Adsorption and degradation rates of chlorsulfuron and metsulfuron-methyl were measured in soil taken from depths of 0–20, 20–40 and 40–60 cm at eight sites. Adsorption of both herbicides was negatively correlated with soil pH, and positively correlated with soil organic matter content. When two soils with very high organic matter were excluded from the calculations, the correlations with organic matter content were no longer statistically significant but those with soil pH were affected only slightly. Degradation rates of both herbicides generally decreased with increasing depth in the soil and were positively correlated with microbial biomass and negatively correlated with soil pH. The possible significance of the results to persistence of the herbicides in the field is discussed.  相似文献

Quantifying the mortality of marine fishes is important for understanding spawner–recruit relationships, predicting year‐class strength, and improving fishery stock assessment models. There is increasing evidence that pelagic predators can exert a top‐down influence on prey, especially during critical early life‐history stages. The objective of this study was to quantify predation by North Pacific albacore on Northern anchovy in the California current system (CCS). I estimated the abundance of juvenile albacore in the CCS from 1966–2005 using stock assessment models and spatially explicit catch‐per‐unit‐effort time series. Anchovy abundance (1966–93), both recruitment and total biomass, was obtained from a stock assessment model. Annual rates of anchovy consumption by albacore were calculated using diet studies of albacore in the CCS, an age‐structured bioenergetics model, and regional estimates of albacore abundance. The range of estimates was large: albacore may remove from less than 1% to over 17% of anchovy pre‐recruitment biomass annually. Relationships between predation and recruitment biomass were consistent with expectations from top‐down effects, but further study is required. This is the first attempt to quantify a specific source of mortality on anchovy recruits and to demonstrate potential top‐down effects of predation on anchovy.  相似文献

A coupled biophysical model is used to hindcast the early life history of a population of walleye pollock ( Theragra chalcogramma ), to assess possible physical causes of interannual variability in recruitment. The modelling approach combines a primitive equation, rigid'lid hydrodynamic model with a probabilistic, individual-based biological model of growth, development, and mortality. Individuals are tracked through space using daily velocity fields generated from the hydrodynamic model, along with self-directed vertical migrations appropriate to each life stage in the biological model. The hydrodynamic model is driven with wind and runoff time series appropriate to each year. Biological model output compares favourably with observed spatial distributions for specific years. Lloyd's index of patchiness, calculated from model output, was similar to values calculated from field data. Five noncontiguous years were chosen for hindcasts to span a wide range of meteorological conditions (winds, runoff) and recruitment success. Interannual comparisons suggest that two years of above average recruitment (1978 and 1988), and one year of below average recruitment (1991), experienced flow fields which carried many individuals into the Alaskan Stream. At the same time, the vigorous flow fields generated in each of these years carried some individuals onto the shelf area to the south-west of the spawning site. A year with low runoff and weak winds (1989) exhibited weak circulation, with extended retention of larvae near the spawning site. A year with high runoff (1987) was notable for the strength and frequency of mesoscale eddy activity. Eddies appear capable of both enhancing patchiness of early larvae (through retention) and dissipating patchiness of juveniles (through mesoscale mixing). Larvae retained in an eddy feature exhibit a narrower range of sizes than the population outside that feature.  相似文献

Equine temporohyoid osteoarthropathy is characterized by progressive osseous proliferation of the temporohyoid articulation and surrounding structures. The diagnosis has generally been made using radiography and endoscopy of the guttural pouch. Recently, computed tomography (CT) has been used in the diagnosis of temporohyoid osteoarthropathy. This study was performed to determine the CT imaging characteristics of temporohyoid osteoarthropathy and to compare these to radiographic and endoscopic findings. CT scans from 16 horses with a final diagnosis of temporohyoid osteoarthropathy were reviewed. Five horses that had undergone CT scan for reasons other than temporohyoid osteoarthropathy were included as controls. Qualitative and quantitative data were used to describe the magnitude of the CT findings. Osseous proliferation of the stylohyoid bone and temporohyoid articulation was found to be a consistent feature of temporohyoid osteoarthropathy. Thickening of the ceratohyoid bone and proliferation of its articulation with the stylohyoid bone was frequently identified and this finding may have surgical implications. Horses with neurologic deficits had increased stylohyoid width that was significantly different than the subclinically affected side. CT evaluation also allowed the identification of subclinical bilateral disease in horses thought to be unilaterally affected based on clinical examination.  相似文献

Seventy-two horses with recent onset of navicular syndrome and normal radiographs were assessed. Horses underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of both front feet. All abnormalities were characterized and the most severe abnormality identified, if possible. Abnormal signal intensity in the navicular bone was the most severe abnormality in 24 (33%) horses. Pathologic change in the deep digital flexor tendon was the most severe abnormality in 13 (18%) horses. Pathologic change in the collateral sesamoidean ligament was the most severe abnormality in 11 (15%) horses. Pathologic change in the distal sesamoidean impar ligament was the most severe abnormality in seven (10%) horses. Multiple abnormalities were observed in 13 (18%) horses in which an abnormality that was more severe than the others could not be determined. Abnormalities were not observed in the navicular bone or its supporting soft tissues in four (5%) horses. Fifty-six horses had abnormalities that were most severe in one limb; in 52 (93%) horses, the most severe abnormalities were in the foot of the most lame limb. In 7% (4/56) of horses, the most severe findings were in the opposite limb, and in 16 horses, the findings on both limbs were similar. MR imaging is a useful technique for evaluating horses with navicular syndrome and can differentiate between multiple abnormalities. This provides a more specific diagnosis which affects further treatment of the horse. Pathologic changes in different locations in the foot can cause similar clinical signs that, before MR imaging, were categorized as one syndrome.  相似文献

We compared the relative sensitivity of computed tomography (CT) and myelography for identification of disk herniation in dogs. Criteria for patient selection included presurgical CT, myelography, or both and surgical or necropsy confirmation of disk herniation between the T3 and L6 vertebral articulations. Imaging findings were described as positive or inconclusive. Adverse events such as hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, death, and lower urinary tract infection were compared between imaging groups. One hundred and eighty-two dogs met the inclusion criteria, with 116 dogs having myelography performed as the initial diagnostic imaging modality and 66 dogs having CT performed as the initial modality. The relative sensitivity for locating the site of disk herniation was 83.6% when myelography was the first test performed and 81.8% when CT was the first test performed. CT was more sensitive than myelography at detecting lesions in chronically affected dogs ( P =0.025). Myelography was more sensitive than CT at detecting lesions in smaller dogs (<5 kg; P =0.004). Dogs that received both imaging modalities were significantly more likely to die or be euthanized compared with myelography alone ( P <0.001). Both myelography and CT are reasonable diagnostic imaging modalities for locating the site of disk herniation. CT should be considered especially in heavier, more chronically affected dogs. The major limitations of this study include lack of randomization to imaging modality and the use of surgical exploration or necropsy as the gold standard.  相似文献

We examine the oft-quoted relationship between the migration of Fraser River sockeye salmon around the northern end of Vancouver Island and sea surface temperatures. We examine the methods used to estimate the northern diversion and conclude that the estimates have a sufficiently low expected error to form a useful representation of sockeye salmon behaviour. The well-known relationship with Kains Island sea surface temperature is explored and problems are pointed out. In particular, we explore why Kains Island temperatures are good predictors of salmon behaviour in May when the sockeye can be over 1000 km away, but the coastal temperatures are poor predictors in July to September when the salmon are actually close by. We show that a more robust predictor can be developed using open ocean temperature fields and we show why Kains Island fails as a predictor during the summer months. Finally, we show by cross-validation that the northern diversion is predictable with an r.m.s. error of about 0.1.  相似文献

Summary. Adsorption and degradation rates of triasulfuron in 8 different soils were negatively correlated with soil pH and were generally lower in subsoils than in soils from the plough layer. The half-life at 20°C varied from 33 days in a top soil at pH 5·8 to 120 days in a subsoil at pH 7·4. Adsorption distribution coefficients in these two soils were 0·55 and 0·19, respectively. Movement and persistence of residues of chlorsulfuron, triasulfuron and metsulfuron-methyl were compared in a field experiment prepared in spring 1987. Triasulfuron was less mobile in the soil than the other two compounds. Residues of all three herbicides were largely confined to the upper 40–50 cm soil 148 days after application. With an initial dose of 32 g ha−1, residues in the surface soil layers were sufficient to affect growth of lettuce and sugar-beet sown approximately one year after application. Laboratory adsorption and degradation data were used with appropriate weather data in a computer model of herbicide transport in soil. The model gave good predictions of total soil residues during the first five months following application, and also predicted successfully the maximum depth of penetration of the herbicides into the soil during this period. However, more herbicide was retained close to the soil surface than was predicted by the model. The model predicted extensive movement of the herbicides in the soil during winter but did not predict that residues sufficient to affect crop growth could be present in the upper 15–20 cm soil after one year.  相似文献

Smooth muscle origin neoplasia of the urinary bladder wall is rare in dogs. This report describes the ultrasonographic features of two bladder wall leiomyomas and one bladder wall leiomyosarcoma. All three dogs had a single, smoothly marginated, round, hypo to mixed echogenicity intraluminal mass in the urinary bladder. Based on color Doppler examination of the masses, there was no visible blood flow.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging abnormalities in horses with lameness localized to the proximal metacarpal or metatarsal region have not been described. To accomplish that, the medical records of 45 horses evaluated with MR imaging that had lameness localized to either the proximal metacarpal or metatarsal region were reviewed. Abnormalities observed in the proximal suspensory ligament or the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon included abnormal high signal, enlargement, or alteration in shape. Twenty-three horses had proximal suspensory ligament desmitis (13 hindlimb, 10 forelimb). Sixteen horses had desmitis of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon. One horse had desmitis of the proximal suspensory ligament and the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon on the same limb and one horse had desmitis of the proximal suspensory ligament on one forelimb and desmitis of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon on the other forelimb. Four horses did not have abnormalities in the proximal suspensory ligament or accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon. Eighty percent of horses with forelimb proximal suspensory ligament desmitis and 69% of horses with hindlimb proximal suspensory ligament desmitis returned to their intended use. Sixty-three percent of horses with desmitis of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon were able to return to their intended use. MR imaging is a valuable diagnostic modality that allows diagnosis of injury in horses with lameness localized to the proximal metacarpal and metatarsal regions. The ability to accurately diagnose the source of lameness is important in selecting treatment that will maximize the chance to return to performance.  相似文献
