To clarify relationships between year‐class strength and larval growth of walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus), and oceanographic conditions in the Pacific stock off Hokkaido and Tohoku, Japan, we undertook conductivity/temperature/depth (CTD) observations and investigated larval densities, larval otolith increment widths and larval prey densities (of copepod nauplii) of the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 yr classes in Funka Bay. Oyashio Coastal Water (OCW) flowed into the bay in late February in 2008, 2010 and 2011, and the mean water temperatures decreased to 1.9–3.1 °C in March. OCW was not observed in 2009, and it was warm in late February (≥3.4 °C). Increment widths of lapillar otoliths during the yolk‐sac stage were wide in 2009 and 2011, medium in 2010 and narrow in 2008. Increment widths during the first‐feeding stage tended to become wider as the hatch month progressed, and the annual variation during the first‐feeding stage was larger than that of the yolk‐sac stage. The densities of the primary food for the larvae were high in 2008 when larval increment widths were narrowest, so the effect of prey abundance on larval growth appeared to be small. The ranking of the larval abundance in March was nearly coincident with that of the increment width during the larval stage. We, therefore, suggest that the larval growth rate is associated with the mortality rate and that the growth–mortality hypothesis may be applicable to walleye pollock in Funka Bay. Feeding success under warm water conditions may be an important factor that contributes towards high growth rates.  相似文献

To develop a simple and reliable method to identify sweetpotato cultivars, we designed cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS)-based markers and used them to perform genotyping of Japanese sweetpotato cultivars. In order to screen the CAPS-based markers, 13 primer pairs were designed from the exon sequences of 11 sweetpotato genes to amplify fragments containing an intron. By digesting the amplified products with 8 restriction enzymes having different recognition sites, a total of 27 polymorphic marker fragments were obtained. Genotyping of 60 Japanese sweetpotato cultivars using these markers suggested that the markers can effectively distinguish sweetpotato cultivars. Among the genes used for primer design, the gene encoding the dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR) showed the largest degree of polymorphism. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the development of CAPS-based markers in sweetpotato.  相似文献

A new abietane diterpenoid, 12-O-methyl carnosol (2), was isolated from the leaves of sage (Salvia officinalis L.), together with 11 abietane diterpenoids, 3 apianane terpenoids, 1 anthraquinone, and 8 flavonoids. Antioxidant activity of these compounds along with 4 flavonoids isolated from thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) was evaluated by the oil stability index method using a model substrate oil including methyl linoleate in silicone oil at 90 degrees C. Carnosol, rosmanol, epirosmanol, isorosmanol, galdosol, and carnosic acid exhibited remarkably strong activity, which was comparable to that of alpha-tocopherol. The activity of miltirone, atuntzensin A, luteolin, 7-O-methyl luteolin, and eupafolin was comparable to that of butylated hydroxytoluene. The activity of these compounds was mainly due to the presence of ortho-dihydroxy groups. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity of these compounds showed the similar result.  相似文献

Abstract

The population density of endophytic bacteria in the stem of field-grown sweet potato cultivars (Beniotome [BO], Koganesengan [KS], and Shiroyutaka [SYD in Miyakonojo, Miyazaki, Japan, ranged from 102 to 104 cells g?1 fresh weight sample using a semi-solid nitrogen-free medium. Eleven strains were isolated from the stems and two isolates, BO-1 and BO-5, showed a positive reaction in the acetylene reduction activity (ARA) test. BO-1 and BO-5 were isolated from cv. Beniotome in September 1999 and 2000, respectively. Morpho-physiological characterization of these isolates revealed that BO-1 and BO-5 showed a similar colony color in potato sucrose agar slants, produced bubbles in a modified semi-solid medium, acidified the medium, and displayed similar characteristics using the API 20NE rapid diagnostic kit. Partial sequence analysis of 16S rRNA from BO-1 revealed a 100% similarity (491 bp) to that of Klebsiella oxytoca. The other 9 isolates showed a negative reaction in the ARA test, slightly acidified or did not acidify the medium. Partial sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA revealed that the isolate SY-2 corresponded to Methylobacterium sp. (99.3% similarity for 1,241 bp), BO-3 to Pantoea agglomerans (99.1% similarity for 469 bp), and BO-8 to Sphingomonas sanguinis (98.8% similarity for 419 bp).  相似文献

Community forest management (CFM) has received increasing worldwide attention from governments, researchers and educational institutions over the past two decades. Many governments, especially in developing countries, have prioritized CFM over traditional forest management systems. In Thailand, CFM is not recognized by the legal system; however, there are de facto CFM practices under common property resource regimes. CFM has in essence been practiced here for hundreds of years by local people, and represents an important aspect of Thai culture. This study aims at evaluating CFM in Thailand in the context of sustainable development. To meet the objective, the study gathered information through focus group discussions with various stakeholders: academics, Forest Department staff, and members of the Chang Tok Tay community forests. From the study, it emerged that forest resources are critical for the livelihoods and survival of rural people, and so they have protected forests to ensure sustainable livelihoods. This study identified that prospects for sustainable CFM in Thailand are bright because: (i) community members are highly motivated and are sufficiently interested to protect trees because they are well aware that their livelihoods are under threat from depleting forests; (ii) tradition and culture of rural people support their relation with nature; (iii) non-timber forest products (NTFPs) play a crucial role in local livelihoods for subsistence and necessitate protection of the forest watershed, which is vital to support their occupations; (iv) spiritual rituals such as those where Buddhist monks bind yellow cloth on trees play a vital role in protecting trees, something rare in other countries. The study further identified various hindrances to achieve sustainable CFM: (i) legal support for CFM is absent; (ii) the Royal Forest Department (RFD) cannot transfer appropriate technology to community people due to lack of legal support; (iii) scope for developing effective strategies for sustainable CFM by combining traditional knowledge with existing scientific knowledge is limited; (iv) a formal institutional arrangement for CFM does not exist; and (v) community members’ access to the hard technology of CFM is limited. Therefore, in addition to legalizing CFM, a formal institutional framework for elaboration, implementation and control of CFM is essential to achieve sustainable CFM in Thailand.  相似文献

Swine slurry is a common agricultural fertilizer in many countries. However, its long‐term use in large amounts can cause excess nutrient accumulation, alter soil compounds, and potentially influence critical microbial populations such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, which have important roles in plant nutrition and soil sustainability. This work determined if arbuscular mycorrhizal status, external mycelium, and glomalin‐related soil protein content were affected by long‐term swine slurry application to different soil tillage systems. The experiment was conducted on a clayey oxisol, in southern Brazil. Swine slurry (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 m3 ha−1 y−1) was applied for 15 years to conventional tillage and no tillage soil prior to the summer (soybean or maize) and winter (wheat or oats) crop seasons. Swine slurry decreased mycorrhizal root colonization, spore number, and total external mycelium. Swine slurry increased active external mycelium and both easily extractable and total glomalin‐related soil protein. No‐tillage soil had more glomalin‐related soil protein than conventional tillage soil. The most significant response variables were root colonization, easily extractable glomalin‐related soil protein, and total external arbuscular mycorrhizal mycelia. Long‐term application of swine slurry in this environment, even at high rates, did not adversely affect crop yield but did influence arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi and their products in the soil environment. Benefits of swine slurry application for crop nutrition must be weighed against potential adverse consequences for the size, activity, and benefits of the mycorrhizal community to subsequent annual crops. The antioxidative properties of the leaves extracts of Murraya koenigii using different solvents were evaluated based on the oil stability index (OSI) together with their radical scavenging ability against 1-1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The methylene chloride (CH(2)Cl(2)) extract and the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) soluble fraction of the 70% acetone extract significantly prolonged the OSI values comparable to those of alpha-tocopherol and BHT. Five carbazole alkaloids were isolated from the CH(2)Cl(2) extract and their structures were identified to be euchrestine B (1), bismurrayafoline E (2), mahanine (3), mahanimbicine (4), and mahanimbine (5) based on (1)H and (13)C NMR and mass (MS) spectral data. The OSI value of carbazoles at 110 degrees C decreased in the order 1 and 3 > alpha-tocopherol > BHT > 2 > 4, 5 and control. It is assumed that compounds 1 and 3 contributed to the high OSI value of the CH(2)Cl(2) extract of M. koenigii. The DPPH radical scavenging activity for these carbazoles was in the order ascorbic acid > 2 > 1, 3 and alpha-tocopherol > BHT > 4 and 5.  相似文献

Seventeen compounds were isolated from the n-butanol soluble fraction of the leaves of Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. On the basis of MS and various NMR spectroscopic techniques, the structures of the isolated compounds were determined as isoquercitrin (1), rutin (2), 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid (3), 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid (4), 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5), cnidioside A (6), praeroside II (7), praeroside III (8), apterin (9), esculin (10), (R)-peucedanol (11), (R)-peucedanol 7-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside (12), l-tryptophan (13), uracil (14), guanosine (15), uridine (16), and thymidine (17). All compounds except 11 and 12 were isolated for the first time from P. japonicum. Several isolated compounds were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. In addition, all isolated compounds were examined for radical scavenging on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical and for inhibition of oxidation of liposome induced by 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride. Compounds 2-5 were found to be the major potent constituents, which contribute to the antioxidant activity of P. japonicum leaves.  相似文献

Overfishing can affect life history traits, resulting in population collapse and oftentimes a decrease in length-at-age and maturation size in fish populations. However, little is known about the recovery mechanisms and time scales of these traits in exploited wild populations. In the study reported here, we documented long-term shifts in growth and mature size in Miyabe charr Salvelinus malma miyabei associated with a history of recreational fishing in Lake Shikaribetsu for approximately 80 years. Downsizing in the charr was observed when the charr population collapsed due to intensive recreational fishing. However, subsequent moratoriums and the introduction of fishing regulations, especially the implementation of a catch-and-release policy, during the following 10–30 years facilitated the recovery of population size, length-at-age and mature fish size. This study provides important insights into the biological changes and required recovery time scales of a heavily harvested population and supports management and conservation strategies.  相似文献
