Horses with colic may be endotoxaemic and subsequently develop hypotension during anaesthesia for surgical operation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of dopamine as a means to improve cardiovascular function in anaesthetised endotoxaemic horses. Nine horses (five in group 1 and four in group 2) were anaesthetised with thiopentone and guaifenesin and anaesthesia was maintained with halothane. After approximately one hour, facial artery pressure, heart rate, pulmonary artery pressure, cardiac output, temperature, pHa, PaCO2, PaO2, base excess, packed cell volume, plasma protein concentration and white cell count were measured (time 0). Escherichia coli endotoxin was infused intravenously over 15 minutes in both groups. Group 2 horses were given an intravenous infusion of dopamine (5 micrograms kg-1 min-1) starting five minutes after the start of the endotoxin infusion and continuing for 60 minutes. Measurements were made at 15 minute intervals for 120 minutes. In group 1, one horse died during the endotoxin infusion and in two other horses mean facial artery pressures decreased to 50 mm Hg. Total pulmonary vascular resistance and packed cell volume were significantly increased. Cardiac output, cardiac index and change in mean arterial pressure were significantly greater in group 2 horses than in group 1 horses. Conversely, diastolic pulmonary artery pressure, total vascular resistance and total pulmonary resistance were significantly less in group 2 than in group 1. PaO2, base excess and white blood cell count were significantly decreased in both groups. It was concluded that dopamine improved cardiovascular function in the presence of endotoxaemia and attenuated the rate of haemoconcentration, but had no effect on the development of decreased PaO2 or metabolic acidosis. 相似文献

Outdoor reared pigs are reported to be larger at weaning than indoor reared pigs and respond better to the weaning process. This may be due to enhanced gut development associated with increased size. Eighty sows were allocated to either indoor or outdoor farrowing on the basis of size, parity and past performance. Resulting litters were weaned at either 4 or 6 weeks of age. On days 26 and 40 of age, 40 (10/treatment) and 20 piglets (10/treatment still unweaned) were killed to measure intestinal morphology. Data were analysed as a 2 × 2 factorial using the GLM procedures of Minitab 12.2. Pigs reared outdoors were larger than those reared indoors at both weaning ages, pigs weaned at 6 weeks were heavier than those weaned at 4 weeks, 8.4 versus 7.4 kg at 4 weeks and 12.9 versus 10.5 kg at 6 weeks respectively (± 0.25, P ≤ 0.001). There were no differences in small intestine size relative to body weight due to rearing environment and no differences in gut morphology. When corrected for body weight, 6 week pigs had heavier small intestines than 4 week pigs, 0.39 (± 0.010) versus 0.34 (± 0.007) g/cm length, respectively (P ≤ 0.001). Six week unweaned pigs had similar villus heights to 4 week unweaned pigs but wider villi (P < 0.05) and deeper crypts, for example, at the 25% site crypt depths were 236 and 193 μm (± 7.7/5.5) respectively (P < 0.001). BACKGROUND: Despite a lack of data regarding their efficacy, both caffeine and doxapram have been recommended for treatment of hypercapnia in equine neonates with central nervous system damage. HYPOTHESIS: Caffeine and doxapram alleviate hypercapnia in foals with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. ANIMALS: Sixteen foals treated with either caffeine (n = 8) or doxapram (n = 8). METHODS: Information on age, body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, arterial blood gas parameters, duration of therapy, and outcome was abstracted from each medical record. RESULTS: Therapy with doxapram resulted in a significant decrease in partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2 [P= .004]), bicarbonate concentration (P= .002), and base excess (P= .005) compared with baseline values but failed to correct acidemia. In contrast, administration of caffeine did not result in significant changes from baseline values. The percentage decrease in PaCO2 and bicarbonate concentration was significantly greater in foals treated with doxapram than in foals treated with caffeine (P= .004). The proportions of foals that achieved the targeted PaCO2 (< or = 50 mmHg) were significantly higher in foals treated with doxapram than in foals treated with caffeine (P= .029). The proportion of survivors in the 2 treatment groups was not significantly different. The first unambiguous full-disk radar mapping of Mercury at 3.5-centimeter wavelength, with the Goldstone 70-meter antenna transmitting and 26 antennas of the Very Large Array receiving, has provided evidence for the presence of polar ice. The radar experiments, conducted on 8 and 23 August 1991, were designed to image the half of Mercury not photographed by Mariner 10. The orbital geometry allowed viewing beyond the north pole of Mercury; a highly reflective region was clearly visible on the north pole during both experiments. This polar region has areas in which the circular polarization ratio (pt) was 1.0 to 1.4; values < approximately 0.1 are typical for terrestrial planets.
