Oral eosinophilic granulomas were diagnosed in 16 tigers (Panthera tigris). All lesions were located on the hard or soft palate and typically consisted of flat or slightly raised circular ulcers. Histologic features of these lesions were essentially identical to those seen in oral eosinophilic granulomas of domestic cats and dogs. No clinical signs were noted in eight cases, though various degrees of inappetence, excessive salivation, and dysphagia were noted in the other eight tigers. Six cases were not treated. Treatment for the remaining 10 cases centered on corticosteroids and additional treatments included surgical removal, cryotherapy, antibiotics, and chlorpheniramine. Treatment with corticosteroids did appear to be effective in some cases, though lesions would worsen after cessation of therapy and no cases were cured. In addition, three cases developed complications possibly related to this corticosteroid therapy. The etiology of these lesions remains unknown, though an underlying allergic condition is likely.  相似文献

High midday temperatures can depress net photosynthesis. We investigated possible mechanisms underlying this phenomenon in leaves of Eperua grandiflora (Aubl.) Benth. saplings. This tropical tree establishes in small gaps in the rainforest canopy where direct sunlight can raise midday temperatures markedly. We simulated this microclimate in a growth chamber by varying air temperature between 28 and 38 degrees C at constant vapor pressure. A decrease in stomatal conductance in response to an increase in leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference (deltaW) caused by an increase in leaf temperature (Tleaf) was the principal reason for the decrease in net photosynthesis between 28 and 33 degrees C. Net photosynthesis decreased further between 33 and 38 degrees C. Direct effects on mesophyll functioning and indirect effects through deltaW were of similar magnitude in this temperature range. Mitochondrial respiration during photosynthesis was insensitive to Tleaf over the investigated temperature range; it thus did not contribute to midday depression of net photosynthesis. Internal conductance for CO2 diffusion in the leaf, estimated by combined gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements, decreased slightly with increasing Tleaf. However, the decrease in photosynthetic rate with increasing Tleaf was larger and thus the difference in CO2 partial pressure between the substomatal cavity and chloroplast was smaller, leading to the conclusion that this factor was not causally involved in midday depression. Carboxylation capacity inferred from the CO2 response of photosynthesis increased between 28 and 33 degrees C, but remained unchanged between 33 and 38 degrees C. Increased oxygenation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate relative to its carboxylation and the concomitant increase in photorespiration with increasing Tleaf were thus not compensated by an increase in carboxylation capacity over the higher temperature range. This was the principal reason for the negative effect of high midday temperatures on mesophyll functioning.  相似文献

The cause of a streak disease of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), originating from Nigeria, has been attributed to a geminivirus belonging to the African streak virus cluster. A full-length, infectious clone of the virus was obtained which was transmissible by the vectorCicadulina mbila (Naudé). Analysis of the complete nucleotide sequence of the coat protein gene of this virus shows it to be most closely related to sugarcane streak virus. The possible evolutionary implications of this finding are discussed.  相似文献

The structure of Escherichia coli succinate dehydrogenase (SQR), analogous to the mitochondrial respiratory complex II, has been determined, revealing the electron transport pathway from the electron donor, succinate, to the terminal electron acceptor, ubiquinone. It was found that the SQR redox centers are arranged in a manner that aids the prevention of reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation at the flavin adenine dinucleotide. This is likely to be the main reason SQR is expressed during aerobic respiration rather than the related enzyme fumarate reductase, which produces high levels of ROS. Furthermore, symptoms of genetic disorders associated with mitochondrial SQR mutations may be a result of ROS formation resulting from impaired electron transport in the enzyme.  相似文献

This article presents a novel method for making gluten-free bread using mesoscopically structured whey protein. The use of the meso-structured protein is based on the hypothesis that the gluten structure present in a developed wheat dough features a particle structure on a mesoscopic length scale (100 nm–100 μm). Whey protein particles were prepared by cold gelation of soluble whey protein aggregates during phase separation. The addition of a 2.4% whey protein particle suspension to wheat starch resulted in a dough that could be baked into a leavened bread with a specific volume up to 3.7 ml/g and a bubble size comparable with a normal bread. The relevance for structuring the whey protein into mesoscopic particles was confirmed by tests in which only a homogeneous whey protein gel or a whey protein solution was used. The protein particle system gave better results after proving and baking compared with these systems.  相似文献

Physiological postharvest deterioration (PPD) of cassava is the main constraint affecting its nutritional and economical values. PPD is induced by wounds when detaching storage roots from mother plant during harvesting. It is accelerated by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as oxygen ion (O2) and peroxide (O2)?2. The carotenoid content and its antioxidant property can help in extending shelf life of cassava storage roots. The primary mode of action of carotenoids as antioxidant is to quench singlet oxygen. Cassava breeding was reported to successfully introgress and improve carotenoid content into cassava. The two types of phytoene synthase (PSY) enzymes (PSY1 and PSY2) are key regulators of carotenoids accumulation in cassava. Carotenoids formation and accumulation in cassava storage roots are induced by a single nucleotide polymorphism in PSY2 which causes a non‐conservative amino acid exchange. This single nucleotide polymorphism in PSY gene is co‐segregated with β‐carotene in cassava storage roots, a phenomenon that could help to unravel the mechanism of introgression of carotenoids into cassava. This article investigates breeding feasibility for improving quality of cassava landraces in developing countries.  相似文献
