Among 15 soils with different cropping practices, seven which had an history of repeated atrazine applications showed accelerated degradation of this herbicide. By contrast, grassland or agricultural soils with no recorded atrazine application, at least for the last three years, had a low degradation potential. No direct relation was found between the rate of atrazine mineralisation and the size of the microbial biomass. In adapted soils, the amounts of extractable residues were lowered and the very high percentages of radioactivity from [ring-14C]atrazine recovered as [14C]carbon dioxide demonstrated that N-dealkylation and deamidation were the only processes for micro-organisms to derive carbon and energy for heterotrophic growth. Kinetics of microbial 14C accumulation revealed that atrazine ring carbon could be incorporated by direct oxidative condensation with structural components of the bacterial or fungal cell whereas side-chain carbon was preferentially used for biosynthesis of new protoplasmic cell material, as confirmed by the high turnover rate of radiolabelled microbial components. From the determination of the Michaelis–Menten parameters, Vm and Km in the presence of different selective biocides, it was possible to conclude that fungi were probably less active in atrazine degradation than bacteria and that over years the microbial atrazine-degrading community showed an increased efficiency. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

An ontology-based simulation (OntoSim) is a unique data modeling environment where soil–plant-nutrient processes are represented as database objects and the user-defined relationships among objects are used to generate computer code (Java) for running the simulation. The aim of this study was to model hydrologic processes of sugarcane-grown organic soils utilizing OntoSim in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) of South Florida. This OntoSim-Sugarcane model describes the complex hydrology of sub-irrigation and open ditch drainage commonly used on Florida farms.Model calibration was conducted by (i) selecting rectangular farm water management units (<12 ha), which are encompassed with farm ditches, from two farms in the EAA, (ii) assembling all relevant input data including water tables (WT) recorded at the monitoring farm well of each unit, and (iii) optimizing the fits between the simulated and observed daily WT during two consecutive water years (WY). By calibrating two site-specific parameters – lateral saturated hydraulic conductivities of soil profiles and vertical saturated hydraulic conductivity of the underlying limestone bedrock – good agreement between simulated and observed daily WT was obtained (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient >0.65; coefficient of residual mass <1%) within the units during WY96–97 (May 1995–April 1997). The validation of the model during subsequent WY98–99 at both units also showed Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency >0.55 and coefficient of residual mass <3%. It indicated that OntoSim-Sugarcane is able to simulate daily fluctuations of WT within the farm units and estimate lateral drainage/sub-irrigation and deep seepage that significantly contribute to the water balance at farms in the EAA. Aims : The aim of this study was to explore interactive effects between quality (types) and quantity (application rates) of biochar as well as of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) symbiosis on the growth of potato plants. Methods : A low P sandy loam soil was amended with 0%, 1.5%, or 2.5% (w/w) of either of 4 types of biochar, which were produced from wheat straw pellets (WSP) or miscanthus straw pellets (MSP) pyrolyzed at temperatures of either 550°C or 700°C. Potato plants grown in pots containing the soils or soil biochar mixture were inoculated with or without AM fungus (AMF), Rhizophagus irregularis. The experiment was carried out under fully irrigated semi‐field conditions and plants were harvested 101 days after planting. Results : Application of high temperature biochar decreased growth, biomass and tuber yield of potato plants, while the low temperature biochar had a similar effect on yield as plants grown without biochar amendment. Total biomass of potato plants were decreased with the increasing rate of biochar. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus inoculation stimulated the growth of potato plants in all organs, increased tuber biomass significantly in 1.5% MSP700 amended plants, and to a lesser degree for WSP700, MSP550, and WSP550. In addition, plant biomass gain was linearly related to N, P, and K uptake, the ratio of P to N in the leaf of plants indicated that all treatments were mainly P‐limited. A multiple linear regression using P uptake and biochar rate as independent variables explained 91% of the variation in total biomass. The single effect of AMF inoculation, type and rate of biochar affected plant N, P and K uptake similarly. While AMF inoculation significantly increased P uptake in potato plants grown in soil with WSP700 or MSP700 despite of the rate of biochar. In general, application of biochar significantly increased AMF root colonization of potato plants. Conclusions : The application of MSP550 at 1.5% combined with AMF stimulated growth of potato the most. Furthermore, the results indicated that the interactive effect of AMF inoculation, biochar type and application rate on potato growth to a large extent could be explained by effects on plant nutrient uptake. 相似文献

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated in all aerobic organisms. Free radicals are highly reactive ROS that cause damage to biological materials. Fish is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, and hence, very prone to lipid peroxidation. Both lipid and protein oxidations are important for quality loss during storage of fish, with high impact on taste and texture. Also, there are interactions between protein and secondary lipid oxidation products (aldehydes) that occur in foods because the oxidation products from one reaction can further react with both lipids and proteins respectively. This review focuses on the mechanisms and pathways of the lipid and protein oxidation and their possible relationship. Additionally, the target amino acids and final impacts of this relationship were considered. We propose that the products of lipid oxidation promote protein oxidation in fish rather than the other way around specially, during frozen storage, while during postmortem changes protein oxidation dominates. Finally, it seems that, secondary products of lipid oxidation might have more impact on the functionality of proteins from both Michael addition and Schiff base reaction rather than lipid hydroperoxides and lipid radical transfer. 相似文献

Soil microbial C and N (Cmic, Nmic) estimation by the chloroform fumigation‐extraction method is erroneous in densely rooted soils due to CHCl3‐labile C and N compounds. The effect of a pre‐extraction with 50 mM K2SO4 and a pre‐incubation (conditioning at 25 °C for 7 days) on the flush in extractable, CHCl3‐labile C (C‐flush) and N (N‐flush) was tested with reference to rooting density (0.3—75 mg root dry matter g—1) in one arable and 3 grassland soils. In the arable soil and in the second horizon (10—20 cm) of a grassland soil, C‐flush values were not affected by the pre‐extraction. However, the pre‐extraction considerably reduced C‐flush values in the top soils of the grassland (above 10 cm). Only about 42 % was found in the pre‐extracted roots and the rest was lost during the pre‐extraction. The estimated concentrations of Nmic decreased due to pre‐extraction of soil samples with low root biomass. Clearly, the concentrations of Nmic were underestimated by introducing the pre‐extraction. Soil pre‐incubation reduced C‐flush values only slightly, whereas N‐flush values were not affected. It can be concluded that (1) CHCl3‐labile root C and N is partly extracted with K2SO4 after pre‐incubation and (2) CHCl3‐labile C and N removed with the roots during pre‐extraction is partly derived from microbial biomass. Soils with low rooting density (arable soils, grassland soils below approximately 10 cm depth) should therefore be fumigated and extracted without pre‐extraction. In densely rooted soils, fumigation extraction with and without pre‐extraction probably gives estimates for the minimum and maximum of Cmic and Nmic. 相似文献

Genotypic influence of both male and female parents on haploid production through interspecific crosses was studied using
eight wheat and four maize genotypes. The average numbers of embryos and green haploid plantlets obtained per pollinated floret
were 17.6% and 10.1%, respectively. Clear genotypic influence of the wheat genotype was detected, but heterozygosity of the
wheat did not affect haploid production. Analogous response to anther culture and interspecific crossing was observed, still
a wheat variety which did not respond to anther culture, produced 1.1 plantlets per pollinated spike upon maize pollination.
This appears to be a major advantage of interspecific crossing compared to anther culture technique in wheat. Circumstantial
evidence is presented for specific wheat × maize interaction on haploid plantlet formation. Rye chromatin enhanced haploid
production but only in a complete 1B/1R substitution line. Ovaries with an embryo were found to be dispersed evenly all over
the wheat spike, suggesting that within certain limits the developmental stage of ovaries and thus time of pollination within
a spike are not as important as it was previously assumed.

Increasing demand for land to ensure human food security in the future has already impelled agricultural production into marginal areas. The environmental conditions found there have a more pronounced impact on agricultural productivity than in the systems used so far under favourable conditions. In addition to this challenge, climate change is expected to increase the unreliability of weather conditions (through increased variability and occurrence of extremes) for farmers considerably. This unreliability is even more serious in developing countries’ farming system where food security is vulnerable. Current efforts in digitalization offer great possibilities to improve farmers` decision-making processes. A wide range of online tools and smartphone applications is available to support both agricultural extension services and smallholder farmers alike. These apps are often parameterized and validated to certain environments and are troubled when applied to new geographical locations and different environmental conditions. We have conducted field trials to demonstrate potential methods to close knowledge gaps in the data background for one of these apps, RiceAdvice, concerning three key aspects: shifting of cropping calendar, adjustment of fertilizer management and genotype selection. Sites in Ethiopia, Madagascar and Rwanda were selected to represent altitudinal gradients, with overlapping elevations reflecting differences in temperature to enable cross-country comparisons. Planting dates were distributed throughout three calendar years, with continuous iterative planting dates taking place in Madagascar, in- and off-season planting dates in Rwanda with different fertilizer applications, and one planting date during each rainy season in Ethiopia with different management options. With these trials, we have been able to identify key data sets needed for the adaptation of agricultural decision support tools to new environments. These include the assessment of climatic constraints on innovations to cropping calendars (e.g. double cropping), informed selection of alternative varieties able to complete crucial parts of their phenological development to avoid temperature-related stress inducing, for example spikelet sterility in rice in late development stages and the effectivity of potential innovations in fertilizer management strategies. 相似文献

Enumeration of circulating tumour cells (CTC) has shown promise for prognostication and guidance of therapeutic decisions in human cancers. The objective of this study was to enumerate CTC over time in dogs with naturally occurring osteosarcoma (OSA), and to determine correlation with patient outcome. Twenty-six dogs with OSA and no evidence of metastatic disease at the time of amputation were enrolled. Dogs were assessed for lung metastases and CTC prior to and following amputation, and at each chemotherapy visit. Twenty-one dogs completed the study. Nineteen dogs were euthanized and two were alive and free of metastases. Overall survival time ranged from 88 to 1058 days (median survival time (MST) 374 days). Increased serum alkaline phosphatase activity, advanced age, and higher body weight were significantly associated with lower MST. Dogs with OSA had a mean of 356 (0 to 4443) CTC/106 leukocytes. In 12 of 15 dogs that developed radiographic evidence of metastasis, a pre-metastatic CTC spike was retrospectively detectable on average 36.5 (1–100 days) days prior to metastasis and was associated with significantly shorter MST (301 ± 64 vs. 626 ± 55 days; p = .0107). In a multivariable analysis, dogs with a CTC spike were 10× more likely to die compared with those without. These results suggest that a spike in CTC frequency precedes detection of metastasis in dogs with OSA and is associated with shorter survival. More frequent enumeration of CTC in a larger cohort of dogs with OSA may be warranted. 相似文献

In human athletes significant changes in cytokine concentrations secondary to exercise have been observed. This prospective study evaluated the effect of a multi-day stage sled dog race on plasma concentrations of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-2 (IL-2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and interleukin-10 (IL-10). Samples from 20 dogs were harvested prior to and on days 2 and 8 of an 8-day race. Exercise resulted in significantly decreased TNF-α and IL-8 as well as increases of MCP-1, IL-6, and IL-10 concentrations (P-value between 0.01 and < 0.0001 for all parameters). The proportion of values for IL-2 that were below the detection limit increased from 40% on day 0 to 75% on day 2 and decreased on day 8 to 40% (P = 0.04). Racing sled dogs show cytokine-concentration changes that are different from those in humans. 相似文献
