Rice crop diversity hasdecreased dramatically in the recent past.Understanding the causes that underlie theevident genetic erosion is critical for thefood security of subsistence rice farmers andbiodiversity. Our study shows that farmers inthe northeastern Philippines had a markedreduction in rice diversity from 1996 to 1998.The ultimate causes were a drought resultingfrom the El Niño phenomenon in 1997 andflooding due to two successive typhoons in1998. The proximate causes, however, includedlocal water control factors, limitations in thehousehold and village-level seedinfrastructure, farm location in relation tothe goods and services necessary to obtainseeds, policies and programs of the Departmentof Agriculture, and the characteristics of therice varieties themselves. The implications ofour study are that genetic erosion is notalways the result of purposeful acts by farmersnor is it necessarily gradual. Improvingon-farm seed technology will stabilize the seedproduction, distribution, and use system andthereby enhance household food security.Ultimately, rice diversity will be improvedonly if diversity is a safe and viable optionfor farmers. Therefore, public policy thatsupports farmers who maintain a diverse set ofcultivars is critical for any on-farmconservation strategy.  相似文献

With the long-term goal of producing nanometer-scale machines, we describe here the unidirectional rotary motion of a synthetic molecular structure fueled by chemical conversions. The basis of the rotation is the movement of a phenyl rotor relative to a naphthyl stator about a single bond axle. The sense of rotation is governed by the choice of chemical reagents that power the motor through four chemically distinct stations. Within the stations, the rotor is held in place by structural features that limit the extent of the rotor's Brownian motion relative to the stator.  相似文献

Skeletochronological analysis provides age estimates, not actual ages, for seaturtles. Unlike age and growth data from captive and headstart turtles, these estimates predict the actual patterns of age and growth in free-living turtles. A moderate-sized sample of 69 Lepidochelys kempii, salvaged from the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the USA, had straight-line carapace lengths (SCL) of 188–720 mm and age-estimates of 2–15 years. The von Bertalanffy growth model provides the best fit for the age-estimate and size data and predicts maturity between 11 and 16 years, depending upon the body size selected to represent sexual maturity. The logistic growth model suggests later maturity of 13–19 years. Comparison of the Atlantic and Gulf components of the sample suggests a faster growth rate for ridleys in the Gulf of Mexico, although the sizes of the subsamples are too small for this interpretation to be reliable without additional data. Our age and growth estimates indicate that some members of the early cohorts of headstart ridleys are mature and may have nested already.  相似文献

N,N'-Dibutylurea (DBU) is a breakdown product of benomyl [methyl 1-(butylcarbamoyl)-2-benzimidazole carbamate], the active ingredient in Benlate fungicides, and has been proposed as one cause for crop damage that growers claim to have occurred from the use of Benlate 50 DF fungicide. This study assessed DBU formation upon (1). application of n-butyl-1-[(14)C]butylisocyanate (BIC), the immediate precursor to DBU formation, in four soils at two water potentials (0.03 and 0.1 MPa) and (2). application of benomyl butyl-1-(14)C-benomyl enriched Benlate DF and SP fungicides to two soils at various combinations of negative water potential (0.03 or 0.1 MPa) and temperature (23 or 33 degrees C). Parent compounds, metabolites, and (14)CO(2) were tracked using chromatographic analysis with radioassay and UV detection, liquid scintillation counting, and postextraction oxidation of the soil. At 0.03 MPa in all four BIC-treated soils, DBU formation was never detected. At 0.1 MPa, DBU was detected in two soils, but at concentrations <3.6 microg kg(-)(1) (0.3 wt % of applied BIC). In both soils treated with benomyl formulations, DBU formation was observed with only Benlate 50 DF application at 0.03 MPa and 23 degrees C, which was followed by rapid dissipation of DBU. The maximum concentration observed was 0.41 microg g(-)(1) (0.65 wt % of applied benomyl at 62.8 microg g(-)(1)), which is well below levels currently reported to cause adverse effects to plants. Combined benomyl and carbendazim half-lives in soils across treatments were 2-3 months. This study demonstrated that further production and accumulation of DBU in soils after Benlate application or from residual benomyl remaining in the soil are highly unlikely and that persistence of any DBU in soils is likely to be short-lived.  相似文献

An effective nature reserve network design should reflect the ecological requirements of target species, while simultaneously considering costs. In this study, we propose a design method that considers the ecological role of the spatial arrangement of reserve sites in relation to the long-term persistence of metapopulations of the target species. We apply our design method to an amphibian metapopulation, which illustrates how varying the emphasis on the importance of design factors can affect estimated metapopulation persistence. Comparisons among reserve design methods show that considering the ecological function, rather than generic spatial rules, of the spatial location of reserve sites may be more likely to support species survival. A piecemeal treatment or mechanistic application of spatial rules in reserve design may be subject to the risk of not producing the most effective reserve network, and in some cases may even compromise the conservation objective which could be achieved otherwise.  相似文献
