Background

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is the most common disease of the canine exocrine pancreas, and accurate noninvasive diagnosis is challenging.

Hypothesis/Objectives

To determine the feasibility of using quantitative contrast‐enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) to detect pancreatic perfusional changes in cerulein‐induced AP in dogs.

Animals

Six adult female Beagles.

Methods

Each dog received 2 hours of IV infusion with 7.5 μg/kg/h of cerulein diluted in saline. As control, all dogs received 2 hours of IV infusion of saline 2 weeks before cerulein infusion. CEUS of the pancreas and duodenum were performed before (0 hour), and at 2, 4, 6, and 12 hours after saline and cerulein infusion. Time‐intensity curves were created from regions of interest in the pancreas and duodenum. Five perfusional parameters were measured for statistical analysis: time to initial up‐slope, peak time, time to wash‐out, peak intensity (PI), and area under the curve (AUC).

Results

In cerulein‐induced AP, pancreatic PI increased at 2 and 4 hours when compared to 0 hour, and at 2, 4, and 6 hours when compared to control. AUC increased at 4 hours when compared to 0 hour, and at 2 and 4 hours when compared to control. Time to wash‐out was prolonged at 4 hours when compared to control. For saline control, peak time was faster at 2 hours when compared to 0 hour.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

CEUS parameters PI and AUC can provide useful information in differentiating acute pancreatitis from normal pancreas. Cerulein‐induced AP was characterized by prolonged hyperechoic enhancement on CEUS.  相似文献

This survey was conducted from 2005 to 2008 regarding the thermal environment of three types of experimental houses—a wood and mud composite wall type (Type WM), a mud wall type (Type M), and an insulated wall type (Type I). To reveal the influence of the wall composition of wooden houses on the indoor thermal environment, each experimental house was constructed on the same site. As a result, under natural indoor air temperatures, the monthly average indoor air temperature level and the time ratio of indoor air temperature surpassing the outdoor air temperature were in the following order: Type I > Type WM > Type M. Type WM exhibited the highest phase shift of air temperature, indicating that the insulation performance and heat capacity affect the phase shift of air temperature. The equalization of indoor air temperature through the suppression of the increase in the indoor air temperature of Type M is likely caused by low insulation performance and large thermal capacity. The time fluctuations in electric consumption by air conditioning and indoor–outdoor air temperature differences of each experimental house over 1 day indicated that a building’s thermal load and the thermal capacity are related.  相似文献

The ambrosia beetle Platypus quercivorus causes mass mortality of Fagaceae trees in Japan, and tree species differ in their susceptibility to P. quercivorus. We hypothesized that interspecific differences in susceptibility are caused by differences in beetle infestation patterns, that is, how many beetles fly to a tree and how many of those arriving bore holes. To examine how tree susceptibility is related to these parameters, two tree species with different degrees of susceptibility were studied (highly susceptible Quercus crispula and less susceptible Q. salicina). Specifically, we measured the number of male beetles per unit area that flew to the host trees (NFM) and the density of holes bored by male beetles (DH). From these two values, we calculated the proportion of male beetles flying to a host tree that bored holes (PBM). These parameters were compared for the two Quercus species. Although the two species did not differ in NFM in 2003, PBM was markedly lower for Q. salicina than for Q. crispula and DH was significantly lower for Q. salicina than for Q. crispula. Thus, the lower susceptibility of Q. salicina is partly explained by its low PBM.  相似文献

Oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) has been implicated in atherogenesis. Antioxidants that prevent LDL from oxidizing may reduce atherosclerosis. This study investigated LDL antioxidant activity in edible plant products for development of dietary supplementation to prevent atherosclerosis. Fifty-two kinds of edible plants were extracted using 70% aqueous ethanol solution, and the antioxidant activity of the extracts, which inhibit human LDL oxidation induced by copper ion, was determined on the basis of the oxidation lag time and represented as epigallocatechin 3-gallate equivalent. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content were also measured for comparisons with antioxidant activity in LDL. Plant products showing the greatest activity in LDL oxidation assay were akamegashiwa (Mallotus japonicus) leaf, Japanese privet (Ligustrum japonicum) leaf, green tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze], and astringent persimmon (Diospyros kaki). The present study revealed high levels of LDL antioxidant activity in plant products for which such activity levels are underestimated in the DPPH radical scavenging assay and Folin-Ciocalteu assay.  相似文献

Andosol formation involves the rapid, abundant and in situ formation of non‐crystalline materials from tephra deposits. A large amount of humus complexed with Al also accumulates in the A horizons. As these materials are rich in Al or Fe compared to the parent tephra, the concentrations of the major and minor elements change significantly during Andosol formation. The objectives of this study were to examine how the rock type of the tephra and its weight loss during the formation process affect the changes in the element concentrations of Andosols. A total of 95 samples with different rock types from 18 pedons of Andosols in Japan were used to determine the total concentrations of 54 elements. Principal component analysis suggested that the degree of weathering and the rock types of parent tephra are the important factors in the variation of the element concentrations in Andosols. Three rock types, dacitic, andesitic and basaltic‐andesitic, were identified from the V and Zn contents of ferromagnetic minerals separated from the Andosol samples. Basaltic Andosols were identified from the abundant coloured volcanic glass and olivine in the sand fraction. Regarding concentrations of 41 elements, at least one group based on rock type was significantly different from one to three other groups at the P= 0.05 level. The content of oxalate‐extractable Si (Sio), Al (Alo) and Fe (Feo) was used as an index to show the extent of Andosol development. Relatively strong correlations between the element concentrations and Sio, Alo and Feo as well as other weathering indices were found in the andesitic samples. Among these elements, at least 27 (Be, Al, Ti, Fe, Y, Zr, Nb, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, Tl, Pb, Th and U) were enriched in the Andosols and the increases in these concentrations were related to total weight loss due to soil formation processes.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to clarify the mechanism underlying the oxidative process in erythrocytes infected with Babesia gibsoni. The parasite B. gibsoni was cultured together with erythrocytes from normal dogs for 7 days. When parasitemia reached 12.0-13.4% at Day 7. the production of superoxide in erythrocytes was significantly higher in the parasitized culture than in the control culture (p<0.005). The concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in erythrocytes in parasitized culture was also significantly increased compared with the control culture (p<0.005), indicating that lipid peroxidation was greater in infected erythrocytes than in non-infected cells. In addition, the rates of superoxide generation in the blood of B. gibsoni-infected dogs were also significantly higher than in non-infected dogs (p<0.001). These results indicate that superoxide anions are increased in erythrocytes parasitized with B. gibsoni. and suggest that oxidative damage, due to lipid peroxidation, might be caused in host erythrocytes by the parasite.  相似文献

A practical approach to enhancing the fire retardancy of wood-based materials by adding fire-retardant chemicals to the glue was developed. Plywoods were manufactured using urea melamine formaldehyde resin mixed with ammonium pentaborate or dihydrogen phosphate. Treated plywoods had better incombustibility than untreated ones. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis clearly demonstrated the distribution of boron and phosphorus, which had migrated from the glue to the wood, contributing to better fire retardant properties. The cross-sectional micrographs from scanning electron microscopy showed that untreated specimens exhibited a foamy structure near the interface in the glue layer and the deformed structure of wood cells. The cell structure and cell wall thickness retained intact in the specimens treated with urea melamine formaldehyde resin mixed with ammonium pentaborate or dihydrogen phosphate. When observing the effect of the thickness of overlay veneers on incombustibility, a shorter glowing time was obtained from the specimens with a thicker surface layer when the fire retardant chemical was added at 2%, but the differences were smaller at the higher chemical retention of 4%. A similar tendency was observed for the char length.Part of this paper was presented at the International Tropical Wood Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 1997  相似文献

Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) wood powder was carbonized at varying temperatures and used as a material to remove heavy metals from their aqueous solutions. Single solutions of mercuric chloride and mixed aqueous solutions containing lead nitrate, arsenic chloride, and cadmium chloride as well as mercuric chloride (1, 5, and 10 ppm) were prepared to determine the efficiency of removing heavy metals by these materials. Wood powder and carbonized wood at 200°, 600°, and 1000°C removed mercury within the concentration range 1–10ppm; mercury was preferentially removed even when mixed with other heavy metals. Wood powder carbonized at 1000°C achieved the best removal of heavy metals among the wood-based materials and even commercial activated carbon in both single and mixed solutions. This paper was presented at the 45th annual meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society in Tokyo, April 1995  相似文献
