Expansion of the facultative parasitic plant Rhamphicarpa fistulosa as a weed of rain-fed lowland rice was studied in 2007 on a national level (Benin) by repeating a survey from 1998. Wider species’ distribution was investigated in 2008. Current and potential impact and management strategies were investigated through farmer surveys and pot experiments. Out of 36 cultivated inland valleys visited across Benin, eight were found to be infested with Rhamphicarpa. Out of nine inland valleys inspected in 1998, Rhamphicarpa was found in five in 2007, compared with only three in 1998. Farmers estimated Rhamphicarpa-inflicted yield losses could exceed 60% and indicated that heavily infested fields are abandoned. In a pot experiment with a wide infestation range, the popular cultivar Gambiaka, combining resistance with sensitivity, showed a mean relative yield loss (RYL) of 63%. Parasitic Rhamphicarpa biomass (PRB), the difference between the above-ground biomass produced with and without a host, was suggested as indicator for infection level of this facultative parasite and hence as a practical measure for host resistance. Genetic variation in resistance and tolerance levels was observed among rice cultivars, but fertilizer applications significantly reduced parasite numbers, biomass and effects, cancelling out such genotypic differences. Depending on the tolerance level of the cultivars, the PRB only accounted for 3.7-38.8% of the average parasite-inflicted host biomass reductions, indicating phytotoxic effects of Rhamphicarpa infection.R. fistulosa is an apparently increasing constraint to rain-fed lowland rice in Benin, threatening rice production in the wider region. The use of resistant and tolerant cultivars, combined with fertilizer applications could reduce Rhamphicarpa infections and mitigate negative effects on rice yields.  相似文献

There is no labeled treatment for dogs with American canine hepatozoonosis (ACH), but the drug therapies discussed in this article, although not rapidly curative, may be successful in alleviating acute clinical signs, prolonging life, reducing the number of clinical relapses, and enhancing quality of life. This article also describes a pilot trial conducted to assess the efficacy of a novel treatment approach with ponazuril as a stand-alone parasiticide administered for 4 weeks without follow-up decoquinate treatment. Although extended ponazuril treatment in combination with NSAID administration did ameliorate acute clinical signs associated with ACH, the parasite was not completely cleared with this treatment protocol alone. Long-term decoquinate therapy remains a critical component of successful treatment of ACH.  相似文献

This study examined cross-pathogenicity of the soilborne pathogen Verticillium dahliae between potato and sunflower. Four week-old potato and sunflower seedlings were inoculated with ten isolates from each of the two host species. Potato cultivars (Kennebec, susceptible, and Ranger Russet, moderately resistant) and sunflower hybrids (IS8048, susceptible, and 6946, moderately resistant) were assessed for disease severity and percent infection at 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks, and 6 weeks after inoculation (w.a.i), and for vascular discolouration at 6 w.a.i., using visual scales developed for each host species. The experiments were conducted in 2006 and repeated in 2007. Based on percent infection and disease severity, most V. dahliae isolates were highly aggressive on both host species. The tested isolates caused higher disease levels in the susceptible than in the moderately resistant phenotypes. They also caused more vascular discolouration in their original than in the alternative host. However, the isolates originating from sunflower caused less infection and disease severity on both hosts, compared to their potato counterparts. Cluster analysis based on all of the criteria used to assess pathogenicity led to three groups of isolates: (i) most V. dahliae potato isolates, which ranged with the highly aggressive control isolates, (ii) one V. dahliae sunflower isolate, which showed a similar pathogenicity level to the weakly-aggressive V. albo-atrum sub-group II control isolate, with no more symptoms than in the non-inoculated plants, and (iii) most V. dahliae sunflower isolates with mildly- to weakly-aggressive levels. Based on these results, V. dahliae cross-pathogenicity is very effective between potato and sunflower. Therefore, rotations involving these species should be avoided, especially where sunflower follows potato.  相似文献

Much of our understanding of weed communities and their interactions with crops comes from studies conducted at, or below, the spatial scale of individual fields. This scale allows for tight control of experimental variables, but systematically ignores the potential for regional-scale environmental variation to affect agronomic operations and thereby influence weed management outcomes. We quantified linkages among agronomic, environmental and weed management characteristics of 174 commercial sweet corn fields throughout the north central United States and evaluated crop and weed responses to these variables using classification and regression tree (CART) analysis. Multi-model selection indicated that characteristics of weed management systems, especially total cost and herbicide rate, were important predictors of weed diversity, interference and fecundity. Adding agronomic variables, such as planting date, or environmental variables, such as latitude, explained additional variation in weed floristic measures. We tested yield predictions of the most parsimonious CART model against a verification data set comprised of over 1500 published observations from 25 experiments conducted in the major North American regions where sweet corn is grown for processing. Yield values fell within the 95% confidence interval of observed data for most branches of the tree, suggesting the experimental and analytical approaches were reasonably robust. Several characteristics favoring sweet corn productivity and weed management sustainability were identified. This work resulted in easily interpretable models, both by scientists and producers, which place crop and weed responses within the context of regional-scale variation in agricultural management and the environment.  相似文献

Drosophila suzukii is widely studied because of its status as a global pest of berries and soft fruits. Environmental conditions and access to food resources impact the physiology and fitness of D. suzukii; these factors could also affect dispersal. Flight mills are a convenient tool for measuring and comparing the flight performance of insects. In this study, two experiments examined the effects of diet and humidity on D. suzukii flight performance using custom-built flight mills, and a third experiment compared the energy reserves of D. suzukii flown or not flown on flight mills. Over all flight assays, the median flight distance and duration were 27.16 m and 2.37 min, respectively, and the mean flight velocity was 0.18 m/s. The maximum flight distance and duration by an individual were 1.75 km and 2.35 h, respectively. Drosophila suzukii provisioned with blossoms, fruits, or standard laboratory diets flew farther distances and longer durations than starved flies. While starvation was associated with reduced flight performance, there were no observed differences between diet types. It remains unclear whether D. suzukii consistently use lipids, glycogen, sugar, or another energy source for flight because tethered individuals may not have flown enough to deplete energy reserves. Humidity did not affect flight performance of D. suzukii within a?~?2 h test period. These data indicate that most D. suzukii are likely to remain within limited area (e.g., within a field) but that some individuals can disperse long distances (field to field spread).  相似文献

Beginning farmer initiatives like the USDA’s Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (BFRDP), farm incubators, and small-scale marketing innovations offer new entrant farmers agricultural training, marketing and business assistance, and farmland loans. These programs align with alternative food movement goals to revitalize the anemic U.S. small farm sector and repopulate landscapes with socially and environmentally diversified farms. Yet even as these initiatives seek to support prospective farmers with tools for success through a knowledge dissemination model, they remain mostly individualistic and entrepreneurial measures that overlook structural barriers to productive and economic success within U.S. agriculture. Analysis of the BFRDP’s funding history and discourse reveals a “knowledge deficit” based program focused on the technical rather than the structural aspects of beginning farming. This is contrasted with qualitative analysis of beginning farmer experiences in California’s Central Coast region. The discrepancies between the farmer experiences and national structure of the BFRDP program ultimately reveal a policy mismatch between the needs of some beginning farmers and the programs intended to support them.  相似文献

Bird–plant species associations can be an important component of habitat selection in forest birds. We assessed tree species preferences of foraging insectivorous birds in a primeval beech–fir forest in north-west Slovakia, hypothesizing that bird population densities are negatively associated with foraging specialization. We sampled foraging behaviour by random point observations from mid-May until the end of July during 1997?2003. Significant preference or avoidance patterns were found in 16 of 17 bird species. Based on the tree preference index, we distinguished four main foraging specializations: generalists, deciduous specialists, coniferous specialists, and dead wood specialists. Many bird species showed strong preferences for such rare and uncommon tree species as wych elm (Ulmus glabra), sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), and Norway spruce (Picea abies). European beech (Fagus sylvatica), hazel (Corylus avellana), and rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) were generally avoided. Birds with low densities tended to be most selective, but that effect was not statistically significant. Population variability was not significantly associated with foraging specialization. We hypothesize that impoverishment of tree species diversity within forest stands could lead to less diverse bird assemblages composed of species specialized on those tree species remaining and of generalist foragers able to adapt to a wide range of foraging substrates.  相似文献
