeds per plant of line T-2-250-4-20 was 5.2- and 1.3-fold higher than that of CX1834 and Tanbakuro, respectively. The amount of phytate-phosphorus as a percentage of the total P content in seeds was 23% in line T-2-250-4-20-34, 30% in CX1834, and 69% in Tanbakuro. No significant difference was observed among the three cultivars/lines in their seed magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), crude protein, and sugar. However, the calcium (Ca), crude fat and ash contents in seeds of line T-2-250-4-20-34 and Tanbakuro was lowered compared to that of CX1834. The breaking stress of tofu was estimated employing a rheometer with a decreasing concentration of the coagulant magnesium chloride (MgCl2), starting at 15.7?mmol?L?1. In tofu made from Tanbakuro, the concentration of MgCl2 required to achieve the maximum breaking stress was 12.6?mmol?L?1; however, it was 9.5?mmol?L?1 for tofu made from T-2-250-4-20-34 and CX1834. The tofu made from Tanbakuro was soft and broke at 6.3?mmol?L?1 MgCl2, but, in line T-2-250-4-20-34, harder tofu was made with lower MgCl2 concentrations. No difference was observed among the cultivars/lines in the SDS-PAGE patterns of protein in soymilk. These results indicate that we have developed a low-phytate soybean with adequate productivity, and confirmed that tofu made from the low-phytate T-2-250-4-20-34 soybean becomes coagulated and harder at a lower MgCl2 concentration than that from high-phytate soybean cultivars. 相似文献

It is unclear to what extent and on which variables does supplementing beef cattle on native grasslands affect sward structure, specifically on the dynamics of its grazing horizons. Three hypotheses were tested: (i) during a grazing down process under similar forage allowance, supplemented animals take longer to finish each grazing stratum, than their unsupplemented counterparts, (ii) in both cases, the upper stratum will be heavily depleted before the subsequent strata are grazed, (iii) some species and/or forage fractions are consumed faster than others, regardless of the animals being supplemented (corn dried distillers grains with solubles, DDGS, at 0.7% of their body weight, BW, on a dry matter, DM, basis) or not. Three blocks of stockpiled native grasslands were used and split into two treatments plots (n = 6), on which either supplemented (S) or control (C) heifers of 10.6 ± 0.6 months of age and an initial BW of 143 ± 9 kg, were used. A 2.5 × 0.5 m observation grid was installed on the sward, generating 384 observation points on each plot. On these observation plots, sward height (SH) and visually assessed green forage mass percentage (%G) were registered every other day for 12 consecutive days. No differences were found between the horizontal grazing dynamics between supplemented and control animals in terms of how they switched from the upper grazing horizon to the successive ones. In both cases, when the upper grazing horizon was heavily depleted, the subsequent horizon was being depleted by its half. Differences of preference for C3 species over C4 was observed for both treatments, but this effect was more meaningful for control animals. Grazing time never fully compensated for the decline in intake rate during depletion throughout the grazing horizons. Pasture intake declined when the animals transition from grazing the top grazing horizons to the lower horizons, irrespective of the level of supplementation. Managing the sward structure in terms of sward height will be beneficial to maximizing individual animal performance, for both C and S animals. Native grasslands paddocks with a greater C3 gasses predominance will always be preferred to C4 dominated paddocks, regardless of an eventual supplementation practice. 相似文献
