The composition of adipose tissue and its usefulness as a parameter for carcass composition in growing pigs

Growing pigs, varying in body weight between 25 and 110 kg, showed differences in fat content between adipose tissues from different body sites. In all adipose tissues fat content increased during growth; the increase in fat content was, as shown for backfat, affected by the level of daily energy intake. It is concluded that the dry matter (DM) or fat content in a single sample of adipose tissue cannot be used as an accurate parameter for fatness of carcasses at a normal slaughter weight.

Survey of internal parasites in Western Australian pig herds 2. Relationship to anthelmintic usage and parasite control practices

The housing, management and internal parasite control practices used in piggeries in Western Australia was surveyed by interviewing the owner/manager of 100 randomly selected piggeries. At the time of the interview 20 faecal samples were collected from pigs and examined for evidence of internal parasites. Most herds (80%) in which anthelmintics were used, had evidence of nematode infection. Some pig producers were using an anthelmintic that was ineffective against nematode species present while some herds had nematodes that should have been controlled by the anthelmintic being used. Prevalence of nematode infection was higher in pigs run in paddocks than in pigs housed intensively. Washing sows prior to farrowing was associated with a lower prevalence of nematode infection. The findings suggested that pig producers should ensure that the anthelmintic used is effective against the nematodes present in their pigs. It was concluded that administering anthelmintics as a single dose in the feed may not be the most effective method of deworming pigs.     

Atlantoaxial subluxation and absence of transverse ligament of the atlas in a dog

Absence of the transverse ligament of the atlas was diagnosed at necropsy in an 8-month-old Shih Tzu with radiographic signs of atlantoaxial subluxation. Symmetric ataxia, tetraparesis, and signs of pain in the vertebral canal suggested a lesion in the cervical portion of the spinal cord. Necropsy revealed absence of the transverse ligament of the atlas and malformation of dens and atlas. In addition, the alar ligaments were distinct and thick, and the atlanto-occipital and atlantoaxial joint capsules were markedly thicker than normal. Histologic examination revealed focal compressive myelopathy of the spinal cord at the level of the atlantoaxial joint.     

Canine lymphocyte cultures in vitro: Evaluation of peripheral blood lymphocyte response to mitogens

Lymphocytes from dog peripheral blood have been stimulated in vitro with 3 different mitogens (Con A, PHA and PWM). Culture medium was RPMI 1640 enriched with either autologous plasma, fetal calf serum or a newly described defined serum substitute. In such cultures the number of surviving and activated cells was measured by cytofluorometry and the proliferation was assessed by thymidine incorporation. In unstimulated cultures, up to 70% of all cells had disappeared (died) during the first 42 hours of incubation, whereas the number of viable cells was reduced to 50–60% in mitogen stimulated cultures. Of the surviving lymphocytes, between 25–40% of the cells appeared to have an elevated RNA-content (activated or G₁ cells). By comparison between thymidine incorporation and number of mitogen induced G₁ cells, a very high correlation was found (r=0.92). However, the slope of the regression line was much lower than expected. The low thymidine incorporation per activated cell was primarily related to the high cell death and a resulting dilution of tritiated thymidine. Indeed, preliminary results suggested that the same thymidine incorporation per G_1b cells could be obtained if peripheral blood lymphocytes were washed immediately before pulsing as could be obtained with lymphnode cells without washing.
