Above- and belowground biomass in a Brazilian Cerrado   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Cerrado is a biome that occupies about 25% of the Brazilian territory and is characterized by a gradient of grassland to savanna and forest formations and by high species richness. It has been severely affected by degradation and deforestation and has been heavily fragmented over the past 4-5 decades. Despite the recognized overall ecological importance of the Cerrado, there are only few studies focusing on the quantification of biomass in this biome. We conducted such a case study in the South-East of Brazil in a cerrado sensu stricto (cerrado s.s.) with the goal to produce estimates of above- and belowground biomass and to develop allometric equations. A number of 120 trees from 18 species were destructively sampled and partitioned into the components: leaves, branches and bole. Five models with DBH (D), height (H), D2H and wood density (WD) as independent variables were tested for the development of allometric models for individual tree aboveground biomass (leaves + branches + bole). One model based on basal area (BA) as a stand parameter was also tested as an alternative approach for predicting aboveground biomass in the stand level. Belowground biomass was estimated by subsampling on 10 sample plots. Mean aboveground tree biomass (bole, branches and leaves) was estimated to be 62,965.5 kg ha−1(SE = 14.6%) and belowground biomass accounted for 37,501.8 kg ha−1 (SE = 23%). The best-fit equation for the estimation of individual tree aboveground biomass include DBH and wood density as explanatory variables (R2 = 0.898; SEE = 0.371) and is applicable for the diameter range of this study (5.0-27.6 cm) and in environments with similar conditions of the cerrado s.s. sampled. In the stand level, the model tested presented a higher goodness of fit than the single tree models (R2 = 0.934; SEE = 0.224). Our estimates of aboveground biomass are higher than reported by other studies developed in the same physiognomy, but the estimates of belowground biomass are within the range of values reported in other studies from sites in cerrado s.s. Both biomass estimates, however, exhibit relatively large standard errors. The root-to-shoot ratio of the sample trees is in the magnitude of reported values for savanna ecosystems, but smaller than estimated from other studies in the cerrado s.s.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   This study was carried out to investigate the genetic variability and the population genetics of Sparus auratus. In fact, despite its importance in Mediterranean fisheries and aquaculture, very little it is known concerning its population structure. Samples of wild gilthead sea bream were collected in seven different localities along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts and were genetically characterized by means of microsatellite markers. Genotyping at four microsatellite loci revealed high polymorphism (7–38 alleles/locus) and expected heterozygosities, which ranged from 0.80 to 0.85. A slight but significant population structure was found ( F ST = 0.010). In fact, at least three populations of gilthead sea bream within the Western Mediterranean Sea were identified (Sardinian Sea, Sardinian Channel and Central Tyrrhenian Sea), which are also genetically differentiated from those of the Atlantic Ocean and the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

Transport across cellular membranes is an essential process that is catalyzed by diverse membrane transport proteins. The turnover rates of certain transporters are inhibited by their substrates in a process termed trans-inhibition, whose structural basis is poorly understood. We present the crystal structure of a molybdate/tungstate ABC transporter (ModBC) from Methanosarcina acetivorans in a trans-inhibited state. The regulatory domains of the nucleotide-binding subunits are in close contact and provide two oxyanion binding pockets at the shared interface. By specifically binding to these pockets, molybdate or tungstate prevent adenosine triphosphatase activity and lock the transporter in an inward-facing conformation, with the catalytic motifs of the nucleotide-binding domains separated. This allosteric effect prevents the transporter from switching between the inward-facing and the outward-facing states, thus interfering with the alternating access and release mechanism.  相似文献

Based on data from the National Lynx Census, carried out in Poland in 2000-2001, and using Geographic Information System, we analysed nine habitat characteristics in 56 circular sample plots (113 km2 each), where lynx (Lynx lynx) have been recorded, and 118 plots with no signs of their presence. In plots with lynx the forest cover (on average 68%) was two times higher and the forest fragmentation lower than in plots with no lynx records. The plots with and without lynx differed significantly also in the number of villages and towns, length of main motorways and railways. Lynx occurrence was negatively associated to human settlements and transportation infrastructure. Logistic regression analysis showed that sufficient forest cover (>40%) and the short straight-line distance to the eastern or southern border of Poland (as a proxy of the distance to a more contiguous range of lynx in Europe) are the two most important variables explaining lynx distribution. We conclude that, in Poland, increase of forest fragmentation and transportation infrastructure may become important threats to lynx populations.  相似文献

To improve phosphorus (P) fertilization and environmental assessments, a better understanding of release kinetics of solid-phase P to soil solution is needed. In this study, Fe (hydr)oxide-coated filter papers (Fh papers), isotopic exchange kinetics (IEK) and chemical extractions were used to assess the sizes of fast and slowly desorbing P pools in the soils of six long-term Swedish field experiments. The P desorption data from the Fh-paper extraction of soil (20 days of continual P removal) were fitted with the Lookman two-compartment desorption model, which estimates the pools of fast (Q1) and slowly (Q2) desorbing P, and their desorption rates k1 and k2. The amounts of isotope-exchangeable P (E) were calculated (E1min to E>3 months) and compared with Q1 and Q2. The strongest relationship was found between E1 min and Q1 (r2 = .87, p < .01). There was also an inverse relationship between the IEK parameter n (the rate of exchange) and k1 (r2 = .52, p < .01) and k2 (r2 = .52, p < .01), suggesting that a soil with a high value of n desorbs less P per time unit. The relationships between these results show that they deliver similar information, but both methods are hard to implement in routine analysis. However, Olsen-extractable P was similar in magnitude to Q1 (P-Olsen = 1.1 × Q1 + 2.3, r2 = .96), n and k1 were related to P-Olsen/P-CaCl2, while k2 was related to P-oxalate/P-Olsen. Therefore, these extractions can be used to estimate the sizes and desorption rates of the different P pools, which could be important for assessments of plant availability and leaching.  相似文献

Purpose

In mine soils, especially from arid or semiarid areas, the use of low-quality water for irrigation is a usual practice. Therefore to fill this gap, different experiments have been carried out to evaluate the effect of compost, pesticide and wastewater on the growth of tomato plants in a mine soil located at an iron extraction area.

Materials and methods

Soils proceeded from Alquife mine wastes whose most outstanding characteristics are alkaline conditions, low organic matter and electrical conductivity and high As concentration. The compost of sewage sludge (CSL) used to amend this soil had a slightly acid pH (6.8), EC 3.0?±?0.07 dS m-1 (1/10 ratio, m/V) and 10 % organic carbon (OC) content. Irrigation was performed with distilled water (DW) or wastewater (WW) and two pesticides, the insecticide thiacloprid and the fungicide fenarimol, were applied to the soil. Tomato was grown directly from seeds on each pot. Four treatments with addition of pesticides were considered. For comparison purposes, two additional treatments without pesticides were also included.

Results and discussion

Addition of compost of sewage sludge led to a significant and sustained increase of soil OC content and dehydrogenase activity, while irrigation with wastewater had a slight or negligible effect on both properties. The plant species responded negatively to wastewater irrigation when this practice was undertaken with the application of both pesticides. No detectable amounts of thiacloprid, a relatively unstable and polar insecticide, were found in soil. The concentration of fenarimol in soil was higher after amendment with compost, but was not modified by irrigation with wastewater. In tomato shoots, the amounts of both pesticides were inversely correlated with final soil organic carbon, indicating that this soil property is relevant for their plant uptake. Besides, fenarimol concentrations in the soil and the tomato shoots were inversely related (r?=??0.836).

Conclusions

Tomato was not able to grow healthy in Alquife mine soil without compost addition. The irrigation with wastewater only reduced plant growth when used in combination with pesticides. Uptake of both pesticides by tomato plants was negligible according to the low bioaccumulation factor values, but was almost doubled for wastewater irrigation. Caution should be taken with the use of treated wastewater, because it may reduce plant growth in tomato that is a species sensitive to salinity.

Sponge gourd is a popular vegetable grown throughout India. Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus, the causal virus of tomato leaf curl disease, has recently been reported to be associated with sponge gourd, causing up to 100% crop loss under epidemic conditions. We have collected 30 genotypically diverse genotypes of sponge gourd from different parts of India, screened these for resistance under natural epiphytotic conditions, and then confirmed the results through challenge inoculation with a purified strain of the virus under insect-proof greenhouse conditions. The minimum vulnerability index was recorded in genotype DSG-6 (3.33), followed by DSG 7 (6.0) under the challenge (whitefly-populated) inoculation conditions. Two susceptible genotypes (‘Pusa Sneha’ and NSG-1-11), both possessing desirable fruit characters, were crossed with the two most promising resistant lines (DSG-6 and DSG-7) and the disease reaction of segregating and backcross generations studied through challenge inoculation with a purified strain of virus under insect-proof greenhouse conditions. A chi-square (χ2) test of frequency distribution based on the vulnerability index of the F2 progenies of the two resistant × susceptible crosses revealed monogenic dominant Mendelian ratio 3(R):1(S) to be the best fit in all crosses. This monogenic dominant model was further confirmed by the 1(R):1(S) ratio found to be best fit for the test cross with the susceptible parent. These results reveal that resistance to Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus associated with yellow mosaic disease of sponge gourd is controlled by a single dominant gene in the genetic background of the resistant parents (DSG-6 and DSG-7) and that these two lines can be effectively utilized for the development of high-yielding and yellow mosaic disease-resistant varieties/hybrids of sponge gourd. This is the first conclusive identification of a resistant source and the inheritance of resistance against Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus in sponge gourd.  相似文献

To investigate the epidemiology of human toxocariasis a field survey was carried out at homes of 194 children (80 of rural and 114 of urban origin) with diagnosed disease from central Poland. A questionnaire referring to the possible risk factors was directed to their parents. Overall contamination rate of soil by Toxocara eggs was 27.5% in rural and 21.1% in urban environment in the households examined, with difference not significant (chi2=1.08, p=0.2986). In rural settlements 29.3% of yards surrounding houses were found contaminated, whereas in urban 25.0% of family gardens, 26.4% of private yards and 10.7% of public sandpits were positive. Frequency of positive samples differs only for rural yards and urban sandpits (chi2=3.85, p=0.0499). The study showed a high risk of reinfection for the ill children in sites of their residence. Despite diagnosed toxocariasis kids were not adequately supervised by their parents with no measures undertaken to avoid further infection. These data present strong need for educational programs which should be implemented for prevention of Toxocara infections in children.  相似文献
