In many European warmblood studbooks, clear specialization toward either jumping or dressage horses is evident. The Swedish Warmblood (SWB) is also undergoing such specialization, creating a possible need for separate breeding programs and a discipline-specific Young Horse Test (YHT). This study investigated how far specialization of the SWB breed has proceeded and the potential consequences. Individuals in a population of 122,054 SWB horses born between 1980 and 2020 were categorized according to pedigree as jumping (J), dressage (D), allround (AR), or thoroughbred (Th). Data on 8,713 J horses and 6,477 D horses assessed for eight traits in YHT 1999–2020 were used to estimate genetic parameters within and between J and D horses and between different periods. Future scenarios in which young horses are assessed for either jumping or dressage traits at YHT were also analyzed. More than 80% of horses born in 1980–1985 were found to be AR horses, while 92% of horses born in 2016–2020 belonged to a specialized category. The average relationship within J or D category was found to increase during the past decade, whereas the relationship between these categories decreased. Heritability estimates for gait traits were 0.42–0.56 for D horses and 0.25–0.38 for J horses. For jumping traits, heritability estimates were 0.17–0.26 for J horses and 0.10–0.18 for D horses. Genetic correlations between corresponding traits assessed in J and D horses were within the range 0.48–0.81, with a tendency to be lower in the late study period. In the future scenarios, heritability and genetic variance both decreased for traits that were not assessed in all horses, indicating that estimation of breeding value and genetic progress for these traits could be affected by a specialized YHT. However, ranking of sires based on estimated breeding values (EBVs) and accuracy of EBVs was only slightly altered for discipline-specific traits. With continued specialization in SWB, specialization of the YHT should thus be considered.  相似文献

This study tested and compared different implementation strategies for genomic selection for Norwegian White Sheep, aiming to increase genetic gain for maternal traits. These strategies were evaluated for their genetic gain ingrowth, carcass and maternal traits, total genetic gain, a weighted sum of the gain in each trait and rates of inbreeding through a full-scale stochastic simulation. Results showed genomic selection schemes to increase genetic gain for maternal traits but reduced genetic gain for other traits. This could also be obtained by selecting rams for artificial selection at a higher age. Implementation of genomic selection in the current breeding structure increased genetic gain for maternal traits up to 57%, outcompeted by reducing the generation interval for artificial insemination rams from current 3 to 2 years. Then, total genetic gain for maternal traits increased by 65%–77% and total genetic gain by18%–20%, but at increased rates of inbreeding.  相似文献

Duplicate groups of 1-year-old Atlantic salmon were exposed to 5–7 weeks of short days (LD 8.15:15.45) with artificial light, followed by a period of continuous light (LL) for 3 months (A), 2 months (B) or 1 month (C) before transfer to sea cages. Duplicate groups were also exposed to a 2-week period of LD 8.15:15.45, followed by a period of continuous light for 2 months (D). Comparisons were made with fish that were reared under natural light conditions from October onwards (F) and continuous light (E) only. Fish from all groups were transferred to sea cages on 9 June and their survival and growth were monitored until 31 October. There was a significant (P < 0.001) interaction between light regime and time for all smolt characters measured. Development of smolt colouration, decrease in condition factor, increases in gill Na-K-ATPase activity and the ability to regulate plasma Na+ after 24 h in full-strength sea water, indicated that the fish in groups A, B and C completed smoltification 6–8 weeks after the end of the short-day periods. No decrease in the condition factor was recorded for fish in groups D and E. The mortality was 40% for group A and 34% for group B, and 15% or less for the other groups. Groups A and B had probably lost some of the smolt characters by the time of seawater transfer. The specific growth rate in sea water was 1.5% for group F and for the survivors of groups A and B, 1.4% for group C and 1.2% for groups D and E. In conclusion, a short-day regime of 5–7 weeks, followed by continuous artificial light, caused smolt-related changes similar to those found in outdoor-reared fish, whereas this was not so for fish exposed to either a short-day period of only 2 weeks or to continuous artificial light.  相似文献

In the present paper are described the growth properties of three different haemoglobin genotypes of juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) reared at 7, 10, 13 and 16 °C. In addition one group was reared under temperature steps i.e. moved successively from 16 to 13 and 10 °C. The genotype Hb-I(2/2)displayed the overall highest growth rate in the temperature range 13–16 °C, whereas the Hb- I(1/1)genotype showed the highest overall growth at the lowest temperature (7 °C). Accordingly, we found a significant interaction between genotype and temperature. The differences in growth were largest when cod were reared under the temperature step regime where the Hb-I(2/2)genotype displayed 17 and 24% higher growth than Hb-I(1/1)and Hb-I(1/2),respectively. Optimal temperature for growth (Topt.G) varied between the genotypes with the genotype Hb-I(1/2)displaying the highest (mean ± SE) Topt.G (14.5 ± 1:0.8 °C) and Hb-I(1/1)the lowest (12.5 ± 0.2 °C). The biological significance of this link between biochemical genetic variation and physiological properties might be the influences on growth pattern, ultimate size and age at first maturity.  相似文献

The effect of size and acclimation period to full-strength sea water was investigated using the mortality, growth, chloride cell proliferation and plasma Na concentration in four size groups (0.03-1.6 g mean initial weight) of mixed-parentage, sex-reversed, all-male fry and fingerlings of Oreochromis spilurus spilurus Günter obtained from University of Stirling. The fish were transferred from fresh water to sea water (36.6%0) through a continuous salinity increase during a 48, 72 or 120 h acclimation period. Survival was high in all groups, although the smallest fish (0.03 g) showed significantly higher mortality than the larger fish. The acclimation regime had no effect on growth rate, but 120 h acclimation gave highest final weight in the newly released group. Regardless of acclimation period, size and plasma Na concentration during the acclimation period, the plasma Na level stabilized within 12 h after full salinity in the two largest size groups. Ovoid voluminous chloride cells proliferated in all groups during the acclimation period, and numbers stabilized with stable salinity. It is concluded in this study that O. spilurus spilurus can successfully be acclimated to sea water with a gradual continuous acclimation period of 48 h, even as newly released fry (0.03 g). However, an acclimation period of 120 h gave the highest final weight for this size group.  相似文献

Trehalose-negative strains of the Pasteurella haemolytica complex have recently been transferred to a new genus, Mannheimia. This genus presently consists of five named species: M. haemolytica, M. glucosida, M. granulomatis, M. ruminalis and M. varigena. The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of these species and lesions associated with these isolates in Denmark. In all 106 M. haemolytica-like strains isolated from pathological material from cattle, sheep, pigs and hares submitted to the Danish Veterinary Laboratory between 1994 and 1998 were investigated. Phenotypic characterization and ribotyping were used for identification in addition to sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes for selected strains. The species allocation was determined by comparison to results from a previous polyphasic taxonomic study. Seventy-one percent of the strains belonged to M. haemolytica, 18% to M. varigena and 8% to unnamed groups within the genus Mannheimia. Single isolates identified as M. glucosida and P. trehalosi, respectively, were detected. Two isolates belonged to M. granulomatis. Forty-three percent of the strains belonged to serotype 1, 41% were untypeable, while the rest belonged to serotypes 2, 7, 9, and 16. The present investigation also showed that a simplified phenotypic characterization using Diatabs Diagnostic Tablets (Rosco, Denmark) represents a useful method for obtaining a quick and reliable species identification. Finally, the investigation confirmed that serotyping does not represent a reliable method for species identification. The heterogeneity of species associated with bovine "pasteurellosis" should be considered in future studies to improve our understanding of the pathogenesis of pneumonic disease.  相似文献

Adult rainbow trout which were fed a diet devoid of ascorbic acid for 21 months, including the stages of gonadal development, showed no macroscopic signs of avitaminosis C and no increased mortality compared to a control group of fish with dietary supplementation of this vitamin. Fish without dietary supplementation of ascorbic acid contained more lipid in the liver and less in the ovaries than the reference fish. The lipid metabolism of the maturing fish is thus affected when the dietary intake of ascorbic acid is very low or absent. Fish without dietary ascorbic acid became anaemic (reduced levels of haemoglobin and haematocrit) towards the end of the feeding period. The serum levels of oestradiol-17β and vitellogenin were also lower in these fish. Possible modes of action of ascorbic acid in maturing rainbow trout are discussed on the basis of the presented analytical data on ascorbic acid, gross composition, blood serum levels of oestradiol-17β, vitellogenin, total protein, albumin, cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus and haematological parameters.  相似文献
