Technology for storing carbon in the subsoil of agricultural land using organic filter materials in underdrains was evaluated as an activity for sequestering CO2 to mitigate global warming. First, the quantity of carbon remaining in wood chips and rice husks in underdrains was determined over 11 years after construction. Moreover, the quantity of CO2 emissions from the construction of two underdrain types was calculated. Then, a survey was conducted to investigate the effect on greenhouse gas emissions of the filter material. The results indicate that greenhouse gas emissions would not increase. The quantity of storage carbon in the wood chip filter material of underdrains during their 15-year service life was estimated to be 6.76 tCO2eq ha−1. Rice husks, in contrast, were found ineffective in storing carbon. Therefore, the selection of the filter material for underdrains is important. The value of storage carbon in the wood chip filter material is similar to the amount of carbon sequestered by no-till farming, which is now being implemented as a global warming countermeasure based on soil management in agricultural land.

Genetic diversity of wheat wild relatives in the Near East detected by AFLP   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In order to reveal the molecular genetic diversity of wheat wild relatives, an AFLP analysis was conducted with 16 accessions of five Triticum andAegilops species originating from the Near East. Variation within population was studied with at least seven individuals per accession. Four primer combinations were used for selective amplification. Based on the scored bands, we estimated percentage of polymorphic bands, 1 – proportion of shared bands (1-psb) and nucleotide diversity (π). Of the five species used in this study, Ae. speltoides had the highest level of `within population' variation. This species had also the highest value of the variation among populations. As for Triticum species, the level of variation within population was low in diploid species (T. urartu and T. boeoticum),whereas two tetraploid species (T. dicoccoides and T. araraticum) had relatively high levels of variation within population. While the two diploid Triticum indicated a clear interspecific divergence, the two tetraploid wild wheats were not clearly divergent in this study. The variance portioning analysis indicated that the variation detected for diploid Triticum species was mainly composed of `between species' variation, on the other hand that for tetraploid Triticum was mostly composed of `within population' variation. In conclusion, AFLP analysis reveals molecular variation in all accessions used in this study, suggesting a potential genetic diversity of the wheat wild relatives in natural populations. These results have implications for the design of strategies to maintain genetic diversity within genebank collections. Ethyl alpha-D-glucoside (alpha-EG) is normally contained in Sake, which has been taken by Japanese people since ancient times. In this study, the intestinal absorption of alpha-EG was investigated using rat everted intestinal sac. Furthermore, the alpha-EG hydrolytic activity in rat intestine was compared with disaccharides hydrolytic activities, and the effects of alpha-EG on disaccharides hydrolysis were examined using crude enzyme preparation from rat intestinal acetone powder. Glucose liberated from alpha-EG was detected in a serosal solution of everted rat intestinal sac, but it was only less than 4% of absorbed intact alpha-EG. alpha-EG absorption into small intestinal tissue was reduced by elimination of sodium ion from the mucosal solution or under the presence of phlorizin. The hydrolytic activity for alpha-EG was detected in crude enzyme preparation from rat intestinal acetone powder, but it showed a low value as compared to those for disaccharides. alpha-EG showed mixed type inhibition for maltose and sucrose hydrolysis, but inhibitory concentrations of alpha-EG required for 50% inhibition for the maltose and sucrose hydrolysis were higher than those of arabinose and acarbose. In conclusion, a small amount of alpha-EG was hydrolyzed and most of it was absorbed via SGLT1 as an intact form in the rat small intestine, and the inhibitory effect of alpha-EG on disaccharides hydrolysis was weak.  相似文献

Various compositions of 2-hydroxyethacrylate (HEA) and methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (M23G) monomers were irradiated by gamma-rays at low temperature (-78 degrees C) to synthesize polymer carriers for effectively immobilizing yeast cells. The yeast cells were immobilized by cell adhesion onto/in these polymers. The ethanol productivity of immobilized yeast cells with the polymer carriers was higher than that of free cells, increasing by 1-3 times. However, the ethanol productivity of immobilized yeast with the polymer carrier resulting from 7%/7% (HEA/M23G) monomer was low, comparatively. The effect of adding cross-linking reagent (4G) to the low concentration of HEA/M23G monomers on the activity of yeast cells immobilized with the cross-linked carriers by radiation polymerization was investigated. The ethanol productivity of immobilized cells with the carriers, which were cross-linked by adding 3-6% 4G to the low concentration of HEA/M23G monomer, was increased by 20-30%, because the pore size, network structure, and mechanical strength of the polymer carriers was well adjusted and cell leakage from the polymer carriers decreased. The relationship between the ethanol productivity of immobilized yeast cells and the interior structure of polymer carriers is discussed and indicated that the interior structure of polymer carriers is crucial for effective immobilization of yeast cells.  相似文献

The effect of acidic deposition on the soil under red pine forest in Chunchon, Korea was investigated. Precipitation, stream water, and soil solution chemistry were monitored at the watershed from 1997 to 1998. Acidity of the open-bulk precipitation was often neutralized by large amounts of ammonia (NH3) that might have originated from livestock farming and fertilization. Estimated elemental budget at the watershed showed a positive correlation between loss of base cations and proton (H+) production due to nitrogen transformation in soil (ΔH+ NT: ([NH4 +]in-[NH4 +]out)- ([NO3 ?]in-[NO3 ?]out)). When ΔH+ NT increased, concentrations of nitrate in soil solutions also increased. Consequently, pH values of soil solutions decreased, although ion exchange with base cations contributed to buffer reaction. Since acid buffering capacity of the red pine forest soil was small, it was concluded that the input of ammonium nitrogen enhanced nitrification in soil thus causing soil acidification represented by loss of base cations from the watershed.  相似文献

Antitumor activity of compounds isolated from leaves of Eriobotrya japonica   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In a search for possible antitumor agents from natural sources, megastigmane glycosides and polyphenolic constituents isolated from the leaves of Eriobotrya japonica (Rosaceae) were found to inhibit the 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced activation of Epstein-Barr virus early antigen in Raji cells. Roseoside and procyanidin B-2 were among the active compounds found in an in vitro assay; these compounds were further assessed for antitumor activity in vivo in a two-stage carcinogenesis assay on mouse skin. Roseoside significantly delayed carcinogenesis induced by peroxynitrite (initiator) and TPA (promoter), and its potency was comparable to that of a green tea polyphenol, (-)-epigallocatechin 3-O-gallate, in the same assay.  相似文献
