In forested wetlands, hydrology exerts complex and sometimes compensatory influences on tree growth. This is particularly true in semi-arid ecosystems, where water can be both a limiting resource and a stressor. To better understand these relationships, we studied hydrologic and edaphic controls on the density, growth, tree architecture and overall productivity of forested wetlands dominated by the tree species Alnus glutinosa and Salix atrocinerea in Southern Europe. We sampled 49 plots set within 21 stands in the Atlantic coastal zone of the Iberian Peninsula, and quantified woody composition, size structure (diameter and height), and radial growth using dendrochronology. Plots were grouped into three saturation classes to compare tree growth characteristics (tree density, degree of sprouting, live basal area and productivity) across levels of saturation. We used Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to create integrated explanatory factors of hydrology, soil nutrient status and soil texture for use in linear mixed models to predict stand characteristics. Increased site saturation favoured a shift in species dominance from Alnus to Salix and resulted in a higher degree of multi-stemmed tree architecture (‘shrubbiness’), particularly for Alnus. Radial growth was negatively correlated with long-term soil saturation; however, annual productivity on a per-tree basis varied by species. Alnus growth and tree density were negatively correlated with waterlogging and fine-textured soils, possibly due to anaerobiosis in the rooting zone. In contrast, Salix growth was more influenced by nutrient limitation. Overall site productivity as measured by annual basal area increment decreased with prolonged saturation. In summary, soil saturation appears to act as a chronic stressor for tree species in this ecosystem. However, these species persist and maintain a dominant canopy position in the most permanently flooded patches through increased sprouting, albeit at a reduced rate of overall biomass accumulation relative to well-drained sites. The diversity in functional responses among wetland forest species has important implications for the conservation and management of these ecosystems. The sustainable management of these ecosystems is directly tied to their vulnerability to changing hydrological conditions. Non-equilibrium modifications to the hydrologic regime from land use and climate change, which are particularly severe in semi-arid regions, may further decrease productivity, integrity and resilience in these stress-adapted communities.  相似文献

Seed predation and dispersal are key processes in the survival and distribution of plant species. Many animals cache seeds for later consumption, and, failing to recover some of these seeds, act as seed dispersers, influencing post-dispersal seed and seedling survival. Both animal and plant benefit from scatterhoarding and natural selection of seed characteristics and adaptations of seed predators (and dispersers) is one of the most important examples of co-evolution and mutualism. We studied the producer–consumer Arolla pine (Pinus cembra)–red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) system in a subalpine forest in the Italian Alps. Arolla pine produced large seed-crops (masting) at irregular intervals, followed by years with poor or moderate seed production. Squirrel density fluctuated in synchrony with the food resource, eliminating the time-lag normally present when resources are produced in pulses. In all years except 2009 (a mast-crop year), all Arolla pine cones were harvested (their seeds consumed and/or cached) by September to late October by different species. Both squirrels and nutcrackers (Nucifraga caryocatactes) fed on seeds, and their relative pre-dispersal predation rates (on cones in the canopy) differed between years. Overall, nutcrackers consumed more seeds between July and October than squirrels, but in 1 year squirrels took the largest number of seeds. Pre-dispersal seed predation by squirrels tended to be lower in years with large seed-crop size and there was a positive correlation, over the entire study period, between density of recovered hoards and Arolla pine seed density of the previous year. We conclude that (i) squirrels and nutcrackers are important pre-dispersal seed predators and seeds dispersers; (ii) squirrels are also post-dispersal seed predators, and (iii) the proportion of cached seeds consumed by squirrels increased with the size of the Arolla pine seed-crop, suggesting that red squirrel is a conditional mutualistic scatterhoarder of Arolla pine seeds.  相似文献

Doubled haploid (DH) production is valuable technology in modern plant breeding of oilseed rape. Doubled haploids can be produced from in vitro isolated and cultured microspores, which, instead of forming pollen, develop into haploid embryos. Either spontaneously or after artificial doubling of chromosomes, the arising resulting plants are diploid and fertile, and 100% homozygous for all genes. Biotechnological DH production offers various advantages for plant breeders, including the possibility to obtain homozygous lines rapidly, as well as easy selection due to the absence of heterozygosity. A DH line with desirable agronomic characters can be chosen and introduced into a breeding program as a result of selection for a combination of optimum characters. The study presents the application of uni- and multi-variate statistical methods to evaluate winter oilseed rape DH lines studied in a series of six experiments repeated at different localities and over a number of years. These methods made it possible to estimate individual DH lines under various environmental conditions, including the assessment of the content and stability of two different fatty acid compositions. The aim of the study was to classify and select the best oilseed rape genotypes with regard to the requirements of chemical and biodiesel industry concerning fatty acid compositions at simultaneously high seed yield. The paper contains the results of statistical analysis of 37 genotypes (32 DH lines, 2 parental forms, F2 and F3 hybrids and standard cultivar) performed on the basis of experiments carried out at 6 environments. A total of 14 genotypes were found satisfactory (11 stable and 3 unstable) for the chemical industry and 10 genotypes satisfactory (6 stable and 4 unstable) for the biodiesel industry. Among them 5 genotypes had very profitable significant and positive estimates of the main effect for seed yield.  相似文献

Yield decline is a major constraint in the adoption of monocropping of aerobic rice. The causes of the yield decline in the continuous aerobic rice system are still unknown. The objective of this study was to determine if nutrient application can mitigate the yield decline caused by continuous cropping of aerobic rice. Micro-plot experiment was conducted in 2005 dry season (DS) in a field where aerobic rice has been grown continuously for eight seasons from 2001 DS at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) farm. Pot experiments were done with the soil from the same field where the micro-plot experiment was conducted and aerobic rice has been grown continuously for 10 seasons. Apo, an upland rice variety, was grown under aerobic conditions with different nutrient inputs in field and pot experiments. The field micro-plot experiment showed that micronutrients had insignificant effect on plant growth under continuous aerobic rice cultivation but the combination of N, P, and K mitigated the yield decline of continuous aerobic rice. A series of pot experiments studying the individual effects of nutrients indicated that N application improved plant growth under continuous aerobic rice cropping, while P, K, and micronutrients had no effect. Increasing the rate of N application from 0.23 to 0.90 g per pot in the continuous aerobic rice soil increased the vegetative growth parameters, chlorophyll meter readings, and aboveground N uptake consistently. Our results suggested that N deficiency due to poor soil N availability or reduced plant N uptake might cause the yield decline of continuous cropping of aerobic rice.  相似文献

The use of two new ligands, (1Z)-1-(4-aminophenyl) ethan-1-one semicarbazone (L1) and (1Z)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)ethan-1-one semicarbazone (L2), was evaluated for their potential use as chelators in increasing phytoremediation effectiveness. The uptake of heavy metals by Teddy Bear sunflowers increased when L1 added at 0.1 and 0.3 g/kg. Metal uptake selectivity was Cr > Ni ? Cd for each treatment. The 0.1-g/kg L1 ligands produced a significant uptake of metals in Sundance sunflowers. The 0.3-g/kg L1 level increased the metal uptake, but it was lower than 0.1-g/kg L1 treatment. The uptake selectivity with L2 ligand was Cr > Ni > Cd, with the majority of metals retained in the roots. L1 ligand was better compared in comparison to L2 ligand for enhancing uptake of metals.  相似文献

We evaluated the in situ net nitrogen (N) mineralization in a soil cropped to maize and fertilized for 11 years with cattle slurry or farmyard manure, both common on livestock farms of the Po River valley in Northern Italy. The net N mineralization of the tilled soil layer was measured in six consecutive incubation periods after manure application, for a total of 12 weeks, using the polyethylene buried bags technique. Results showed that net N mineralization was followed by N immobilization and finally, by mineralization whose rate increase until maize flowering. On average, net N mineralization was 70.4 kg N ha−1, with the majority being released during the last measurement period. The time and extent of net N mineralization and plant N uptakes were not affected by fresh manure application. Instead, the effect of past management increased the maximum net N mineralization rate obtained with farmyard manure. The buried bag technique probably underestimates the total amount of mineralized N available for crop growth because it excludes the presence of the plant.  相似文献

A 13-year-old neutered male miniature dachshund suffered ~30% total skin loss following an attack by another dog. After numerous failed attempts at wound management and closure, the wound was successfully healed by epithelialization using tilapia skin grafts. At each tilapia skin graft placement, the wound bed appeared pink, clean, and healthy with excellent progression of epithelialization at all edges. With use of the tilapia grafts, epithelialization occurred at a rate of 1.76 mm/day. As a result, the wound reached complete closure by epithelialization with no evidence of wound contracture in 102 days.Key clinical message:Tilapia skin grafts were successfully used for management of a large bite wound in a dog and may promote accelerated epithelialization in full thickness skin wounds.  相似文献

The distribution of Anisakis larvae in fresh caught hake was studied, and the influence of three infection levels of the viscera (low, medium, high) on quality changes of deep frozen muscle was followed over 220 days. Differences in quality were attributed more to the size of the individuals than to the infection degree of the three groups. The removal of belly flaps diminished the risk of consumers’ infection and sensitization as prevalence and intensity was reduced to 75.6 and 5.9%, respectively. Allergens were detected after 220 days frozen storage, which represents a risk for consumers already allergic to Anisakis.  相似文献

Glycolipids were extracted from the red alga Osmundaria obtusiloba from Southeastern Brazilian coast. The acetone insoluble material was extracted with chloroform/methanol and the lipids, enriched in glycolipids, were fractionated on a silica gel column eluted with chloroform, acetone and then methanol. Three major orcinol-positive bands were found in the acetone and methanol fractions, being detected by thin layer chromatography. The structures of the corresponding glycolipids were elucidated by ESI-MS and (1)H/(13)C NMR analysis, on the basis of their tandem-MS behavior and HSQC, TOCSY fingerprints. For the first time, the structure of sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol from the red alga Osmundaria obtusiloba was characterized. This molecule exhibited potent antiviral activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2 with EC(50) values of 42 μg/mL to HSV-1 and 12 μg/mL to HSV-2, respectively. Two other glycolipids, mono- and digalactosyldiacylglycerol, were also found in the alga, being characterized by ESI-MS/MS. The structural elucidation of algae glycolipids is a first step for a better understanding of the relation between these structures and their biological activities.  相似文献

Abstract Because of the morphological and morphometric variation of testicular follicles in different genera of the subfamily Triatominae, it was of interest to associate those parameters with the different medial pronotal band patterns (wide and narrow) found in Rhodnius brethesi (Matta) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae). This is a wild species often associated with Leopoldina piassaba Wallace (Arecales: Arecaceae) palm, with a geographical distribution restricted to the Amazon region. The specimens used were from the state of Amazonas, and were kept under conditions of 29 ± 1 (°)C, 80 ± 5% RH, 12:12 L:D photoperiod, and were fed weekly on blood from Swiss mice. Three-day-old fasting males were separated in accordance with the patterns of the medial pronotal band, dissected, and the testicles removed. After removal of the testicular membrane, the follicles were spread, drawn by camera lucida, and measured. The results showed that the testis of R. brethesi consists of seven follicles, divided into two groups by length; two long and five short. In specimens with a wide medial pronotal band, the long follicles were 5.4 mm in length, but in specimens with a narrow medial band, the long follicles were 5.64 mm in length. The difference was significant. The short follicles were not different in length, suggesting the presence of a possible complex "brethesi" in the Amazon region.  相似文献
