The farming of the red seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii and related species as raw material for the hydrocolloid carrageenan rapidly spread from the Philippines in the late 1960s to Indonesia, Tanzania, and other tropical countries around the world. Although numerous studies have documented positive socioeconomic impacts for seaweed farming, factors such as diseases and distance to export markets have led to an uneven development of the industry. Using standard budgeting techniques, this study adapted production and market data from a FAO-led global review of seaweed farming to develop comparative enterprise budgets for eight farming systems in six countries (Indonesia, the Philippines, Tanzania, India, Solomon Islands, and Mexico). Although the basic technology package is the same across countries, the study revealed large differences in the economic performance of systems due to wide variations in farm prices and the scale of operations. Although seaweed farming is a suitable activity for small-scale producers, a minimum of 2,000 m of cultures lines are still necessary to ensure adequate economic returns. Greater farming plots may be needed if farm prices are well below the average farm prices paid in Indonesia and the Philippines. Policy recommendations are made to improve the economic potential of underperforming systems.  相似文献

A total of 1400 juvenile Jian carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Jian) (7.72 ± 0.02 g) were fed seven purified diets containing 0.010 (basal diet), 0.028, 0.054, 0.151, 0.330, 1.540 and 2.680 mg biotin kg?1 for 63 days to investigate the effects of biotin on growth, body composition, intestinal enzyme activities and microbiota. Specific growth rate (SGR), feed intake, feed efficiency and protein retention value were the highest when dietary biotin level was 0.151 mg kg?1 diet. Crude protein, lipid and ash content of fish carcass improved with increasing dietary biotin levels up to 0.054, 0.151 and 0.028 mg kg?1 diet, respectively (P < 0.05). Intestinal folds height, trypsin, chymotrypsin, lipase, amylase, alkaline phosphatase, Na+, K+‐ATPase, γ‐glutamyl transpeptidase and creatinekinase activities increased with dietary biotin levels up to 0.151–0.330 mg kg?1 diet (P < 0.05). Intestinal Aeromonas and Escherichia coli significantly decreased with increasing dietary biotin up to 0.151 mg kg?1 diet, while Lactobacillus and Bacillus significantly increased with dietary biotin levels up to 0.054 and 0.151 mg kg?1 diet, respectively. In conclusion, biotin could improve digestive and absorptive ability of fish, and the dietary biotin requirement for SGR of juvenile Jian carp (7.72–32.67 g) was 0.15 mg kg?1 diet.  相似文献

The fish production parameters of five polyculture combinations, consisting of small and large silver barb, Puntius gonionotus (Bleeker), small and large Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), and small common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., fingerlings in three replicates, were investigated in a rice-fish culture experiment (duration 149 days) conducted in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The survival rate was not significantly (P > 0.05) affected by the polyculture combination, but when grouped according to species, the mean survival of silver barb and tilapia was 64.3% and 63.7%, respectively, significantly higher than the mean common carp survival rate (33.4%). The growth of silver barb and tilapia was proportionally related to the stocking density, probably because of intraspecific competition and a synergistic interaction between silver barb and tilapia. The growth of common carp was not significantly different among the polyculture combinations. The highest net production (474.1 kg ha?1) was obtained in the polyculture combination consisting of 80% small-sized silver barb fingerlings, but the fish was not marketable at that time. In concurrent rice-fish culture, it is recommended to raise large silver barb fingerlings. Small tilapia can be polycul-tured with silver barb, provided a stocking density lower than 1400 ha?1. Common carp is considered less suitable because of a limited tolerance for the water quality conditions in the ricefield and the large size required by the market.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of incorporating plant protein blend in juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) diet on free amino acid (AA) concentration and the expression of genes related to peptide and AA transporters, key enzymes of AA metabolism and AA response (AAR) pathway. Fish were fed diets with fish meal (FM), or 400 g/kg FM replacement by plant protein blend for 9 weeks. Compared with the FM diet, PP40 diet did not affect plasma essential amino acid (EAA) concentration or AA metabolic enzymes gene in intestine, while it significantly upregulated all the detected peptide and neutral AA transporters gene. Results in muscle indicated that PP40 diet led to a great reduction of EAA concentrations and mRNA abundance of two kinds of AA transporters (SNAT2 and b0,+AT), while it greatly increased the gene expression of L‐type and T‐type AA transporters (LAT2 and TAT1) and the enzymes of AA catabolism (BCKDH‐E2) and anabolism (asparagine synthetase). In addition, the expression of genes related to AAR pathway were all greatly stimulated by PP40 diet in muscle. Our results provide a molecular explanation for the change of tissues AA concentrations caused by plant protein in turbot, which maybe applicable for general carnivorous fish.  相似文献

Orychophragmus violaceus, a member of the Cruciferae family, has been found to have a high oil quality with high contents of palmitic (14.3 %) and oleic (20.3 %) acids, and lower contents of linolenic (4.8 %) and erucic (0.9 %) acids. Plants of O. violaceus exhibit a high number of branches, pods per plant, and seeds per pod, which contributes to the high yield potential of this plant. Individual selection was made in the original population of O. violaceus, and a few early, disease-tolerant and high-yielding lines were obtained. Intergeneric hybridization was performed between B. napus and O. violaceus and several hybrid plants (F1) were obtained. After treatment with colchicine, amphidiploid plants developed. O. violaceus shows great potential for becoming an edible oil crop or being used as genetic material in a rapeseed breeding programme.  相似文献

Forests are key components of the global carbon cycle, with deforestation being an important driver of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide. Temperate old-growth forests have some of the highest above ground stores of carbon of any forest types on Earth. Unlike tropical forests, the ecology of many temperate forests is dominated by episodic disturbance, such as high intensity fire. An exemplar of a particularly carbon dense temperate forest system adapted to infrequent catastrophic fires is the Eucalyptus regnans forests of south eastern Australia. Knowledge of the growth and longevity of old-growth trees is crucial to understanding the carbon balance and fire regimes of these forest systems. In an old-growth E. regnans stand in the Styx Valley in southern Tasmania we used dendrochronological techniques and radiocarbon dating to determine the age and stem growth of E. regnans and Phyllocladus aspleniifolius, an understorey rainforest conifer. Our analysis revealed that an even-aged cohort of E. regnans and P. aspleniifolius established in 1490–1510AD, apparently after a stand-replacing fire. The stem growth rates of E. regnans in the first 100 years were very rapid compared to the co-occurring P. aspleniifolius. That the longevity of E. regnans is >500 years challenges the suggested 350–450 year timeframe proposed for the widely held model of succession from eucalypt to rainforest. These forests not only have the potential to store vast amounts of carbon, but can also maintain these high carbon densities for a long period of time. Estimates of the capacity of these forests to sequester and store carbon should explicitly consider past harvesting and fire regimes and the potential increases in the risk of fire associated with climate change.  相似文献

The experiment was conducted to investigate the in vitro effects of inulin and soya bean oligosaccharide (SBO) on the metabolism of L‐tryptophan (L‐try) to skatole production, and the intestinal microbiota in broilers. Treatments were as follows: caecal microbiota control (Cc), Cc + inulin, Cc + SBO, rectal microbiota control (Rc), Rc + inulin and Rc + SBO. Microbial suspensions were anaerobically incubated at 38°C for 24 hr. The results showed that concentrations of skatole and acetic acid were significantly lower in caecal microbiota fermentation broth (MFB) than those in rectal MFB (p < .05). Addition of inulin or SBO significantly decreased the concentrations of indole and skatole and rate of L‐try degradation (p < .05). Inulin groups had lower indole than SBO groups (p < .05). PCR‐DGGE analysis revealed that addition of inulin or SBO decreased the microbiota richness (p < .05), but no significant differences in Shannon index (p > .05). Four distinct bands were detected in inulin and SBO groups, which were related to two of Bacteroides, one of Firmicutes and Bifidobacteria. Six bands were detected only in control groups, which represented uncultured Rikenellaceae, Roseburia, Escherichia/Shigella dysenteriae, Bacteroides uniformis (T), Parabacteroides distasonis and Enterobacter aerogenes. Populations of Lactobacilli, Bifidobacteria and total bacteria in inulin groups were higher than those in control groups (p < .05). For SBO groups, only population of total bacteria increased (p < .05). However, there were no significant differences in Escherichia coli population among treatments (p > .05). These results suggest that reduced concentrations of skatole and indole in the presence of inulin and SBO may be caused by decrease in L‐try degradation rate, which were caused by change in microbial ecosystem and pH value. Uncultured B. uniformis (T) and E. aerogenes may be responsible for degradation of L‐try to skatole.  相似文献

Detailed information on the profile distributions of agronomically important soil properties in the planting season can be used as criteria to select the best soil tillage practices. Soil cores (0–60 cm) were collected in May, 2012 (before soybean planting), from soil transects on a 30‐yr tillage experiment, including no‐tillage (NT), ridge tillage (RT) and mouldboard plough (MP) on a Brookston clay loam soil (mesic Typic Argiaquoll). Soil cores were taken every 19 cm across three corn rows and these were used to investigate the lateral and vertical profile characteristics of soil organic carbon (SOC), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), soil volumetric water content (SWC), bulk density (BD), and penetration resistance (PR). Compared to NT and MP, the RT system resulted in greater spatial heterogeneity of soil properties across the transect. Average SOC concentrations in the top 10 cm layer were significantly greater in RT than in NT and MP (= 0.05). NT soil contained between 0.8 and 2.5% (vol/vol) more water in the top 0–30 cm than RT and MP, respectively. MP soil had lower PR and BD in the plough layer compared to NT and RT soils, with both soil properties increasing sharply with depth in MP. The RT had lower PR relative to NT in the upper 35 cm of soil on the crop rows. Overall, RT was a superior conservation tillage option than NT in this clay loam soil; however, MP had the most favourable soil conditions in upper soil layers for early crop development across all treatments.  相似文献
