The present study evaluated the in vitro and in vivo inhibitory effects of Allium sativum extracts against the multidrug-resistant Vibrio harveyi, isolated from the black gill–diseased Fenneropenaeus indicus. Initially, the antibiogram of pathogenic V. harveyi was documented for its resistance towards selected commercial antibiotics. Further, antibacterial activity of A. sativum against Vibrio harveyi was performed by the agar well diffusion method. V. harveyi culture was seeded over the agar plates, and each of the garlic extracts (freshly squeezed garlic extract—FSGE, freeze-dried garlic extract—FDGE and methanolic garlic extract—MGE) was tested at three different concentrations. FSGE showed greater inhibitory activity against V. harveyi than FDGE and MGE. Three diets of standard meal preparation for shrimp containing 0% garlic as a control, 0.5% garlic and 1% garlic treatments were formulated to evaluate the effects of garlic on the experimental infection of shrimp with V. harveyi. The combined results of long- and short-term garlic (1%) extract treatment showed a 75% reduction in cumulative mortality. The present study discusses the advantages of using freshly squeezed garlic extract treatment in shrimp culture that could offer a promising alternative to the use of antibiotics in aquaculture to control disease.  相似文献

Abstract

Liposomes were prepared in the laboratory with lipids obtained from chicken egg yolk to encapsulate Spirulina powder. Artemia napulii were hatched and fed with lipid-encapsulated Spirulina or Spirulina powder. After 20 days of rearing, the experimental A. salina were harvested and measured for total body length and total content of protein and carbohydrates. Total body length was 45% higher, protein content was 49% higher, and carbohydrate was 35% higher in Artemia fed with liposomes as compared with those fed only Spirulina powder.  相似文献

The farmers of tropical Asia are applying neem leaves to rice fields as green manure traditionally. Neem cake blending of urea is recommended for inhibition of nitrification and increasing nitrogen use efficiency. Field experiment conducted at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India, during kharif and rabi seasons in 1984–85 with a short duration (105 days) rice cv. IR 50 showed that application of fresh neem leaf at 5 t/ha or dry neem leaf 1.25 t/ha with urea resulted in higher N recovery per cent and N response ratio and gave increased grain yield compared to the yield obtained due to the application of urea alone. Besides increasing the grain yield, neem leaf application could save about 50 per cent N application and give greater net returns to the farmer.  相似文献

Fluorescent pseudomonad strains Pf1, TDK1 and PY15 individually and in combination were evaluated against leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guen., in rice under in vitro, glasshouse and field conditions. Among the various treatments used, a combination of Pf1, TDK1 and PY15 strains effectively reduced the incidence of leaffolder pest in rice plants to an extent comparable with chlorpyrifos-methyl. In addition, morphogenesis of the insect pest in all stages, larval, pupal and adult, was greatly affected by a combination of Pseudomonas Pf1, TDK1 and PY15 strains. Further, the induction of defence-related molecules was demonstrated. An increased accumulation of defence molecules such as chitinase and proteinase inhibitors was observed with a combined Pf1, TDK1 and PY15 treatment compared with all other treatments. Western blot analysis of chitinase revealed the extra induction of 18, 28 and 35 kDa isoforms in rice plants treated with a mixture of Pf1, TDK1 and PY15 strains against leaffolder pest. The study revealed that a combination of fluorescent pseudomonad strains affects the development of leaffolder pest by inducing defence molecules in rice plants which in turn enhance resistance to leaffolder attack.  相似文献

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. subsp. vulgaris var. altissima) is a biennial, sugar-producing tuber crop grown in different parts of the world. Diseased sugar beets with symptoms of little leaf were observed during 2008 in Tamil Nadu, India. Phytoplasmas were detected in symptomatic leaves of three separate plants using PCR with primer pair fU5/rU3, which amplify an 880-bp fragment of the 16S rRNA region of phytoplasmas. The nucleotide sequence analysis of a 766-bp fragment had 100% identity among the sequence from the three plants (GQ184437) and 96% nucleotide sequence identity with 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences of eggplant phyllody phytoplasma.  相似文献

The selection of aerators and correct numbers can play an essential role in reducing the cost of production in aquaculture. The new generation aerators, namely spiral leaf, air‐jet, submersible and impeller, used in aquaculture, were assessed for its aeration efficiency and energy cost compared with the commonly used paddle wheel aerator. Of the aerators tested, the impeller had the highest aeration efficiency of 2.098 kg O2/kW hr, followed by paddle wheel with 1.436 kg O2/kW hr at 20‰ salinity. The spiral and air‐jet aerators had maximum aeration efficiency of 1.326 and 1.419 kg O2/kW hr, respectively, at 35‰ salinity. The submersible aerator was not efficient as its maximum efficiency was 0.380 kg O2/kW hr. The water flow by paddle wheel was 3 ft/sec and also provides better coverage than other types of aerators. The efficiency of aerators was high in optimum salinities (20‰ and 35‰) than the low or high saline condition. The average energy cost of shrimp pond aeration per hectare was lowest for impeller, followed by paddle wheel aerator. The study provided economic comparisons of vannamei culture using different aeration systems by keeping a uniform set of economic assumptions. Shrimp farms with impellors can give 14%–25% high returns across salinities, whereas spiral leaf can provide 5% high returns at 35‰ salinity. The combination of the type of aerators and the calculated use based on the salinity of the culture systems can result in energy‐saving and also a reduction in the production cost.  相似文献

This study focuses on the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of essential oils (EOs) from medicinal plants against Pseudomonas sp isolated from aquatic environments, and proves its controlling efficacy on Pseudomonas aeruginosa‐Dahp1 using Confocal Laser scanning Microscopy. Twenty‐seven Pseudomonas spp. (Ps 1Ps 27) were isolated using King's B medium and the selected P. aeruginosa‐Dahp1 was confirmed using 16S r‐DNA methods. Antimicrobial activity of 10 EOs was determined using agar well and disc diffusion methods. Ten EOs were extracted with six solvents and the crude extracts were tested against the Pseudomonas spp. through disc diffusion method. Among 10 EOs tested, maximum inhibitory activity was noted in EOs of Wringtia tinctoria against the P. aeruginosa‐Dahp1 in the disc diffusion method. The MIC values (concentrations were expressed in Weight/Volume) of the EOs range from 0.5 to 9.054 mg mL?1. The EO of W. tinctoria showed the maximum activity at the concentration (w/v) of 2.060 mg mL?1. The EO of W. tinctoria with chloroform extract showed the maximum inhibition against P. aeruginosa‐Dahp1. The CLSM proves the control and viability of 1 × 105 CFU mL?1 of P. aeruginosa‐Dahp1 at a lower concentration (2.720 mg) of EOs with chloroform extracts of W. tinctoria. This study pivots for designing of new drugs using EOs of W. tinctoria against Pseudomonades in the aquaculture sites.  相似文献

Thirteen essential oils recovered by steam distillation from Indian herbs were analyzed for their chemical compositions using GC and GCMS. The antifungal activity against plant and Food mold rot were examined in vitro using poison food technique. The essential oil from cymbopogan exhibited control over all the plant and food mold rot tested. The bioactive compound in the oil and its minimum inhibitory concentration were determined using TLC bioautography.  相似文献

A genetic linkage map of walnut containing 2,220 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 16 linkage groups (LGs) was constructed using an F1 mapping population from a cross between “Chandler” and “Idaho,” two contrasting heterozygous parents. Five quantitative yield traits, lateral fruitfulness, harvest date and three nut traits (shell thickness, nut weight and kernel fill) were then mapped on to linkage groups. A significant quantitative trait locus (QTL) in LG 11 with negative additive effects suggested heterozygote superiority in the expression of lateral bearing. A set of three QTLs explaining ~10% of the variation in harvest date was located in LG 1. Shell thickness, nut weight and kernel fill were under the control of two to three linked pleiotropic QTLs in LG 1 segregating from “Idaho.” The marginal positive additive effects of QTLs for harvest date, shell thickness and nut weight and small negative additive effects for kernel fill suggested that the QTLs had a marginal effect on the expression of these traits.  相似文献
