The present study examined the effect of excessive application of farmyard manure (FM) on rice production and environmental pollution in paddy fields of Japan. A long-term field experiment was conducted during the period 1976–2006 to examine the trends of rice yield and yield components as affected by the excessive FM application (20 Mg ha?1 year?1 containing 110 kg N, 180 kg P2O5, and 320 kg K2O). Rice growth, soil fertility, and surface water quality were also assessed in the final year (2006). The results obtained were compared with those of a conventional practice with recommended doses of inorganic fertilizer (IF), i.e. 85 kg N, 68 kg P2O5, and 53 kg K2O ha?1 year?1, and an unfertilized control (CR). The excessive FM application resulted in a gradual decrease in grain yield, which was mostly explained by the reduction of grain fertility under the luxuriant rice growth. This reduction may have been due to the higher accumulation of soil nutrients such as N, P, and K. Moreover, the excessive FM application increased chemical oxygen demand, total P, and soluble K concentrations in the paddy surface water and their effluent loads compared to the conventional practice with the recommended IF application.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide, on acceleration of healing of experimental cartilage injury in a rabbit model. An injured cartilage model was surgically created by introduction of three holes, one in the articular cartilage of the medial trochlea and two in the trochlear sulcus of the distal femur. Rabbits in three experimental groups (F groups) were orally administered fucoidan of seven different molecular weights (8, 50, 146, 239, 330, 400, or 1000 kD) for 3 weeks by screening. Control (C group) rabbits were provided water ad libitum. After the experimental period, macroscopic examination showed that the degree of filling in the fucoidan group was higher than that in the C group. Histologically, the holes were filled by collagen fiber and fibroblasts in the C group, and by chondroblasts and fibroblasts in the F groups. Image analysis of Alcian blue- and safranin O-stained F-group specimens showed increased production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans (PGs), respectively. Some injured holes were well repaired both macroscopically and microscopically and were filled with cartilage tissues; cartilage matrices such as PGs and GAGs were produced in groups F 50, F 146, and F 239. Thus, fucoidan administration enhanced morphologically healing of cartilage injury.  相似文献

High mortality of hatchery-reared Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT) juveniles is frequently observed in sea cages after transfer from indoor tanks, and is likely due to collisions of the fish with the net wall of the sea cages. Because collisions frequently cause bone injuries due to physical impact, such injuries can be considered an index of obvious collisions. In the present study, bone injuries of dead juveniles were investigated in order to examine the prevalence of net collision as a cause of death among hatchery-reared PBT juveniles in sea cages. Juvenile PBT were reared in sea cages for 90 days after transfer, and dead fish were collected and examined by the clearing and staining method or by dissection to detect injury to the vertebral column and parasphenoid. The prevalence of injuries to the vertebral column and parasphenoid until day 30 after transfer was low (0.0–12.0 %) when the fish were 5.5–15.2 cm in total length (TL). However, it drastically increased to 17.8–78.0 % for fish 21.0–39.2 cm TL from day 31 onward after transfer. These results suggest that the mortalities of juvenile PBT larger than 20 cm TL in cages were induced by net collisions.  相似文献

The possible recovery of a white-spotted charr population in a small tributary of a river to Lake Biwa, following removal of previously stocked red-spotted masu salmon, was investigated by electrofishing. We captured 30 red-spotted masu salmon and two hybrids of these two species in 2014. Prior to the stocking of red-spotted masu salmon, the estimated number of white-spotted charr?≥?100 mm standard length (SL) in the tributary was more than 200 individuals in 2005, which had reduced to fewer than 30 individuals by 2014 when 30 red-spotted masu salmon plus two charr/masu salmon hybrids were captured. However, no red-spotted masu salmon were captured from 2015 to 2017, indicating the success of a red-spotted masu salmon removal program. The estimated number of white-spotted charr?≥?100 mm SL ranged from 25 to 91 individuals between 2015 and 2017, implying a great reduction of red-spotted masu. The estimated population size of the former increased further to 171–221 individuals in 2021, comparable to 2005. These results suggest that the white-spotted charr population declined due to stocking of red-spotted masu salmon, and recovered following removal of the latter.

Gmelina arborea Roxb. is a fast-growing species and is known to have been used in traditional Indian medicine. Chemical constituents from the bark have not been reported, although some chemical constituents from part of this plant (heartwood, leaf, and root) are known. In this study, the bark meal was successively extracted with acetone and methanol. Fractionation of the acetone extract with n-hexane, diethyl ether, and ethyl acetate and subsequent chromatographic separation of the fractions led to the isolation of four compounds. The diethyl ether-soluble fraction yielded tyrosol [2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethanol] (1); (+)-balanophonin (2), an 8-5′ neolignan, with opposite optical rotation to known (−)-balanophonin; and gmelinol (3), a known lignan. The ethyl acetate-soluble fraction afforded a new phenylethanoid glycoside to the best of our knowledge, which was identified as (−)-p-hydroxyphenylethyl[5′″-O-(3,4-dimethoxycinnamoyl)-β-d-apiofuranosyl(1′" → 6′)]-β-d-glucopyranoside (4). From the methanol extract, two known compounds, 2,6-dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone (5) and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenol (6), were isolated and identified. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay of the identifi ed compounds indicated that 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenol (6) exhibited moderate activity. Growth rings of a tree are simultaneously affected by various environmental constraints, including regional factors such as climate fluctuations and also local, gap-scale dynamics such as competition and stochastic mortality of neighbor trees. Although these local effects are often discarded by dendroclimatologists as random variation, the dendroecological trends may provide valuable information on past forest dynamics. Since dendroecological trends arising from local stand dynamics often have medium-term frequencies with persistence of several years to a few decades, it is usually difficult to separate local, gap-scale forcings from regional, medium-frequency forcings such as El Niño Southern Oscillation or North Atlantic Oscillation. Moreover, conventional dendroecological practices have failed to analyze the continuously changing medium frequency trends. In this study, a continuous index of medium-frequency dendrochronological trends was developed, by generalizing previous analytical methods that evaluate relative changes using moving averages. This method was then tested against a tree ring dataset from a site with a known history of release and suppression due to a hurricane disturbance. To quantify the effects of local gap dynamics against the regional, often climatic effects, increments cores of black spruce (Picea mariana) were sampled from boreal forests in Saskatchewan, Canada, using a stratified sampling design. Assuming that regional forcings affect trees in the given stand homogeneously, the relative effect of stochastic heterogeneity within stand was quantified. The results closely agreed with conventional dendrochronological observations. In closed-canopy stands, stochastic local effects explained 12.9–35.4% of the variation in tree ring widths, because interactions between neighbor trees were likely to be intense. In open-canopy stands, on the other hand, the proportion of explained variance was 1.4–10.2%, reflecting the less-intense local tree interactions in low-density stands. These advancements in statistical analysis and study design will help ecologists and paleo-climatologists to objectively evaluate the effects of climate fluctuations, relative to the effects of local, ecological interactions. Moreover, forest managers can apply concepts of filtering medium-frequency trends to assess release and suppression caused by forest management practices, such as selective cutting and forest thinning.  相似文献

Rice domestication involved a complex process of selection by ancient humans, leading to the development of a new species, Oryza sativa, during the last 10,000 years. Recent rice genome research and the cloning of domestication-related genes have provided novel knowledge about the domestication process, although recent reviews have revealed more complexity than previously suspected. Some of this additional complexity may arise from a poor fit between the new data and previous models. DNA divergence observed in existing landraces, cultivars, and wild relatives can now be determined accurately, so the order of major DNA changes such as single nucleotide polymorphisms during the domestication process can be abducted owing to relatively low mutation rates. Therefore, a new model to explain the selection process during rice domestication, such as the one proposed for further discussion in this paper, is needed to accommodate the new DNA evidence.  相似文献

The objectives of this study are to propose a model for explaining the genotypic and environmental variation in above-ground biomass growth via photosynthesis and respiration processes from transplanting to heading for different rice genotypes grown under a wide range of environments, and to identify the physiological traits associated with genotypic difference in the biomass growth based on model analysis. Cross-locational experiments were conducted with nine different rice genotypes at eight locations in Asia covering a wide climate range under irrigated conditions with sufficient nitrogen application. The crop growth rate observed during the period from transplanting to heading ranged from 3.4 to 19.4 g m−2 d−1 among the genotypes grown at the eight locations. About one-third of the data sets were utilized for model calibration and the remaining sets were used for model validation. An above-ground biomass growth model was developed by integrating processes of single leaf photosynthesis as a function of stomatal conductance and leaf nitrogen content, growth and maintenance respiration and crop development. To rigorously examine the validity of this process model, measured data were input as external variables for leaf area index (LAI) development and leaf nitrogen content per unit leaf area. The model well explained the observed dynamics in above-ground biomass growth (R2 = 0.95*** for validation dataset) of nine rice genotypes grown under a variety of environments in Asia. The model simulation suggested that genotypic difference in the biomass growth was closely related to the difference in the stomatal conductance and leaf nitrogen content, as well as to LAI. This paper proposes the model structure, algorithms and all parameter values contained in the model, and discuss its effectiveness as a component of a more comprehensive model for simulating dynamics of biomass growth, LAI development and nitrogen uptake as a function of genotypic coefficients and environments.  相似文献

In clinical trials, patients usually take many kinds of drugs at the same time. Thus, drug-drug interactions can often directly affect the therapeutic safety and efficacy of many drugs. Oral delivery is the most desirable means of drug administration. Changes in the activity of drug transporters may substantially influence the absorption of administered drugs from the intestine. However, there have been a few studies on food-drug interactions involving transporters. It is important to be aware of the potential of food-drug interactions and to act in order to prevent undesirable and harmful clinical consequences. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is very widely consumed by humans as a food supplement because of its recognition by the public as an important nutrient in supporting human health. Since intestinal efflux transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is one of the major factors in drug-drug interactions, we focused on this transporter. We report here for the first time that CoQ10, which is widely used as a food supplement, affects the transport activity of P-gp.  相似文献
