Tree girdling has been experimentally used to stop the allocation of carbohydrates from the canopy to tree roots and their associated ectomycorrhizal (EM) mycelia. We used three already established girdling experiments in northern Sweden, one in a Pinus sylvestris stand and two in Picea abies stands, to determine the effect of tree girdling on soil-living oribatid mites. These mites often feed on fungal hyphae, but it is not known to what extent they feed on EM or saprotrophic fungi. We hypothesised that a presumed decline in EM fungi after girdling would strongly reduce EM-feeding specialists and, correspondingly, reduce total abundance and species richness of oribatids in girdled plots. Tree girdling resulted in a significant decline in total abundance of oribatid mites in the two spruce stands, which was assumed to be linked to the decline in EM fungi, but not in the pine stand. Species richness decreased in girdled plots in one of the spruce forests. The decline in total abundance in girdled spruce stands was primarily dependent on a significant and consistent population decrease in Oppiella nova, which was the most abundant oribatid mite in the ungirdled spruce plots. Its abundance after girdling was only 8–18% of that in ungirdled spruce plots. In the pine stand, O. nova had much lower abundance than in the spruce stands, and despite a tendency to decline in number after girdling also in the pine stand, it had a minor effect on total abundance. These results suggest that O. nova may be dependent on EM fungi in spruce forest soils, whereas the dependence on EM fungi in pine forest soils is less evident.  相似文献

Research was conducted to determine the environmental effects of Cr residues from a chromite-ore processing plant (Cromatos de México) on the human population living in the surrounding area. The results of this study provided the first quantitative evidence of the transfer of Cr to the atmosphere, soil and subsequently to ground water. The atmospheric concentration of Cr ranged from 0.25 to 0.39 μg m?3, seven times higher than the level found in the control area. Most of the well water samples (90%) had a higher Cr concentration than the threshold limit value for drinking water of 0.05 mg L?1. The high Cr concentration in the environment may be responsible for the high concentration of this metal in urine (18.6 ng mL?1) and hair (4.3 μg g?1) found in the residents of this polluted area. These results were compared with those of people living in a Cr free zone through statistical analysis (Wilcoxon's signed-ranks test). A significant difference of p<0.01 was found between these two populations. In relation to the average concentrations in hair (1.4 μg g?1) and urine (2.0 to 6.0 ng mL?1) considered as normal for a non exposed population in the USA, 70 to 80% of the residents in the Mexican urban-industrial area registered higher values. The high Cr concentration in urine found in workers from the chromite-ore processing plant show the lack of an efficient pollution control system. Therefore the Cr levels found in urine and hair can be used as indicators of environmental exposure.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of feed restriction with or without monensin supplementation, followed by a re‐feeding period on cellular apoptosis and proliferation in at term placenta of Anglo‐Nubian goats. To evaluate the induction of apoptosis through the intrinsic pathway, proteins Bax and Bcl‐2 were determinated. The apoptosis was related with the cell proliferation indices through Ki67 determination. The treatments were applied for 250 days and were (a) ad libitum feeding (control; n = 5); (b) restricted feeding at 70% of control (restricted; n = 7); and (c) restricted with monensin supplementation (monensin; n = 7). After treatments, all the animals were fed to support their requirements. After parturition, 27 placentas were gathered. The placental cellular structure was studied by high‐resolution light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy; the cellular proliferation was determined by Ki67 index, and Bax and Bcl‐2 proteins were localized by immunohistochemical analysis. Differences in cell proliferation through the Ki67 index were found in monensin group placentas. Monensin supplementation stimulated the placental cell proliferation reversing the effect of feed restriction during the peripuberal period. A significant increase of Bcl‐2 in placentas of restricted group was found, and it would provide a protective effect on the placental structure. A lack of the Bcl‐2 protective effect was observed in control and monensin group placentas, probably meaning that the observed apoptosis would be induced through the intrinsic signalling pathway. A balance between apoptosis and cell proliferation is necessary to maintain tissue homoeostasis during caprine placental development.  相似文献

Many of the plant acquisition strategies for immobile nutrients, such as phosphorus (P), are related to the maximization of soil exploration at minimum metabolic cost. Previous studies have suggested that soybean (Glycine max L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), and maize (Zea mays L.) differ in their P uptake efficiency. In this investigation we employed these three species to evaluate: (1) the effect of suboptimal P conditions on root morphological traits related to root porosity and fineness and (2) how these traits are related to P‐uptake efficiency. Opaque 25‐L plastic containers were used to grow plants hydroponically. The three species were compared under two P availability levels (low P and high P). Most of the observed responses were in the direction to favor P uptake under low‐P conditions. Compared to P‐sufficient plants, P‐stressed plants of the three species showed higher root‐to‐shoot ratio, specific root length, root porosity and root aerenchyma, and a lower root density. For example, P‐stress increased root porosity by a factor of 2.0, 1.4, and 1.4 in soybean, sunflower, and maize, respectively. Soybean and sunflower were the species with the highest P‐uptake efficiency, expressed as P uptake either per unit root biomass or length. The results demonstrate the central role of aerenchyma development in modifying root length per unit root biomass and, thus, reducing the root's foraging costs. Consequently, aerenchyma is suggested to be a possible mechanism for better P‐uptake efficiency.  相似文献

The soils of montane cloud forests (MCF) are still insufficiently studied. A number of researchers report Podzols to be the main soil group for MCF ecosystems; however, a great deal of contradictory data exists. We studied an altitudinal sequence of soils formed on ferrous chlorite shale under natural MCF vegetation in Sierra Juárez, Southern Mexico, from 1500 to 2500 m asl. The soils of the upper part of the toposequence were Folic Stagnic Podzols, with inclusions of Folic Stagnosols in local depressions, while the soils of the lower part of the toposequence were Folic Cambisols (Humic, Hyperdystric). All the soils in the toposequence were extremely acid, and had thick organic surface horizon. Mineral horizons of all soils were poor both in exchangeable and total reserves of bases; the bases were concentrated mainly in organic topsoil. With decreasing altitude both the thickness of albic horizons, the depth of the maximum acid oxalate-extractable Fe and Al concentrations, and the difference in clay content between the eluvial and illuvial horizons decreased. In the upper part of the toposequence the composition of soil clays was similar to that of parent material (chlorite and mica), with some mixed-layered 2:1 minerals. However, gibbsite and kaolinite were also present in the soils of the other site within the same upper MCF belt. The phenomenon was ascribed to parent material heterogenity. In the medium and lower parts of the toposequence gibbsite and kaolinite were the dominant minerals. We consider that the main pedogenic processes in the study area are raw humus accumulation, weathering in situ, podzolization, and iron reduction due to water stagnation in mineral topsoil. The intensity of weathering decreases, while the extent of water stagnation increases with altitude. To a great extent the genesis and altitudinal distribution of the soils in the MCF depends on parent material.  相似文献

Background

During epididymal transit, functional and structural modifications leading to full maturation enable male gametes to reach, recognize and fertilize the oocytes. In dogs, little is known on the modifications of spermatozoa during the passage in the epididymis. The aim of this study was to describe the motility, morphology and acrosomal patterns of canine spermatozoa retrieved from the epididymis caput, corpus and cauda.

Results

After the dilution required for the collection of epididymal content, sperm motility was significantly higher (P <0.0001) in the cauda compared to corpus and caput.Proportions of spermatozoa with normal morphology were significantly higher in corpus (P =0.02) and cauda (P <0.0001) compared to caput. Overall morphological abnormalities of the head and neck/midpiece were similar in the three different epididymal regions. A significantly increased prevalence of tail defects, mainly represented by single bent tails, was observed in the corpus compared to caput (P <0.0001) and cauda (P =0.006).Numbers of immature sperm with cytoplasmic droplets decreased from the proximal to the distal region of the epididymis. Particularly, proximal cytoplasmic droplets were more frequently found in spermatozoa collected from the caput epididymis than in the corpus (P <0.0001) and in the cauda (P <0.0001), whereas the occurrence of distal cytoplasmic droplets was higher in the corpus than in the caput (P =0.0003) and in the cauda (P <0.05).Significantly higher proportions of spermatozoa with intact acrosomes were retrieved from the cauda epididymis than from the caput (P =0.03) and the corpus (P =0.008). This difference was mainly due to a lower proportion of spermatozoa with abnormal acrosomes (mainly swollen acrosomes) rather than with absent acrosomes.

Conclusions

Canine spermatozoa undergo several modifications in the epididymis. The acquisition of progressive motility, migration of the cytoplasmic droplet and acrosomal reshaping lead to mature spermatozoa which are then stored in the cauda epididymis. From this site, spermatozoa can be retrieved and used in assisted reproductive techniques as a valuable tool for propagating genetic traits of high value individuals that dies accidentally or undergoes orchiectomy for medical purposes. Further investigations should be also focused on the potential use of spermatozoa recovered from other epididymal regions.  相似文献

We conducted an immunological assay of blood samples taken from 85 swine‐specialist veterinarians attending the Congress of the Mexican Association of Swine Specialist Veterinarians in Mexico in 2011. Serum samples were assayed for Porcine rubulavirus (PorPV), Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) and Leptospira spp. antibodies. Using a hemagglutination inhibition test, we registered 2.3% and 27% seropositivity for PorPV and EMCV, respectively. Using viral neutralization tests, we registered 5.8% and 47% seropositivity for PorPV and EMCV, respectively. For Leptospira spp., we registered a seropositivity of 38.8%. The variables (sex, age, years of exposure, number of visited farms, biosecurity level and region) showed no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the seropositivity for EMCV, PorPV and Leptospira spp. except for number of visited farms on HI seropositivity for EMCV (P < 0.05; odds ratio: 1.38). The data obtained provide information on the epidemiology of emerging diseases with zoonotic potential in occupational risk groups.  相似文献
